Why does my lake or pond get out of balance? With so many variables affecting your pond, choosing the correct treatment options can be confusing. This FarmPond Treatment maintenance guide brings you easy-to-read information on common issues, helps you understand the factors that contribute to them and explains how FarmPond Treatment tackles each problem. Ponds and lakes are very sensitive to outside influences, especially the quality of water flowing into them and the nutrients and organic material being washed or blown into them. The ideal pond has clear cool water, low nutrient levels and lots of large leaved aquatic plants for shade. However, over time the gradual build-up of organic matter and nutrients washed into the pond can lead to too much plant or algae growth. This bloom dies and rots, depleting oxygen in the water and killing fish. This process is called eutrophication and is bad for the health of the pond. Eutrophic ponds have cloudy and dark colored water with low oxygen levels, thick stagnant sediments and lots of algae. When excess muck is present, it robs the pond of oxygen. This hurts fish, and creates odor problems. Worse yet, disease-causing bacteria live in the anaerobic muck at the pond bottom. All ponds, particularly older ponds, have sludge buildup. Sludge is the muck at the bottom of the pond. Sludge and Odor Problems Pond Surface Clarity Odor caused by sludge buildup Sludge buildup at the bottom of the pond The powerful sludge-digesting bacteria in FarmPond Treatment digests bottom muck, which eliminates bad odors, and improves the overall health of your pond for fish and wildlife.

The FarmPond Treatment Kit: The Only Two-Part, Full Spectrum Pond Treatment System The FarmPond Treatment kit is a combination of ultra-concentrated liquid PondPerfect plus powdered, slow release, EcoSocks designed to work together to provide the comprehensive, economical results your specific pond requires. Liquid PondPerfect PondPerfect liquid is specially formulated for use in freshwater farm ponds. PondPerfect is super concentrated, with an ideal mix of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. PondPerfect is designed to work with EcoSocks for optimal water clarity improvement Powdered EcoSocks EcoSocks are powdered sludge reducing bacteria and food grade nutrients. When placed into the pond, EcoSocks continuously release sludge digesting bacteria for a full month. Only FarmPond Treatment offers two-part, full spectrum treatment.

How to Determine the Correct FarmPond Treatment Dose For Your Specific Pond Follow these guidelines to make sure you get the best results and value from FarmPond Treatment. These three things are most important: 1. Know the surface area of your pond (see chart for dose) 2. Double the dose for severe problems 3. Apply most of each dose where problems are most severe Concentrate the Dose where Problems are the Worst For optimal results, concentrate each dose where problems are most severe. For liquid dosing, dilute the liquid PondPerfect with 5 to 10 gallons of pond water, and pour along the periphery of the pond in areas of greatest need. Wind and natural mixing will spread the product around where it is needed. Throw the EcoSocks into areas where odors are the worst, or where known sludge buildup exists. By concentrating the dose this way, each month, the best possible results are achieved with minimum effort. Double the Dose for Severe or Chronic Problems For severe or chronic clarity, odor, or sludge problems, use double the standard dose for one or two applications. Once the pond is improved, revert to the standard dose, and maintain standard dose thereafter. Occasionally, during severe heat or drought conditions, a month of double dosing will be effective and is highly recommended.

Tips and Tricks for Dosing FarmPond Treatment As shown on the previous page, for most ponds, find the acres of the pond needing treatment, then use the Standard Dose Chart to determine how much FarmPond Treatment to apply monthly. DOSE HIGHER IN THESE SITUATIONS: For extra deep ponds (ponds that are more than 12 ft average depth), increase the Standard Dosage by 25%. Double the dose for severe existing problems, then switch to the standard dose once the pond is improving. What is Right Time of the Year to Use FarmPond Treatment? In general, wait until the pond water is about 50 degrees F before dosing FarmPond Treatment. Then dose throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Once the water temperature drops below 50 F stop dosing, and wait until spring to restart treatment. My Pond is Already in Bad Shape. What Should I Do? It is better to dose early in the season and prevent severe problems. But if you already have a problem, FarmPond Treatment is the non-toxic solution! As noted, to solve a severe problem, use a double dose until the pond improves, then revert to the standard dose. How Often Should I Apply? For best results, add once a month according to the dose chart. Extra dosing, or double dosing cannot hurt, and will speed results when severe problems exist. How Do I Dose the Liquid PondPerfect? Always shake well before dosing. To get good distribution, mix the liquid PondPerfect with 5 to 10 parts pond water or tap water. Then apply the liquid around the periphery (edges) of the pond. Typically, choose 4 or more dosing zones per acre. Apply most of the liquid where problems are the worst. Normal wind action and natural mixing will distribute the liquid PondPerfect where it needs to go. How Do I Dose the Powdered EcoSocks? EcoSocks are completely biodegradable. Simply remove the outer plastic bag and label. Do not open the burlap bag. Then toss the EcoSock about 10 to 20 feet into the pond, always, placing the EcoSocks where the problems are worst.

Timetable of Results Special Note on Pre-Existing Problems: When trying to eliminate an existing water clarity or odor problem, the FarmPond Treatment dose rate should be doubled until improvement is noticable, then the dose is returned to the standard rate. The double dose rate for a problem pond is usually needed for about 2 to 4 months, but can be switched to the standard dose in as little as one application. During unusually hot, dry, or sunny periods, switching to a double dose rate is effective for coping with short-term water clarity problems that occur during these extreme situations. FarmPond Treatment is non-toxic, and does not poison anything like chemicals do (e.g. copper sulphate). Therefore do NOT expect the instant results that you may get with harsh chemicals. It will take FarmPond Treatment a month, and possibly 2 to 4 months in severe situations, to really show an improvement. While FarmPond Treatment results are more gradual than typical chemical treatments, FarmPond Treatment is actually beneficial for water quality, fish, wildlife, desirable aquatic plants, and your turf (if irrigating). Odor Control is the Quickest Result Odor problems will dissipate within one or two weeks of the first application. Rotten egg and septic odors will be eliminated, and only the healthy, earthy pond scent will remain. Water Clarity Improvement Timelins Zones of water clearing will be evident in the areas where you dosed most heavily within a week or two. After that, clarity will continue to improve, and spread out. Often, surface problems will change color (begin to turn brown) and fall to the bottom of the pond. This is a very positive result. After one or two months of treament, water clarity improvements should be obvious. However, if progress remains slower than desired, switch to the double dose until you are satisfied, then switch back to the standard dose rate. In nearly all situations, water clarity should be excellent within 2 to 4 applications. Bottom Muck and Sludge Bottom muck and sludge result from dead leaves, clippings, wildlife droppings and remains of past blooms. Remember, bottom muck is the cause of bad odors, and increases the potential for oxygen sag and presence of bad bacteria. Proper dosing of FarmPond Treatment will reduce the bottom muck by 25% or more during a full pond season. Reduction of the muck may be an unseen benefit, but it is extremely important to the health and balance of your pond. Often, the reduction in bottom muck saves the owner thousands of dollars in pond dredging costs at some point in time, and this alone is well worth the cost of the product.

Compatibility with Fish and Aquatic Plants FarmPond Treatment is completely compatible with fish and desirable aquatic plants. FarmPond Treatment is extensively used in commercial fish farms and large aquariums. FarmPond Treatment is actually beneficial to fish in your pond as it removes toxic ammonia and nitrite that cause fish stress and mortality. Some users ask if FarmPond Treatment has a negative effect on desirable aquatic plants such as hyacinths, water lilies and hornwort. The simple answer is that FarmPond Treatment is completely compatible with and even beneficial for all desirable aquatic plants. Storage & Shelf Life of FarmPond Treatment Treatment Store at room temperature for best results. Avoid storage at prolonged high temperatures above 110 F (a few days does not damage the product, but return to room temperature for storage as soon as possible). Shelf life is guaranteed 1 year beyond purchase. Avoid freezing solid. Freezing solid distorts the bottle shape, but once thawed, the liquid product is still good and active, and the powdered EcoSock in not affected.

Real Results from Use of FarmPond Treatment The following photos show several months of progress during FarmPond Treatment use in an 8-acre lake. Note drastic improvement from May through July, when problems would always get worse, not better!
