1 Volume 2, Issue 5,31 December 2016 From the Desk of President Dear Member, It is pleasure to share with you the activities of the Association and other developments taking place in the global sugar industry through the 5th Edition of STAI e-newsletter. The crushing for the sugar season has commenced on full stream. The domestic and international sugar prices have remained firm throughout the year 2016 due to tightening of the global supply and balanced sugar demand. The same is anticipated in the year 2017 as well. As per the Govt. of India estimates, the production for the sugar season is expected to decline by 10.27% to million tonnes due to drought in major sugarcane growing states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. However, with a carry- over stock of 7.7 million tonnes and estimated consumption of 25.5 million tonnes, the total availability of sugar would be sufficient to meet the domestic consumption. After two years of back to back drought in Maharashtra and Karnataka, this year the region has received adequate rainfall and the reservoirs have filled up. With expectation of increase in sugarcane area in these states, we look forward to good sugar production in the season STAI has completed the year 2016 on a satisfactory note. In the preceding year, the Association organized varied activities at national and international levels and initiated new initiatives like : Introducing Payment Gateway for online payment of membership subscription Revamping its publication Year Book and Technical Data Directory of Indian Sugar Factories and publishing working results of 424 sugar factories for the 2 consecutive years and Organized 4 all India seminars, out of which seminars at locations of Noida, Mudhol and Amritsar were organized for the first time. The 74 th Annual Convention of the Association held at Delhi, was attended by over 900 participants which included international delegates from 8 countries. Mr Sanjay Awasthi, President, STAI For the year 2017, your Council has drawn up an exciting activity plan for the advantage of all the stake holders. We look forward to your active participation and support as ever. Wishing you a very happy and prosperous New Year 2017 and profitable Sugar Crushing Season SANJAY AWASTHI Inside this issue: Highlights XXIX ISSCT Congress 2-5 Amritsar Seminar 6 Member s Corner 7 Upcoming National & International Events 7 Plenary Session at ISSCT XXIX Congress held from 5-8 Dec2016

6 Page 6 All India Seminar on Energy Efficiency in Sugar Mills 14th October 2016, Hotel Hyatt, Amritsar Sugar industry is known to have self sufficiency in fuel and power, hence traditionally primary importance has been given to the operational conveniences. Due to the rise in production cost and cyclical nature of the industry, the focus has shifted to energy conservation to earn extra income through co-generation and export of surplus power to the national grid or through sale of saved bagasse. While energy efficiency levels vary significantly across sugar industry, estimated energy saving potential is about 20% in this sector. The forward looking sugar factories have successfully turned around their systems to benefit from the cutting edge technologies; however there is ample scope of further improvement in the field of energy Conservation. With the above backdrop and to draw conclusive opinions of the experts and stakeholders on the subject, The Sugar Technologists Asociation of India in association with The Haryana State Federation of Co operative Sugar Mills Ltd organized an All India one day seminar on Energy Efficiency in Sugar Mills on 14th October 2016 at Hotel Hyatt, Amritsar Punjab. This was the first time that STAI organized any of its in Punjab.
