Progress of Chornobyl NPP Decommissioning Andrii Bilyk SSE Chornobyl NPP
SSE Chornobyl NPP Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant was commissioned in 1977, finally shut down in Total area of the SSE Chornobyl NPP makes 3,003.2 ha including: Cooling Pond area 2,424 ha Area of land plots ha Industrial site 80.1 ha Total weight of metal (as equipment) - > 300,000 tons 2
Shutdown of ChNPP Units Total amount of generated electric power makes billion kwh. Before the accident billion kwh After the accident billion kwh.. Shelter Object Unit 3 Unit 2 Unit
Decommissioning Strategy Deferred Dismantling Strategy (SAFSTOR): preservation and long-term (up to 50 years) safe enclosure, under supervision, of the most contaminated equipment (primary circuit and reactor); step-by-step dismantling of equipment from the most clean to contaminated ; 4 Отдел стратегического планирования ЧАЭС
Design of ChNPP Units Final Shutdown and Preservation The Project objective is preservation of reactors and contaminated equipment, their pretreatment for long-term safe enclosure under supervision On , the SNRIU issued an individual license for implementation of FS&P stage
Spent nuclear fuel (SNF) management Stages of SNF removal from the Units: spent nuclear fuel was removed and transferred from Unit 3 to ISF-1; standard fuel from Units 1, 2 was moved to ISF-1 and the technology for safe management of damaged SNF was elaborated; damaged SNF was removed from Units 1, SNF was removed from the rector cores SNF was completely removed from Unit standard SNF was completely removed from Unit standard SNF was completely removed from Unit 1. April - June damaged SNF was removed from Units 1 and 2. ChNPP Units 1-3 has been recognized as RAW management facilities.
Construction of ChNPP decommissioning infrastructure Main infrastructure facilities: Industrial Heating Plant (IHP) Industrial Complex for Solid RAW Management (ICSRM) ; Liquid Radwaste Treatment Plant (LRTP) Complex for Production of Steel Drums and Reinforced Concrete Containers for RAW storage/disposal Interim Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel (ISF-2) 7
Construction of ChNPP decommissioning infrastructure Industrial Complex for Solid Radioactive Waste Management activities on preparation for commissioning are in progress (the third stage). In 2010, Lot-0 was commissioned, namely: temporary storage facility for HLW and LIL-LLW. Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant in December 2014 an individual permission of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine for LRTP operation was obtained. Complex for Production of Steel Drums and Reinforced Concrete Containers for RAW Storage/Disposal facility was commissioned in 2012.
Interim Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel (ISF-2) construction and installation work will be finished in June 2017; cold tests June-July 2017; hot tests - December-March 2017.
Other ITA projects Donor the European Commission Establishment of industrial facility for removal of transuranium elements and organics from ChNPP water and LRW (IPF) Phase I Objective purification of LRW up to the levels which subsequently will enable to process the waste at the LRTP and then to perform near-surface disposal of the LRTP final product. Support to characterization and release of radioactive materials from regulatory control in Ukraine The completed activities: the methodology and procedures for material release from regulatory control have been elaborated and approved by the Regulator. Establishment of the facility for release of materials from regulatory control at ChNPP On , Contract No. NSI / 2015 / was made with VF, a.s. (the Czeck Republic). The Contractor continues the development of design documentation. 10
Cooling Pond decommissioning Water surface area 22.9 km2. Operational water level is 7 m higher than the water level in Pripyat river 11 Level of mbs Level of mbs Level of mbs Level of mbs
Cooling Pond decommissioning 12 In 2016 the decommissioning of Cooling Pond started. The monitoring results of volume activity of alpha-, beta-lln, Cs137 and Sr90 mixture in the aerial environment as well as of radioactive contamination levels along the CP shoreline demonstrate that no RL exceeding has been recorded. No tendency towards volume activity increase has been observed.
Shelter Implementation Plan Main stages: stabilization; construction of the confinement and preparation for FCM and HLW retrieval; retrieval of FCM and long-lived RAW, their conditioning with subsequent storage and disposal in accordance with the effective standards. New Safe Confinement (NSC) milestones: Contract award August 10, Start of the confinement construction - April 26, Finish of construction works, start of Arch sliding November NSC commissioning November
Construction of New Ventilation Stack (NVS) The new ventilation stack (NVS) was installed and commissioned. The old Ventilation Stack VS-2 was dismantled. 14
Construction of NSC The work started on April 26, 2012 Total weight of the Arch structures will be 37,000 tons. Arch height m, width m, length m. Arch service life is 100 years. On November 29, 2016, the Arch sliding to its design position was completed. 15
Construction of enclosing perimeter The project of Reinforcement and Sealing of ChNPP Generation II Building Structures upon which the Arch end walls will be abutted Implementation period is
