It s easy being green The Greening of Donald Bren Hall and UCSB Dennis J. Aigner, Dean Donald Bren School of Environmental Science & Management University of California, Santa Barbara
SCIENCE, MANAGEMENT, AND LAW CONVERGING TO SHAPE THE FUTURE The Bren School is a graduate school offering a professional master s program and research Ph.D. program in environmental science and management. It also is headquarters to a University of California system-wide graduate program linking students and faculty throughout the 10 campus system in the areas of science, management, law and policy. This program is unique in the UC System. The Bren School s mission is to play a leading role in researching environmental issues, training research scientists and professionals, and identifying and solving environmental problems around the world. The Donald Bren Hall Project is a manifestation of the School s mission. It is a model demonstration site in the UC System and in the State of California.
Project Description Four story 84,672 sf building 21,058 sf of laboratory space 25,246 sf of classrooms, offices, and conference rooms $26 M budget LEED Pilot Project..Platinum Pending
Project History 1992 Design of Building began 1994 Founding Dean appointed 1997 Bond initiative passes 1998 First Advisory Board meeting 1998 Project was reviewed by: Rocky Mountain Institute, Southern California Edison, Santa Barbara County Innovative Building Review Committee, Sustainability Project s Green Building Committee Late 1998 Introduced to USGBC and became part of the 1.0 LEED Pilot Program
USGBC LEED rating system Planning Sustainable Sites Improving Energy Efficiency Conserving Materials/Resources Enhancing Indoor Environmental Quality Safeguarding Water
Improving Energy Efficiency Full building commissioning Large windows throughout structure maximize day lighting Day lighting is coupled with efficient bulbs, electronic ballasts, and lighting controls (both motion/heat and ambient light) Windows in the Office Wing are interlocked to the heaters (when the window is open, the heater is automatically shut off)
Improving Energy Efficiency The Office Wing has operable windows and an operable transom over the door no air conditioning Air changes are 6 per hour in the first floor lab wing Air changes are 8 per hour in the second floor lab wing The fume hoods are variable air volume (VAV) and use variable frequency drives within the mechanical system Cooling towers received an innovation credit and are three different sizes and stage on demand The Bren chiller is connected to the campus chilled water loop
Improving Energy Efficiency We use an 85% efficient Parker Boiler In our DOE2 energy model, we surpass Title 24 by more than 31% This summer, we will add a roof-integrated photovoltaic system that will generate 7-10% of the building s power cleanly on site We may also be adding a fuel cell in the near future
Conserving Materials/Resources Use of local materials (350 mile radius) Construction waste management plan (required contractor to recycle 75% of the waste; we are currently showing that 93.5% has been recycled on site) Energy Star purchasing program Bren School recycling program (89% of our waste is recycled per our February 2002 audit)
Conserving Materials/Resources Reuse: Carpet Milliken EarthSquare Sustainably harvested/natural: Cork flooring Wood paneling, furnishings, & benches Linoleum flooring
Conserving Materials/Resources Recycled content: Storm drain piping (HDFE) Fly-ash mix in the concrete Steel/rebar/door frames/tree grates Fireproofing material Insulation/drywall Ceiling tiles & grids Wall and furnishing fabrics Lab casework-primeboard Rubber flooring Ceramic tiles/bathroom partitions/bathroom countertops Furnishings (minimum 60% content)
Safeguarding Water Toilets on first floor use reclaimed water Automatic flush valves on toilets Waterless urinals Automatic valves on bathroom sinks Water conserving cooling towers Water efficient landscape/reclaimed water for irrigation
Setting New Standards The Bren School at UCSB is a role model for all buildings and campuses in California. First building in UC system to achieve LEED status Official Pilot Project of the University of California - Governor Gray Davis Building California s Sustainable Future: A Blueprint for State Facilities Governor s Executive Order D Set precedent requiring that all new UCSB capital projects meet LEED certification (over $630 Million in Capital Projects planned over the next 7 years). A living laboratory for high performance sustainable design and construction
