Rio Tinto s $6.4B modernization of the Kitimat smelter, which marked its first year of full production in 07, is the single largest investment by a private company in British Columbia. Rio Tinto increased its production at Kitimat by almost 50 percent and reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by half. We are the largest mining and metals business operating in Canada today, with around people working at over 5 sites and operations across the country. In 08, Rio Tinto celebrates the 45 th anniversary of our incorporation as a company. Rio Tinto has longstanding partnerships with communities, businesses, customers and institutions across Canada to create mutual value, improve our business performance, and demonstrate responsible leadership in our sector. We are invested in Canadians and communities and are a committed partner in the stewardship of Canada s natural resources. Rio Tinto s extensive operations in Canada include mining interests in iron ore, diamonds, and titanium dioxide. In addition to mining, we are proud to operate some of the most energy efficient and sustainable alumina and aluminum smelting and processing facilities in the world, right here in Canada. This year, we are proud to achieve the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certification. Rio Tinto is the first company to meet the rigorous performance criteria for responsible production, greenhouse gas emissions, waste management, material stewardship, and biodiversity. We also undertake exploration activities, and operate research and development centres, port and rail facilities, and technical and sales service centres, with hydroelectric facilities in British Columbia and Quebec. Rio Tinto recently announced that its Montreal office, currently the global headquarters for the Aluminum business, would also serve as a global hub for Rio Tinto operations. By pioneering the use of innovative technology, we produce the materials essential for human progress. Low carbon aluminum Rio Tinto Aluminum s Canadian energy portfolio is 00 percent carbon free. It is the cleanest in the industry and mainly from self-generated hydropower facilities. Because of this, and our world-class AP technology, in Canada we produce some of the lowest carbon footprint aluminum in the world, providing the materials essential to transition to a low-carbon future. Windpower in Diavik The Diavik Diamond Mine operates the largest hybrid wind-diesel power facility at a remote mine site in the world. Since coming on line in 0, the windfarm has offset Diavik s diesel use by over 8 million litres and reduced the overall GHG emissions by 5 thousand tonnes. Aluminum plays a very important role for us and our promise to the customer is that they re always going to have a sustainably produced, high quality product. Rio Tinto was a very early adopter of the concept of responsible aluminum, and we re very proud to be working closely with them, together, as part of the ASI. Together with Agro-00, we are looking to recycle our by-products so that they can be used as nutrient additives in agriculture. Our goal is to reduce our waste and find innovative uses for the materials we produce. 08 will also mark the opening of IOC s Wabush mining project in Labrador West. This $79M investment will increase our ore output by about five million tonnes per year and extend the life of the mine by years. Headquartered in Montreal, its fully integrated facilities include high-quality bauxite mines, large-scale alumina refineries and some of the world s most technologically advanced primary aluminum smelters. Due to hydropower in British Columbia and Quebec, and its AP technology, Rio Tinto produces some of the lowest carbon footprints for aluminum smelting in the world, right here in Canada. Diamonds Located 00 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, the Diavik Diamond Mine began production in 00 and became an integrated surface and underground mining operation in 0. The mine produces predominantly gemquality diamonds destined for high-end jewelry in all major consumer markets around the world. The Diavik Diamond Mine is instrumental in making Canada the world s third largest diamond producer by value. Aluminum product Saguenay, Quebec Diavik Diamond Mine Northwest Territories Iron Ore The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) is a leading Canadian producer of iron ore pellets and concentrate, serving customers worldwide. The company operates a mine, a concentrator and a pelletizing plant in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as port facilities located in Sept-Iles, Quebec. It also operates a 48 kilometer railway that links the mine to the port. Ilmenite and Titanium Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) pioneered the process of removing iron from ilmenite and has operated in Quebec for more than 65 years. It is one of the leading manufacturers of raw materials for the titanium dioxide industry and a producer of high-quality cast iron, steel and metal powders, with a mining facility at Lac Tio in Havre-Saint-Pierre and a cutting-edge metallurgical complex in Sorel-Tracy. RTFT s open pit mine sits on the largest massive rock ilmenite deposit in the world. Tłı chǫ Įmbè Program Rio Tinto partnered with the Tłįchǫ Government on the Įmbè program that connects youth and elders in an intensive cultural learning program. As a part of this program, members of Diavik s environment team organized water and sediment sampling workshops, showcasing the various careers and opportunities in mining. Our Statement of Commitment to Indigenous Peoples outlines our focus on continued partnership in the areas of: Education, skills and training Cultural education and preservation Economic development Environmental stewardship Committed to Indigenous education As a company with innovation, science and technology at our core, we recognize the value of education as a building block for strong, thriving communities today and in the future. In partnership with Indspire, we sponsor the Rio Tinto Award for Indigenous Students, a bursary program that supports Canadian Indigenous youth as they pursue postsecondary studies and training. Indspire has a proven track record 95% of students supported by Indspire graduate. Rio Tinto also sponsors Alloprof, which provides free homework help to all elementary, high school, and adult general education students in Quebec both by phone and online. Ashley Moreau Indspire Recipient Pathways to education Rio Tinto pledged $.5M between 07 and 00 to help give Quebec students from low-income communities the tools and life skills to graduate from high school. Pathways serves close to 000 students in Quebec. Through Pathways, Rio Tinto supported the creation of PASS, a unique program developed in partnership with the Innu community of Mashteuiatsh, Quebec. The only program of its kind with an Indigenous community in Canada, PASS provides homework support and culturally relevant afterschool activities to First Nations youth living on reserve. We are also a proud supporter of the Breakfast Club of Canada, helping to provide a healthy breakfast to more than 00 students in 4 schools across northern British Columbia and Quebec. Traditional knowledge panel in Diavik The Traditional Knowledge Panel operating in Diavik brings together Indigenous elders and youth selected by their community to engage in environmental management and monitoring, most notably as it relates to closure planning for the mine. The Traditional Knowledge Panel applies their knowledge of historical caribou migrations and behaviour, water quality and flow patterns, vegetation and the interaction of all aspects of the environment to identify concepts, values, understandings, and complexities to be considered for closure options across the site. Watershed management in Saguenay The safe management of Rio Tinto s hydroelectric facilities in Quebec is critically important to the business. Rio Tinto pioneered the creation of flood monitoring technology and we can now precisely anticipate which areas of the community will be impacted by potential flood events. This system was tested in 07, when record levels of rainfall lead to significant flooding in the Saguenay Lac-Saint- Jean region. Our flood prediction technology and our close partnership with the community helped to protect public safety and prevent further damage. By listening carefully to the goals and concerns of our stakeholders and communities, and consistently aiming to align their needs and our own, we work to develop more responsible ways to find, mine, and process the minerals and metals to improve modern life. Throughout this process, safety remains at the forefront of everything we do. RTFT supports wetlands in Grèves Regional Park Rio Tinto invested in the protection of wetlands at the Grèves Regional Park near the Sorel-Tracy plant, by funding the development of a raised walking path. The new path will allow residents to access the area, for free, while protecting the surrounding ecosystem. Rio Tinto Aluminum and CGI four year partnership With a focus on safety and productivity, Rio Tinto partnered with Canadian firm CGI to further boost the performance of aluminum operations through the use of advanced data analytics and information technology systems. CGI will provide specialized support to Rio Tinto s Aluminum Operational Centre in Saguenay Lac-St-Jean over the next four years under a $0M contract. IOC celebrated for Transportation Safety IOC was recognized for its commitment to safety by the Quebec Transport Excellence Awards, for the creation of geotechnical risk management database for the railway operations. Since the database s implementation in 07, IOC has been able to anticipate and prevent dangerous events that occur as a result of erosion created by adverse weather conditions. White Sturgeon Conservation Program Rio Tinto partnered with the District of Vanderhoof, BC Freshwater Fisheries, and the Governments of British Columbia and Canada to build and operate the Nechako White Sturgeon Hatchery. The annual Nechako White Sturgeon Release Day is a demonstration of Rio Tinto s commitment to protecting this endangered species.
