Project Photos Project Team staff from the Yellow River WRF plant operations group, CH2M HILL, Jacobs, Precision Planning, Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources, GE/Zenon, and PC Construction celebrate the start up of the Membrane Bioreactor Facility. 1
At top is the Before photo of the Yellow River Water Reclamation Facility, taken March Pictured bottom is the After photo, taken March The old facilities were demolished in phases and new high-technology, maximum efficiency treatment facilities were built on the same site. The improvements resulted in the new plant taking up less than half of the footprint of the old plant 2
The new Operations Center, which was completed in December 2010, earned LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. When planning for the construction of this portion of the water reclamation facility expansion, the team expressed two essentials for the new Operations Center: comfort for the building s occupants, and having the facility serve as an educational tool for the community to learn about water efficiency and treatment. 3
Specific green features incorporated into this 10,000-square-foot Operations Center include: A new site design which reduces the amount of storm water run-off by more than 35 percent A water-efficient landscape design using non-potable treated water from the treatment plant Low-flow water fixtures and reuse of non-potable treated water from the treatment plant for flushing More than 81 percent of occupied areas qualify as daylit; individual lighting controls, occupancy sensors, and daylight sensors were incorporated to dim lighting when natural light is available Use of FSC-certified Glulam beams throughout the building Use of certified Green Label Plus carpeting 92 percent of construction waste totaling 990 tons was diverted from the landfill In general, the building boasts a 62 percent reduction in its overall water use and includes 57 percent of vegetated open space. 4
The photos show the new Operations Center during construction. This walkway from the Operations Center connects to the biological reactor basins deck. 5
The two new odor-controlled equalization tanks hold 20 million gallons each and are 265 feet in diameter with a 50-foot sidewater depth. 6
Constructing the equalization tanks involved the largest single concrete pour ever made on a Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources project, when 3,444 cubic yards of concrete were poured between 1 a.m. and 5 p.m. on a Saturday in September The Project Team succeeded in coordinating an effort that included a concrete truck delivery every two minutes for 14 hours. Pictured below are shots of the pour taken during the nighttime hours and daytime hours 7
The addition of membrane biological reactor technology at Yellow River is among the world s largest municipal installation. The first three photos are the completed facility, followed by three shots taken during construction. 8
The first photo shows the filter bays being completed. The other shots involve the installation of the filter cartridges in the Membrane Biological Reactor Building. 9
On September 21, 2009, the Atlanta area experienced a rain event that created flooding in excess of the 500-year flood limits and the Yellow River overflowed its banks around the plant project site. The water damaged the existing pump station to the point that it was no longer able to operate. The Project Team determined that it was critical to get the newly constructed influent pumps into service. The team worked around the clock and within hours of the water level decreasing, the new pumps were started up and began operating and pumping successfully. Most of the other treatment plants in the Atlanta area were out of service for weeks and even months, but Yellow River was back up in full operation within 3 days. This photo below shows a raincoat that caught on a tree branch during the flood, demonstrating the depth that the Yellow River rose during flooding. 10
The top left photo shows the crew re-purposing a 1970 vintage aerated grit tank into a new influent pump station wet well. Top right is a 48-inch manifold for the new influent pump station. Additional photos are of construction of the new pumping facilities, including the Electrical Building. 11
Pictured are photos of additional treatment facilities that were constructed new on the same site after the old facilities were demolished in phases. 12
A prime example of the Project Team s commitment to customer service is the new Maintenance Building on the plant site. During construction, the Builder required safe and weather-proof onsite storage for construction materials and equipment. The Project Team designed and constructed a Warehouse with a foundation, a permanent 25-year standing seam roof, and metal siding. During the final months of project completion, the Warehouse was converted into a permanent Maintenance Building for plant staff. Masonry veneer was added to the exterior walls and interior offices were built. 13
According example of the Project Team s commitment to the Owner and community involved the plant entrance. Prior to this treatment plant improvements project, the driveway to the plant was located around the other side of the heavily vegetated bend of Tom Smith Road shown in the photos. Drivers turning left out of the plant had impaired visibility and accident potential with oncoming vehicles, especially during the peak drop-off and pick-up hours by parents whose children attend a private school located across the street from the plant. The Project Team developed a design for relocating the plant driveway directly across from the school driveway (as shown), so that vehicles exiting each location have clear visibility of each other and of passing roadway traffic. 14
Below is a laser scan of the original site. Although it appears to be from the air, the actual laser scanning was done on the ground to produce a 3D image (point cloud data).at bottom is a 3D BIM image of the entire site. 15
Photo Credits Permission is granted to CMAA by the individual photographers for use of these photos. The aerial shots on Page 2 are courtesy of Smith Aerial Photos The large photos at the top of Pages 3 and 4 are courtesy of professional photographer David Christensen The remaining photographs were taken by Project Team members from CH2M HILL, Jacobs, PPI, or PC Construction 16
