3 Canada: A Global Energy Leader Now the world s 9 th largest producer of wind energy by installed capacity, Canada is already powering more than three million homes. Our wind energy developments create a more modern, cost-effective, fl exible and environmentallyfriendly electricity system, at home and abroad was a landmark year for wind energy in Canada. During the recent procurement process in Alberta, the lowest prices ever for renewable energy in Canada were recorded, with contracts awarded for 3.7cents/kWh for almost 600 megawatts () of new wind power generation. 9 12,239 total installed wind energy capacity in Canada... enough to power over 3 million homes That s 6% of Canada s electricity demand! 9 th in the world for installed capacity #1 new source of electricity: WIND ENERGY Largest source of new electricity generation in Canada for over a decade 295 Number of wind farms across Canada 6,415 Number of gridconnected turbines in Canada 15% 5-year annual growth rate of wind energy in Canada (1,159 /year) 67% Rate of decline of wind energy costs since 2009 GROWTH IN new installed capacity $800 million investment in new wind energy 10 total new wind energy projects 5 new projects with Aboriginal Peoples, municipal or local ownership
4 Wind Energy: Canada s Choice for New Electricity Generation The world is rising to meet the challenge of the Paris Agreement on climate change and wind energy is a key driver in Canada s energy transition. Wind energy has been the largest source of new electricity generation in Canada for over a decade, and in 2017, Canada produced over 30,000 GWh of wind-generated electricity. Last year, utilities and developers commissioned 10 new wind energy projects in Nova Scotia, Ontario, and British Columbia, collectively bringing enough new clean electricity online to meet the needs of more than 90,000 homes. Canada s federal government remains committed to its climate targets, and our provinces continue to turn to wind energy for its reliable, low-cost and emissionsfree electricity highlights include: Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) and the Government of Alberta announced the implementation of the fi rst phase of the Renewable Electricity Program (REP) This program has resulted in the lowest-ever price for wind energy generation in Canada making wind energy the lowestcost option for new electricity generation in the country. Ontario continued to lead Canada in installed wind energy capacity, adding 119 of new wind, bringing that province s total installed capacity to 4,900. The 179 Meikle Wind farm in northeastern British Columbia was the largest wind farm commissioned in Canada in The facility increased the province s wind-power capacity by more than one third, to almost 674, and made B.C. the 2017 growth leader. A trio of Nova Scotia communities took advantage of the province s community feed-in tariff program to bring three new facilities online collectively totalling Canada s wind energy market is rising to the challenge, demonstrating that it is the most cost-competitive, flexible and sustainable choice for new opportunities across the country. CANADA S CURRENT INSTALLED CAPACITY: ,239 (as of December 2017) May not sum to total due to rounding YT 698 BC AB NT 1, SK 221 NU 258 MB ON 4,900 3,510 QC 294 NB NL PE 610 NS
5 Emerging Opportunities: Decarbonization and Electrifi cation Will Drive Future Growth As of the start of 2018, 295 wind farms were operating in Canada, powered by 6,415 individual turbines. These facilities bring economic development and diversifi cation to over 100 rural communities across the country, through land lease income, property tax payments, and ownership revenue. More action on climate change means increased electrifi cation and this represents a signifi cant opportunity for wind energy. In the coming years, the country will see more distributed generation, greater variety in the grid and more variability on the supply side. It is a time of great transition and change within the electricity sector, and will continue to be for at least a decade. NEW LEADERSHIP: ALBERTA & SASKATCHEWAN Alberta and Saskatchewan have taken the fi rst steps to meet their commitments to procure up to 6,600 of new wind energy by FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SERIOUS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE Starting in 2018, Canada s Federal Government is implementing a pan-canadian price on carbon. Canada s Federal Government is also aiming for 90 per cent of Canada s electricity to be carbonfree by 2030 and has pledged to run all its operations on renewable energy by As Canada embraces electrification and decarbonization, many opportunities are emerging across the country, including 900 of new procurement opportunities in 2018: Canada s electricity grid is already more than 80 per cent emissions-free the cleanest in the G7. By further capitalizing on our wind, hydro and solar resources, we can aim to a reliable, near-zero emissions grid by Alberta is attracting billions of dollars in new investment in renewable energy. Its competitive electricity-supply auction made wind energy the lowest-cost option for new electricity in Canada. Now the province has announced plans for an additional 700 under a second and third round of procurement. Saskatchewan s renewable energy strategy calls for renewable sources including wind energy to make up 50 per cent of the province s generating capacity within 15 years. SaskPower has issued a request for proposal for up to 200 of wind energy. Ontario continues to lead Canada in installed wind energy capacity. It added 119 of new wind in 2017, bringing the province s total installed capacity to 4,900. Ontario s updated Long-term Energy Plan, released in October 2017, shows a growing need for new and affordable emissions-free electricity beginning in the early 2020s. The Quebec and Atlantic regions are well positioned for export opportunities. Many States in the U.S. northeast have very ambitious renewable energy goals and face the retirement of aging generating facilities. Clean power imports from Canada are increasingly seen as a reliable and cost-effective solution. A wind-hydro bundled product represents a signifi cant economic opportunity for exports to the U.S. In many markets, the combined bundle qualifi es for lucrative renewable energy credits that are not available to hydro alone.
