WELCOME TO ADVISOR Ci AdvisorCi is a new way of looking at chemical dosing software. We have exceeded all industry standards relating to scale prediction by including complex ion formation and improved temperature correction factors to gain maximum RO system recovery. The complex ion engine can accurately calculate saturations and dosages for even the most complex and highly stressed applications. Welcome to Advisor Ci AdvisorCi uses scientifically validated activity coefficient and published peer-reviewed saturation calculations. Updated solubility products, k sp take into account temperature, ph, and ionic strength. These changes are then modeled and applied to each projection. ADVISORCi CALCULATES THE FOLLOWING CHEMICAL DOSING: Antiscalant Biocide Coagulant Cleaners Dechlorination ph adjustment Dosing pump flowrates Dosing tank sizes Chemical consumption Chemical usage You can perform calculations in any order, but we recommend that project information is completed first, followed by the antiscalant projection as this is key to sizing all the pre-treatment equipment. The following pages guide you through each screen.
Getting Started GETTING STARTED Start by registering your copy of the software. This is required to run the software and to receive updates as new iterations are released. Set your unit of measurement by selecting the appropriate Region. Americas will set the default units (and the chemical dosing units) to imperial. The selection of any other region will default to the metric system. Select Change.adv File Location to save the path to where files will be saved on your computer. Lastly, you can select your software language preference. Projection reports language preference is selected on the print page, not in registration to accommodate recipient-specific needs. SIMPLE NAVIGATION Once registration is complete the new AdvisorCi homepage will open. The homepage features a left navigation that guides you through the process of entering project data and reviewing result summaries. You will notice a dynamic hover function that highlights parts of the system as you navigate over the corresponding chemical. Tool tips are available along the bottom of the homepage including the AdvisorCi Users Guide, a new feature spotlight, and easy access to My Projects. CREATING A NEW PROJECTION EASY STEPS. Click on Start Here Project Info to enter your project details. This is the information used as the basic project data for any projection. Chose specific membrane manufacturer or general default membrane type setting. Select aerated or non aerated feed water for well water applications or the software will automatically default to aerated which provides worst case results. Water type is used with temperature to suggest coagulant and biocide types and dose rates.. For an antiscalant projection, click on Antiscalant and input your water analysis data, then click Next to run your calculations. Save your file. You can now calculate other products in any order.. Generate a report by clicking the Print icon to print or save as a PDF.
ANTISCALANTS Antiscalants The antiscalant calculation in Advisor Ci is based on the requirement for an inhibitor to control scale in the membrane system concentrate. Raw water analysis data, temperature, and system recovery are used to calculate the concentrate. This analysis provides the scaling potential to calculate the requirement for antiscalant, along with updated solubility constant (k sp ), curves for temperature, ph, and ionic strength. RAW WATER If acid or sodium hydroxide is used to alter the feed water ph, then the required chemical may be selected from the ph correction drop-down box. Hydrochloric or sulfuric acid may be selected to decrease the feed ph, or sodium hydroxide may be used to increase the feed water ph. The revised level of carbon dioxide and carbonate is displayed as the ph calculation is made. Carbon dioxide, carbonate, bicarbonate levels in feedwater. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). Ionic strength, calculated from inputted data and used in calculating solubility products for each salt. Saturation levels in feedwater. Once the water analysis is complete, the antiscalant calculation is made by clicking the Next button. You may input the raw water analysis as mg/l ion, mg/l calcium carbonate or meq/l. The corresponding values for that ion are automatically calculated and displayed as each input is made. A running total of anions and cations are calculated and the required level of sodium (in the event of a shortage of cations) or chloride (in the event of a shortage of anions) is added to balance the analysis. Please note: ph adjustment is not always required for scale control. It is necessary to input the feedwater analysis for all projections, even those that will have a brine analysis entered, as this screen provides ph and temperature data used in other calculations.
Antiscalants CALCULATION Advisor Ci calculates saturations for all salts at recoveries of -99% before the graph is shown. The calculation run time is quick but may vary based on computer speed. Brine doses are applied to control scale and back calculated to a feed dose based on the selected recovery Select a Vitec antiscalant from the drop down list on the top right. There may be several antiscalant options that can control scaling in a system. Please consult your Avista representative for the most appropriate product for your application. The dose rate of antiscalant will display below the selected antiscalant. In the event that the scaling potential is outside the antiscalant s limits, N/A (not applicable) will display in place of a dose. Adjusting system recovery will change the concentrate analysis, thus changing the scaling potential. The saturation of iron, manganese and aluminium is based on the feed water concentration and therefore these bars do not move with a change in recovery. A flow rate for the dosing pump is displayed. In the event that the flow rate is below the limits of the available pump, then a dilution may be applied to the antiscalant. The conventional membrane rejection calculations are not sufficiently accurate for a scaling projection in systems using nanofiltration type elements. Instead, enter the concentrate analysis by clicking the Concentrate Analysis. The Show Analysis button shows the user the actual brine analysis at selected recovery. Users may switch back to the chart by clicking the Show Chart button. The scaling tendencies for salts that are a concern in RO plants are displayed in graphical form, as well as a table beneath the graph. Once you are satisfied with your product selection, press the Submit button to return to the main page. Please note: System recovery is included to calculate the feed flowrate. These calculations will automatically update the Chemical Design and Chemical Usage Summaries.
BRINE CONCENTRATOR Avista AdvisorCi now allows you to calculate RO systems with multiple stages. The brine concentrator acts as an additional stage and can model any type of system post RO used to increase recovery. For example, the brine concentrator feature can be used for three stage systems, four stage systems, brine recovery ROs and newer technologies such as closed-circuit desalination. Brine Concentrator The brine concentrator feature allows for an antiscalant that is different from the primary RO antiscalant to be dosed in the concentrator system. The feature also permits the user to enter an inter-stage ph adjustment if needed to further increase recovery. Selecting Include Brine Concentrator will add a second set of calculations to the AdvisorCi antiscalant calculations. The software takes the brine from the primary RO and uses this as the feed to the brine concentrator. Membrane type for the brine concentrator is selected here.
Brine Concentrator Antiscalant selection for st and nd stages. The same product or two different products can be used. Antiscalant dose for both stages. If a different product is chosen for the second stage, the antiscalant residual for the first stage will not be counted in the brine concentrator. Pilot work will need to be done to determine the optimal dose for that RO. Primary and brine concentrator recovery. Here the recoveries for both systems can be adjusted. Below shows the overall recovery for the entire system. The brine from the primary RO will become the feed to the brine concentrator, so changing that recovery will directly affect the saturations for the brine RO. Changing the recovery for the brine RO will not change the saturations of the primary RO. Inter-stage ph adjust. If a ph adjust is required for the brine RO, the selection of acid or caustic can be chosen here. Saturations graph. This graph shows the saturations as a function of the limits of the products. The white lines represent the primary RO while the yellow bars represent the brine concentrator. As long as bars are below 00%, the saturations are within product limits. Reject and nd reject. These columns show the saturation (or mg/l ccpp) in the brine of the primary and the brine concentrator RO. The Show Analysis button will display the water makeup for all parts of the system.
Brine Concentrator When using the same product through out the system, it may be possible to get a 0.00 mg/l dose for the brine concentrator. In this case there is enough carryover from the first stage to cover the brine concentrator. When the Show Analysis page is pressed, the water analysis for all parts of the primary RO and the brine concentrator is shown. 7
Biocides BIOCIDES Biocide selection and optimization for an RO plant should be considered during the first year of plant operation. Many plants operate successfully without the use of a biocide as there is no valid test available to determine the potential requirement for a biocide at the design stage. The biocide dosing can only be based on experience, either from similar plants or during operation. Advisor Ci includes a recommendation for biocide dosing based on the water source and the operating temperature. This allows a designer to include the necessary equipment or designate space for a dosing system should it become necessary in the future. Select the appropriate water source and temperature for a recommended biocide and application rate. In the event that sufficient experience is available, then the second option Use the following biocide may be selected and the actual biocide dosing regime chosen. The dosing pump rate for the plant will be calculated based on the total feed flow to the RO plant. 8
COAGULANTS Coagulants The best method of selecting a coagulant for use in pretreating an RO plant is using either jar tests or a pilot study on site. If this is not possible or practical, we have included options to make an estimate based solely on the water source or the feed water turbidity and color. Select the correct water source from the drop down list. As the source of the water changes, the recommendation for coagulant based on the water source can be seen as an option immediately below the selection box. A coagulant recommendation is automatically displayed based on the Raw Water Type selection. Click Estimate the coagulant consumption based on these raw water parameters to take into account color and turbidity. Use drop downs to change these parameters. If jar tests or site trials have been completed, then an actual dose rate may be entered by selecting the third option. As the coagulant dose rates are selected the dosing pump rate will be shown in a box. If the pump rate is too low to be dosed accurately with the available dosing pumps, then the concentration in the dosing tank may be varied to increase the dosing pump rate. An allowance for backwash water may be made as a percentage of feed flow, to account for additional chemical. 9
Cleaners CLEANERS Advisor Ci can determine cleaning calculations for a system of up to three stages. } Select the number of stages, number of pressure vessels in each stage, and number of elements in each of the pressure vessels. A calculation will be made for volumes of fluid held in the pressure vessels, a suitable CIP tank and the volume of the pipework. These may be altered directly by entering a volume or altering the basis of the calculations. Double click on the entry fields for vessel volume, CIP tank or pipework to make the changes. 0
Cleaners CLEANER SELECTION The second part of the cleaning section relates to chemical selection. 7 The cleaners may be manually selected by using the drop-down if the Select Cleaners based on the following foulants box is unchecked. Altering the number of cleans per year will change the chemical consumption figures in the summary tables. The most appropriate cleaners for the application may be selected by clicking the Select Cleaners based on the following foulants box. Select the primary foulant to be removed or, if the foulant is not known, select Maintenance Clean for a general purpose cleaner. The selection may be limited to only powdered cleaners or only liquid cleaners by selecting those options. Any number of secondary foulants may be added. 7 Selecting the degree of fouling affects the recommended concentration of the chemicals.
Dechlorination DECHLORINATION Dechlorination is essential for any RO plant feedwater containing chlorine. The most common chemicals used for dechlorination are sodium metabisulfite powder (SMBS) or a solution of sodium bisulfite or AntiChlor 7. It is important that the chemical used is catalyst-free. Advisor Ci calculates a recommended dose of each chemical based on the level of chlorine present in the feed, and the concentration of the supplied chemical in the tank. The option to dechlorinate before or after media filtration is provided, which allows for the additional chemical required to dechlorinate water for backwash. If SMBS powder is selected, then the dilution in the tank is automatically set at a maximum of 0%, as this is the maximum solubility practical for this chemical. Check this box to specify free and combined chlorine for the feedwater. If the box is not ticked only the total chlorine option is available and this assumes all chlorine is as free chlorine. If the box is ticked then you can specify free or combined chlorine. If combined chlorine is specified a higher rate of dechlorination agent is required to complete the reduction of the oxidant. Avista recommends that the water is dechlorinated after filtration, as this will reduce the possibility of biogrowth in the filtration system and improve the filtration efficacy.
CHEMICAL DESIGN SUMMARY The chemical design summary gives a table of the products selected with dose rate, concentration in the tank, and the total pump flowrate to satisfy all of the trains. Chemical Design Summary By clicking the chemical category, a design summary for the chemical dosing system will display. For most chemicals, there are three options for the chemical dosing:. Single pump and dosing tank dedicated to each train.. Common dosing for the entire plant.. Single pump per train drawing from a common tank. If a common dosing system for the whole plant is selected, then the number of dosing pumps may be varied. Please Note: The coagulant dosing system is limited to having a common dosing system for the entire plant.
Chemical Usage Summary CHEMICAL USAGE SUMMARY The chemical usage summary provides an overview of the products selected, dose rates and annual chemical consumption. From this screen, a chemical consumption may be generated. A time-based quantity may be selected: daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly. Based on the time period set at the top of the screen, a recommendation for the number of packs of each selected chemical will be generated. The consumption rate units per day will display to indicate if a smaller pack size would be more appropriate. Delivery details can be added, which together with the pack sizes and quantities, will be shown on the quotation request page on the print out.
REPORT GENERATION Report Generation The projection report is generated by clicking the Print button located at the top of each page. 7 Pages for Antiscalant, Dechlorination, Biocide, Coagulant, and Cleaners will be generated. Customize the report by clicking categories that you would like to include. Categories that were not calculated will not be available. Produce a quotation request page based on the inputs made on the Chemical Usage Summary page. You can run the Advisor software in one language and select a printout in a different language. You my select to print or generate a PDF. 7 Select category to be included in the file name.
