2 Why an integrated system? To overcome a stovepipe organization model The development of a "multiple" approach in data collection: heterogeneity and variability (also in time) of the sources used for the production of statistical information The need for a reading able to interpret the connections between phenomena (economic and social, demand and supply,.....) It results in the need for: favouring process rather than thematic aspects since the deployment of applications and methodologies are independent from the specificity of information and therefore enable a high generalization identifying a transversality in information: as far as may be possible the integrated system must be thought - in its contents - as the only one supporting more statistical processes. 1

3 What is the Integrated System of Registers (SIR)? The SIR is a single logical and functional environment to support the consistency of Istat statistical production processes consistency in identification and estimation for the whole integrated system of units and variables (at least some core variables).
