1 Outline AAPM -- TG-127 Michael Yester, Ph.D. University of Alabama at Birmingham TG Scope Current General Status of MOC in eyes of TG-127 Continuing Education SAMs PQI Summary TG Scope The charge of the TG is: 1. Act as a resource and liaison with the ABR trustees to provide information on MOC to AAPM members, 2. provide information/suggestions on activities that meet MOC requirements, 3. insure that educational activities are available to members. The TG is co-chaired by Michael Yester and Per Halvorsen. TG and ABR A major point of emphasis is that the governing body for MOC is The ABMS. The ABR has to follow the ABMS guidelines and the ABR program has to be approved by the ABMS. The ABR Physics Trustees have been very helpful and willing to work with the TG in any way in which they can within the scope of the ABMS mandates. Over the years the TG has had several conference calls with the Trustees to discuss matters. 1
2 MOC General Status Stable Program at present Concerns in the past related to CEU requirements Several iterations in the past 50 category 1/year (including SDEPs) 25 category 1/year; category 2/year (with SDEPs) 25 category 1/year (including SDEPs) Current tracks of effort CEUs in general SAMs Practice Quality Improvement TG Efforts TG under the Continuing Professional Development Committee With representation from Professional Council Effort has been put forward to provide resource material for members; newsletter articles Area set up on the AAPM web site under the BBS for TG system as a forum and a repository (Follow BBS link to TG - 127) This area is monitored on a regular basis Resources A Draft document for MOC has been developed and once updated will be uploaded to the web site A group will keep this up to date. Have asked that the link to this resource be made a hot button for easier access. Continuing Education A particular need relates to concern for other means of obtaining CEUs. Other venues include: Journal referee CEUs are being granted by most Journals now including Med. Phys. A list is being prepared for Journals that do not and effort will be put forward to try and remedy this. ABR item writing Proposed Committee work Proposal being submitted to CAMPEP relating to CEU credit for AAPM Committee work. 2
3 Lifelong Learning and Continuing Ed SAMs -- Self-Assessment Modules Requirement -- average 2 per year, no more than 4 in one calendar year Requires a learning experience Module to be at least 90 minutes As part of the modules, questions to be asked on the material; to be answered by each individual, but no pass/fail Answers to be given with explanation Information on how the attendee did relative to others References to be given for further information SAMs To Date 8 in 2007 at annual meeting 4 Therapy, 4 Diagnostic 7 put in Virtual Library for use with OCE for on-line credit (recording of one DX had technical problems) Did run into some problems for on-line use, but issues have been overcome. So a different type of presentation and thus the use of the Audience Response system. It was felt that this was the easiest way to accomplish the goals with minimal logistics SAMs DX, 4 TH and 1 Professional Approved (SAMs have to be approved by The ABR) Rules for submittal changing in Nov Concerning presentations: looking to have more focused topics and draft of word slides at time of submittal of application Purpose of SAMs is to provide an experience for the attendee to learn and provide a means for the attendee to measure understanding and have means to obtain further information SAMs 2008 SAMs are captured by Blue Sky and so will convert these presentations to On - Line SAMs Have tried to anticipate issues that arose last year; expect the process to obtain On-Line approval to be smoother this year. SAMs count for CEU credit and SAM credit 3
4 SAMs Currently an ad hoc group for SAMs within TG Effort underway to make this a more formal committee or subcommittee or Working Group in order to put more effort into making SAMs work smoothly Expect SAM sessions to become a separate entity at the annual meeting (currently part of the standard continuing education section) Part 4 of MOC Part 4 of MOC concerns Assessment of Practice Improvement Known as Practice Quality Improvement (PQI) White Paper in Med. Phys. The American Board of Radiology perspective on maintenance of certification: Part IV: Practice quality improvement in radiologic physics Med. Phys. 34, 4158 (2007) PQI One ingredient is training in PQI formalism Sessions were provided last year at the annual meeting Sessions to be planned on a routine basis for new Diplomates Working on incorporating such training into the Virtual Library Training sessions do not have to be from AAPM PQI Projects Possible projects: Individual Society Based peer review approved templates 4
5 TG and PQI Projects Efforts under way on two fronts 1. Outline for a Society based system has been drafted and conceptually fits ABR guidelines. 2. Create Templates for use by members Mike Taylor is heading up this group with the assistance of Per Halvorsen PQI -- Societal Based Involves Headquarters with programming. Hiring of additional personnel for various projects including this is underway. In essence the view is to have web-based system that would work along the lines of a manuscript submission Would have volunteers serving as referees Individual would register for a given discipline(s) Individual would outline types of work performed or undergoing for quality improvement (May be done in terms of TG reports, but not necessary) The basic tenet is that this would be a type of peer review Ongoing effort PQI Immediate Focus Develop templates that could be used by an individual Templates could be downloaded and used by the candidate (follow the steps) These will be pre-approved so the candidate will be assured that the project is acceptable Top Priority so that members can keep on track within the MOC time lines. PQI Resources A document is in preparation to serve as a Resource guide in addition to the information on The ABR web site. This will be a part of the Resource guide mentioned previously There will be a link within the Resource Guide to an expanded document relating to this part of MOC. (Sample projects are given on The ABR web site) Individuals from the TG will be attending a summit sponsored by The ABR in August which is based on creating such templates. 5

Summary MOC program is relatively stable now Efforts by TG have switched to the latter parts of the charge Resource and information source Insure that necessary Educational components of MOC are available to members. Work on SAMs Provide specific aids for PQI projects. 6
