2 GETTING WARRINGTON BACK TO WORK Local MP brings 850 people and 40 employers together at the Parr Hall WELCOME BY DAVID MOWAT MP I d like to take this opportunity to invite you to my next Annual Jobs Fair which will take place on 6th February Whether you are out of work but looking for a job or in a job but looking for a new challenge, the Jobs Fair is free and open to all. Before becoming your MP, I spent 30 years working in industry. I know what it takes to create jobs and I want to use my experience and connections in business to help create jobs for people in Warrington. Unemployment has been falling in Warrington and jobs are being created here faster than anywhere else in the country but we cannot afford to be complacent. That s why the work done by my Jobs Fair and regular Jobs Club are so important. I look forward to welcoming you to Warrington Jobs Fair People from Warrington flocked to the Parr Hall in February for David Mowat s 2nd Annual Jobs Fair. Over 40 employers including Sainsbury s, United Utilities and AMEC were on hand to offer vacancies and apprenticeships. Initial feedback after the event suggested that around 300 follow-up conversations were created as a result of the jobs fair. The event was sponsored by Ombudsman Services and Sellafield Ltd. The Parr Hall begins to fill up The Jobs Fair was the second organised by David Mowat, the MP for Warrington South. Last year 650 people attended a fair at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. The event is free of charge to job hunters and each organisation is given their own stall. As well as the opportunity to chat to stall holders, there are a number of seminars throughout the day and job seekers can take part in mock interviews to help them stand out. Jobs Fairs are a great way of bringing local people and local employees together as well as making people aware of the range of options and vacancies that are available. Queues build up outside the Parr Hall in anticipation of Warrington Jobs Fair Over 850 people came to visit the 2014 Jobs Fair and more than 40 companies exhibited David chats to the representatives from Sainsbury s Ltd, another major local employer Sellafi eld Ltd, which manages Britain s nuclear waste and employs over 10,000 people, also sponsored the event The Army Recruitment Service took a stand for the second year in a row Nuclear and energy engineering fi rm AMEC recently created 300 jobs at its site in Birchwood United Utilities, who employ 3,500 staff at Lingley Mere in Great Sankey, were one of the companies looking to recruit people for their apprenticeship scheme Ombudsman Services, which specialises in resolving consumer disputes, was one of the event sponsors Local security company Safeguard were amongst 40 organisations looking to take on new people

4 DAVID MOWATʼS JOBS CLUB David Mowat founded a Jobs Club in Warrington in In the 5 years since then, it has helped over 200 people either find a job or start their own business. The Jobs Club draws on the expertise and experience of local entrepreneurs to give job seekers the skills they need to succeed at interview or during a sift. Participants are given workshops to help improve their CVs, David coaches participants on their interview technique undergo mock interviews to help them work on their technique and learn tips to help them find and land the job which they want. As well as building their skills, the Club also helps participants build their confidence. Many of those who come to the club have been out of work for some time or have never been in the position of having to look for work before. One of the strengths of the club has been that it acts as a support group where all the Fact So far around 85% of Jobs Club participants moved back into employment or training after completing the full course. participants help each other to succeed. If you or someone you know might benefit from the Jobs Club, please a CV to wsca@talktalk.net Real PEOPLE Davidʼs Jobs Club gave Susan Kemp the support and guidance to help start her own business When David first founded the Jobs Club in 2009 he couldn t have imagined the overwhelming success of the programme. Susan who started her own business through the support of the club talks about how valuable this help was. I wanted to find a new career that fitted around my role as a full time mum. I came up with the idea of starting a baby massage business as it was something I enjoyed doing with my daughter when she was a baby. I noticed this service wasn t easily available to new mums in this area and felt that this was the ideal opportunity to take the plunge and get qualified as a baby massage instructor. Baby massage makes a difference to babies and parents, with great benefits including: promoting interaction, stimulation, relief of common baby ailments such as colic and relaxation for both baby and mum. I was eager to teach the skills and share the experience with parents. Many mums from all over Warrington and the surrounding areas have enjoyed my classes Launching Appleton Baby Massage wouldn t have been possible without David s Jobs Club and have forged friendships. The classes have been so successful that I ve now extended my service offering baby yoga as well. I ve had the support of mentors who have carried me through. It was invaluable being taught by experts in the business field who were prepared to share their knowledge and give sound advice. I ve been given the skills and confidence to start and run a business. Since starting I have been awarded a Bronze Website Award by Mumandworking 2014, which supports women in business. 5 WARRINGTON - ECONOMIC POWERHOUSE The Government s Long Term Economic Plan is helping to create jobs and secure the future for families in Warrington. The local businesses I talk to are starting to see their order books expand as confidence returns. At first, they will try to meet demand with their existing staff, meaning more overtime shifts, but as the pace picks up, they have no choice but to employ more people in order to keep up with demand. A recent report from the Centre for Cities highlights this trend as the recovery has taken hold, 28% of small businesses in Warrington have expanded and for every SME (small and medium enterprise) that has, 8 additional jobs have been created. 4,300 new jobs have been created in Warrington South since the General Election in Warrington also has the highest proportion of rapidly expanding or high growth SMEs which have expanded by 50% or more in the last 3 years. 1 in 6 of Warrington s small businesses have grown rapidly in the last few years more than anywhere else in the country. More people back in work means more people earning a pay packet and able to provide for their families. Importantly the growth in jobs is coming in full-time positions too, meaning more security for those now back in work. Of course, this doesn t mean that everything will now be rosy. There is always a gap between economic growth and wages and I understand that many families in Warrington are still having to make sacrifices in order to make ends meet. However, we are now heading firmly in the right direction and the Government s long term economic plan will secure the future for both Warrington and the country.
