Apprenticeships An apprenticeship is a paid job with related training. There are over 250 different types of apprenticeships available offering 1,700 job roles, ranging from Accountancy to Textiles, Engineering to Veterinary Nurse, Business Administration to Construction and Retail. Key Facts All apprenticeships have a training element which can be tailored to individual business need. There is no age limit to an apprenticeship, but applicants must live in England, not be in full-time education and must be over 16 years old. An apprentice must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week and their employment must be expected to last for a minimum of one year. Most of the training will be carried out at your premises. The rest can be provided by a local college or by a training organisation. Apprenticeships are offered at three levels:- Intermediate Apprenticeship (NVQ Level 2),on completion this is equivalent to 5 A* C GCSEs; Advanced Apprenticeship (NVQ Level 3) on completion this is equivalent to 2 A-Levels; Higher Apprenticeships on completion this is equivalent to a foundation degree.the level of an apprenticeship will be determined by the person s current skills level and experience. Government funding is available to cover part or all of the training costs. If your business is a small or medium sized Enterprise SME (less than 250 employees) and is new to employing apprentices i.e. none have been employed over the past 12 months, there could be an additional grant of up to 2000 for each apprentice employed (grant available for up to 3 apprentices recruited). There is no limit to the number of apprentices a business can take on. Businesses are expected to Pay the apprentice s wage of at least the National Minimum wage of 3.40 (as of October 2016), although many employers chose to pay more. * Offer the standard company staff benefits including pension contributions. Supply any uniform or specialist equipment required to carry out the role. Ensure an apprentice has the relevant supervision and support to complete the apprenticeship, the cost of which must be covered by the business. This must include an induction and relevant on the job training. Provide an apprenticeship agreement (similar to an employment contract) at the start of the apprenticeship.
Why should you recruit an apprentice? Apprentices have made an active choice to learn on the job and to make a commitment to a specific career. They therefore make very loyal employees. An apprentice can be trained from new to the standard required by your business The training you provide is directly relevant to your business and can be fully funded Apprentices can act as motivators to existing workforce and can help increase productivity and improve standards. Apprentices are an ideal way to fill a skills gap or train workers to acquire specialised skills. Support for you and your apprentice is provided throughout the training period, from initial recruitment through to awarding certificates of achievement. Additional cash grants are available to help you take on an apprentice. How do you recruit an apprentice? If you would like to recruit an apprentice then the first step is to find a suitable Approved Training Provider who will work with you to oversee and coordinate the whole package. The Training Provider is funded by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) and they will help you to: Create a job description, and a person specification Advertise and promote your vacancy Shortlist and identify suitable applicants for you to interview Help you with the interviews, if required Draw up the apprenticeship contract Enrol your apprentice onto appropriate qualifications at the correct level Assess the apprentices progress throughout the contract Arrange for certification at the end of the contract How we can help you Leeds Apprenticeship Hub is part of the Employment & Skills Department within Leeds City Council. They can provide free and impartial information and advice so you find the right person and the right type of training to suit your needs. They can help you to locate and choose a suitable Training Provider for your opportunity and they can work with the Training Provider to distribute and promote your vacancy across the whole city. Contact the Leeds Apprenticeship Hub: Call: employmentleeds@leeds.gov.uk
Sector based work academies What are they? Sector based work academies are designed to help you meet immediate and future recruitment needs as well as to recruit a workforce with the right skills to sustain and grow your business. A sector based work academy can last from 2-6 weeks and has three key components: Pre-employment training relevant to the needs of your business and sector A work experience placement offering opportunities to your business and the individual A guaranteed job interview The key feature of sector based work academies, is that they offer a flexible approach and the key components can be adapted to meet your needs. Why should you get involved? Your business could benefit from being part of sector based work academies for the following reasons: It is a flexible way to recruit staff with the right training and skills It is an opportunity to provide work experience placements for potential employees to ensure they are suited to that type of role and your business As an employer I would happily recommend them as they have taken the time to understand and listen to what it is I have needed and wanted from the process. They also have shown some great candidates to me and great work space at The Point. I could not be happier with what they have provided Get in touch (Chiquito s, White Rose Shopping Centre) If you are interested in taking part in a sector based work academy, get in touch with: Vicky Tindell-Starbuck Call: Vicky.tindell-starbuck@dwp.gsi.gov.uk

Could you offer work experience? Is your business interested in supporting people who are looking for work? Could you provide jobseekers with a positive experience of the working world? For some people, a lack of understanding of the working world is a significant barrier to finding and sustaining employment. The chance to undertake real work and adjust to the routines and habits of working life can significantly improve their employment prospects. What is work experience? Work experience enables unemployed people to volunteer for placements at a business for between 2-8 weeks. They are matched with suitable host businesses who complete a light touch selection process. The volunteers will continue to be paid their out of work benefits and the cost of childcare and travel. Why should you get involved? n By helping people to gain work experience, your business can reap real benefits, such as: Developing the supervisory and management skills of your workforce Enhancing your public profile by supporting your local community Accessing a pool of hidden talent people who offer enthusiasm and a fresh perspective to your business Promoting workforce diversity How to get involved... If you are interested in offering Work Experience and would like further information please contact Job Centre Plus, DWP: Call: Visit:
Case Studies Our recent work Sector based work academies A selection of sector based work academies with new and existing businesses from within the White Rose Shopping Centre have been held, including: Debenhams Chiquito s Pizza Hut As an employer I would happily recommend sector based work academies to any other employer as they have taken the time to understand and listen to what I needed and wanted from the process. (Chiquito s, White Rose Shopping Centre) The Point Recruitment Event, New Cinema and Restaurant Development 2017 The Point held a Recruitment Event in the White Rose Shopping Centre Atrium to raise awareness and recruit to vacancies in the New Cinema and Restaurant development. Over 800 people attended on the day with over 200 registered for additional support A carousel of hospitality hints and tips sessions ran throughout the day, attended by 300 people The Point Jobs Fair 2016 The Point hosted a seasonal Jobs Fair in response to requests from businesses to fill their Christmas vacancies. 31 businesses engaged with over 1,500 vacancies advertised Over 260 vacancies were filled from the 700 jobseekers who attended The business feedback has been positive. The quality of applicants was good, with a high probability that much of our recruitment can be completed from the applications at the Jobs Fair (Frankie & Benny s)
