Induction Requirements Newly Hired Teacher w/prior Experience Newly Hired Teacher w/prior Experience st Year 2d Year st Year 2d Year 3d Year Days of Orientation 4 days 0 4 days 0 0 Induction Hours Up to 30 Up to 5 Up to 30 Up to 5 Up to 5 Newly hired teachers with prior experience are teachers who have two (2) or more complete years of recent teaching experience. 2 teachers are teachers who have less than two complete years of recent teaching experience or teachers who have not taught in the last two years. How do I know what classes are required for induction? Induction classes are a contractual requirement. All the information that you need is on the District website. Go to click on Departments and then on Professional Development. You will then click on Induction and that will take you to the Induction page. All induction/professional development: topics (aligned to the Danielson model), dates, and times will be on the page. You will also receive this plus other information that you may need for your monthly induction sessions from your principal. If you have not received this information, and you are a st - or 2d-year teacher, or a 3d-year novice teacher, please contact your principal.
Do I earn CPDU s for induction? Yes, but it is very important for you to sign in when you attend the classes and complete an evaluation form for that class. There will be one CPDU form given out at the end of the year which will include all completed. We track your attendance throughout the year to be sure you have completed all sessions. You will not receive credit unless you have completed all sessions. It is also important that you follow the ISBE requirements of recording professional development activities. *Special Education Teachers and *Special Certified Staff Are the induction classes for Special Education teachers and Special Certified staff the same as for regular-education teachers? Yes. You are required to complete the number of induction specified for your level (first year, second year, third year). *Special Ed may have different classes specific to their subject areas (Ex. Social Workers, Multi-Needs, LBS, Speech Language Pathologists, Certified Nurses; etc.), but classes are revised from the Induction topics and follow the Danielson Domains. NOTE: Behavior Analysts will be included in Induction Days and Induction monthly sessions specific to their profession. 2
Part-time Teachers If I m a part-time teacher, am I required to take induction classes? Part-time teachers (.5 and below) are not required to attend induction classes; please confer with your principal. Part-time teachers (.6 and above) are required to take induction classes. Part-time teachers should notify Nancy Ziech, Coordinator for Curriculum and Instruction, if they decide to attend classes. If a part-time teacher takes induction classes, s/he will receive credit for completed classes. Late Hires I was hired after the start of the school year. When do I take my induction classes? If you are a late hire, you will complete the remaining monthly induction sessions for the current school year. Missed induction will be made up the following school year. 3
FMLA How does FMLA affect completing induction requirements? While on FMLA, you are not permitted to participate in any school-related activities as an employee. Upon returning from FMLA, discuss options for completing induction sessions with your principal. If you have any additional questions, please discuss them with your principal. Workshops and Graduate Classes Do in-house/out-of-school workshops or graduate classes count toward my required induction? In-house/out-of-school workshops or graduate classes DO NOT count toward required induction, and professional growth cannot be substituted for induction. I have a graduate-level class that conflicts with the scheduled induction classes. What should I do? Induction classes are contractually required. A suggestion would be to discuss the situation with your professor. Typically professors are understanding and allow for evening work commitments. If you cannot get out of the graduate-level class, you will need to discuss with your principal when to make-up the induction class. 4
What happens if I m late to an induction class; if I have to leave early; or if there is an emergency? You must contact your principal and Nancy Ziech (nziech@psd202.org) if you are going to be late or have to leave early because you may be required to make up the class. It is understood that emergencies do occur and sometimes missing a class is unavoidable. However, if you do miss a workshop because of an emergency, it is important for you to notify Nancy Ziech, or send an to nziech@psd202.org. You and your principal will schedule a make-up class.
