2 CALEA Statement of Existence Improve the delivery of public safety services, primarily through public safety accreditation programs organized, and maintained in the public interest.

3 Benefits of CALEA Accreditation CALEA Accreditation requires an agency to develop a comprehensive, well thought out, uniform set of written directives. This is one of the most successful methods for reaching administrative and operational goals, while also providing direction to personnel. CALEA Accreditation strengthens an agency's accountability, both within the agency and the community, through a continuum of standards that clearly define authority, performance, and responsibilities. Being CALEA Accredited can limit an agency's liability risk exposure because it demonstrates that internationally recognized standards have been met, as verified by a team of independent outside CALEA-trained Assessors.

Bring in subject matter experts. 6. Visit other accredited agencies. 7. Sell it up the chain. 8. Work as a team. 9. Get a great mock assessor. 10. Accreditation is your world.

7 1. Assess what you actually have to do. There are a lot of standards, but some don't apply to your agency at all. Put those as N/A. If you are doing your assessment in PowerDMS, make sure that your "to do" actually reflects what you need to do.

8 2. Have a plan. One of the main reasons I have seen agencies struggle is due to a lack of a good accred or re-accred plan. Create a reverse calendar. Define your target date. Work backwards from there. When are you seeking your award? Then, when will my onsite be? Mock needs to be 4 6 months before onsite.

9 3. You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time. Try not to get overwhelmed with the big picture. Take your assessment one standard at a time, stay organized, and you will get it done.

10 4. Use your due dates to your advantage. Don't set everything up so that you have it due on January 1 st. If you are adding proofs for each year, spread the work out throughout the calendar. Use different months so that you only get a few items a week, rather than overwhelming yourself.

12 5. Bring in subject matter experts. If you can, have people in their areas of expertise send attachments to you, or upload them into your assessment in PowerDMS. Try not to take it all on, you are managing the process.

13 6. Visit other accredited agencies. Join a PAC and access the PAC forums. Go on mocks as an observer. Align yourself with other accredited agencies.

14 7. Sell it up the chain of command. You have the timeframe outlines and subject-matter experts outlined. Now get the support you need!

15 8. Work as a team. If you are fortunate enough to have team members helping you, don't be afraid to have them take on a chapter or two.

16 9. Get a great mock assessor. When you are fairly certain you have your ducks in a row, find a Mock Assessor who has the expertise to take a look at your work and give you areas of improvement that might help ease the process of gaining accreditation. You know your timeframe for your mock assessment, reach out to them well in advance to schedule.

17 10. Accreditation is your world. Bring light to how what you do impacts the organization and solves problem that are outside of attaining and maintaining CALEA accreditation. Lack internal 'systems' designed to facilitate compliance causes turmoil.

19 Not Top Use the language during an interview, "I know what our policy says but what we really do is..." 2. Recommend the Flea Bag Hotel for the assessment team to stay in. 3. Attach a 30 minute video when you only want the assessor to view 30 seconds. 4. Volunteer your assessor to wear the bite sleeve during a K9 demonstration. 5. Don't ask your PAC for suggestions on best ways to hide a body. 6. Let the agency head take vacation during the onsite. 7. "Accidentally" forget and leave the assessment team in the conference room at night and leave the agency. 8. Wait until the last minute to get started. 9. Find your doppelganger, offer them to switch places, and skip town the day before your onsite. 10. Violate your use of force policy in an effort to get people to send you proofs.
