3 Introduction According to Papakostas et al (2010) airlines must be programmed to address four aspects: preparation of the schedule, in which companies identify a route list considering points of departure and arrival; the fleet assignment, which aims to identify the aircrafttype that will operate on a particular route; the routing area, which define the geographical operation area; the reduce of interruptions, that aims to respond all operational disruptions due to weather, equipment failures or malfunctions that may occur during daily operations. the reduce of interruptions, that aims to respond all operational disruptions due to weather, equipment failures or malfunctions that may occur during daily operations. 3

4 Introduction (cont.) Maintenance activities can be performed: "in house" by the operating company (MRO), can be outsourced. Depending on the conditions of the airline, its available labor force, infrastructure hangar and business scope, etc., the company may choose to perform maintenance activities partially outsourced, especially those activities that need more structure or specialization. 4

The tasks to be performed in house or outsourced vary from company to company, but in both the tasks management need to keep the aircraft available to fly for the longest period of time possible, at the lowest cost, given the security matters and in accordance with the regulatory standards. 5

6 Question Research What is the status of Brazilian aeronautics maintenance companies with regard to management practices? 6

7 Objective Analyze the management practices of Brazilian aircraft repair stations. 7

8 Data Collection A questionnaire, that was prepared based on a review of literature and on the practices of aircraft maintenance activity. The target population of the survey was companies that develop aircraft maintenance activities in Brazil and have registration with the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC). 8

9 Data Collection and Analysis We analyzed seven sets of questions that are : Legal Requirements; Planning e Programming; Information Management; Maintenance Resources; Support and Control; Safety; Human Resources. 9

10 Findings Legal Requirements Companies consider important and show commitment to the application of existing standards, although they are checked conflict between these rules. Such conflicts were mentioned by 34% of companies and may hinder the application of the standard and therefore the standardization of work practices. 10

11 Fidings Planning e Programming Companies respondents still indicated as practice to use the Service Orders as a way to manage the activities to be performed. Moreover, these companies also have a history of activities of these service orders, indicating that the control of orders is also a widespread practice in this market. 11

12 Fidings Information Management Although the use of information systems has gained more prominence in recent years in the industry and their use is widespread, 8% of respondent companies did not have an information system. 12

13 Fidings Maintenance Resources Mostly companies show partial agreement regarding the availability of these items, and in 11% of the spare parts are not available whenever they are needed and 12% do not use control inventory turnover. 13

14 Fidings Support and Control Although companies claim that the evaluation of suppliers is important, 20% of companies say they do not maintain control over the identification and selection of suppliers in the workshop, thus, this identification is not yet a practice adopted unanimously, but its importance is recognized. 14

15 Fidings Safety It is observed that in some cases companies report not having absolute control of safety items (see Q46, where 20% of companies report that the inspection stamps do not receive control about their use). 15

16 Fidings Human Resources Interestingly, although companies see the training and qualification of their employees a common practice (54% strongly agree and 42% somewhat agree) and planning practice is structured this training, only 8% of them perform planning its replacement professionals over time. 16

17 Conclusions The non-uniformity of procedures between companies demonstrates that there is opportunity for improvement in the standards. In this sense, the results obtained in this study may assist in the review and improvement of existing standards, incorporating some of these practices considered effective by the sector and also standardizing these practices, with corrections when appropriate. 17
