IMPLEMENTATION OF 5S TO ENHANCE QUALITY FOR PRACTICAL EXCELLENCE OF LABORATORY (A CASE STUDY AT SURVEYING LABORATORY, INTEGRAL UNIVERSITY CAMPUS SHAHJAHANPUR) M.Wasi Baig 1, Imran Husain 2, Shahbaz Ahmad 3 1 Assistant Professor & In-Charge, 2,3 Lecturer, Department of Civil Engineering, Integral University Campus Shahjahanpur (India) ABSTRACT Standardizing our laboratories through 5S can give huge benefits with regards to efficiency and lead time reduction. We need to look at producing standards operating procedures for this process. Every laboratoryhas office instruction but these are more often than not organized in a departmental manner, not by the actual process such as theoretical order into the practical aspects. Real gain can be made if we map out the process in question and remove all of the wasteful steps. Hence, in this paper we are looking towards our process as in 5S. Key words: 5S, ACSM, TQC, JIT, TPM, GPS Aim and objective of this paper:- To guide people towards housekeeping To motivate academicians towards 5S To findbest opportunity for identification of instrument/apparatus/file etc. To create awareness about 5S in laboratories. To promote 1 st class work place. To create awareness towards safety I. INTRODUCTION Housekeeping and workplace organization should be among the first steps to improve organization image. By practicing the principle of a place for everything, and everything in its place, a sense of standardized operations will be developed. Management by exception will be easily practiced. Furthermore, people who take pride in their workplace will be more likely to produce high quality products and services. 1.1 Housekeeping Improvements One of the easiest ways to determine a company s/organization/institution attitude toward improvement activities is to simply walk around the said place and review the housekeeping practices on the shop floor. 1 P a g e
Of course, housekeeping practices reflect management s general attitude towards work. One can judge the level of improvement activities from the way tools are stored, chips from machines handled, work tables organized, inspection points indicated, factory floors swept, machines cleaned, personal items stored, and so on. Housekeeping is everybody s job S for Good Housekeeping Practices:-The Japanese Way:- In Japan, 5S which stands for good housekeeping concepts is considered the basis for continuous productivity and quality improvements. It is believed that good housekeeping and work place organization are directly linked to achieving discipline in manufacturing. A general attitude of cooperation should be established so that people are willing to practice good housekeeping not only in their own area, but also to help in other areas. 1.3 The 3 Different Types of Workplaces A 3 rd class workplace: With people throwing rubbish around but none to clean up. A 2 rd class workplace: With people throwing rubbish around and another group of people cleaning up. A 1 st class workplace: Without anybody throwing any rubbish around, and yet everybody is cleaning up. 1.4 Everybody is clean-up to maintain 1 st class work place;- 1.5 Importance of 5S A clean workplace has high Quality A clean workplace keeps Cost down A clean workplace ensures Delivery on time A clean workplace is high in Productivity A clean workplace is Safe for people to work A clean workplace is high in Morale 2 P a g e
1.6 What is 5S? 5S is a systematic approach towards Continuous Improvement and good housekeeping. Good Housekeeping means neat and clean work place. Good housekeeping is for Safety, Productivity, Product Quality, Customer satisfaction and subsequently for prosperity. This is a Continuous Process for which my Personal involvement and commitment is essential. There are 5 steps: Original 5S Meaning in English Japanese 1S Seiri Sort out unnecessary items in the workplace and discard them 2S 3S Seiton Seiso Arranging necessary items in good order (systematic) so that they can be easily picked for use - A place for everything - Everything in its place Clean your workplace completely so that there is no dust on floor, machines and equipments. 4S Seiketsu Maintain high standard of housekeeping and workplace organization at all times. 5S Shitsuke Train people to follow good housekeeping disciplines autonomously. 5S was created in the Japanese manufacturing environment and literally stands for 5 Japanese words which begin with S: Seiri, Seiton, Seison, Seiketsu, Shitsuke When translated together mean a cleaning activity at a workplace. Aforementioned, 5S is an integral step towards Kaizen and Lean-site Manufacturing with the primary goal of being able to supply the customer (internal, external) with the right product at the right time in the correct quantities S Provides a Solid Foundation for Advanced Improvement Activities Successful implementation of 5S will be itself bringing about various tangible results. It also is a necessary step for a company to go through before implementing advanced Management techniquessuch as TQC, JIT and TPM, because 5S will build up a solid foundation for an organization by welldisciplined people through Shitsuke. II. INTRODUCTION TO SURVEYING According to ACSM(American society on surveying and Mapping),surveying is a science and art of making all essential measurement to determine the relative position of points or physical and cultural details above on beneath the surface of the earth, and to depict them in a usable form, or to establish the position of points or details. 3 P a g e
In others words, Surveying is a Technique, profession and science of determining the terrestrial or threedimensional position of points and distance and angles between them. For being a good surveyor knowledge of Mathematics (Geometry and Trignometry,Physics, basic Engineering and law is necessary. Now a days common survey instruments are theodolite, steel band, total station level, rod and surveying GPS system. Following is a list of apparatus available at our polytechnic. S.N Name of Instruments Quantity 1 Dumpy Level with Tripod Stand Auto Level with Tripod Stand Tilting Level with Tripod Stand Transit Theodolite With Tripod Stand Plane Table Board with Tripod Stand 20 6 Plane Table Accessories Box (Including Plumbing Fork, Plumb 20 Bob, Direction Compass, Simple Alidade, Spirit Level) 7 Telescopic Alidade Surveyor Compass with Stand Prismatic Compass with Stand Magnetic Compass with Stand Abney s Level with Stand Folding Staff (4mt) Ranging Rod (2mt) Ranging Rod (3mt) Arrow Measuring Tape (30 mt) Measuring Tape (50 mt) Measuring Tape (100 mt) Ranging Rod with jointer (3mt) Electronic Plan meter 01 III. IMPLEMENTATION OF 5S IN SURVEYING LABORATORIES After adopting 5S system in our surveying laboratories, we are realizing that our workflow, safety and efficiency improved.we try our best toimplement 5S in survey lab to enhance the quality of our lab. The shine is relatively easy when everything is kept in place. We divide up the spaces among the students and assign a person to be responsible for maintaining each area. The key to keeping 5S from falling apart a system of daily inspection and weakly audits. The labs should look identical at the beginning and end of the day. We have reusable laminated inspection sheets with 10 items to look for ranging from floor cleanliness to paper documentation. 4 P a g e
Laboratory instructor is responsible for performing an inspection of their assigned area at day s end.each item on the sheet gets a score of 0-10.so that people can improve upon the deficiencies and persistent problems can be identified. our view inspection is a part of Kaizen continuous improvement-efforts of the laboratory. The weekly audit are performed by someone in the group who doesn t work in the lab, which may help identify problems, but the main tool for continuous improvement is the implementation sheets. Followingphotograph show that implementation of 5S can be improve workability, efficiency and safety in said laboratory. IV. CONCLUSION Standardize our surveying lab through 5S can give huge benefits with regards to efficiency and lead time reduction.simple through such as colors coding as files and documents stream can make real gains. we are not saying that adopting for surveying labs will drastically boost overall quality but base on our own experience but,we are guessing,we can save several hours through better laboratory organize and cleanness or implementation of 5S.
