PREPARE FOR APPRAISAL: DEEP DIVES MOA Audits will get you many of the CMMI artifacts; still going to need to identify additional artifacts (e.g., correspondence, corrective action examples, screenshots, document extracts) Schedule deep dives with PM, project mentor, and other team members, as appropriate Opportunity to build the CMMI PIID spreadsheet collaboratively Especially important for services projects or projects with hybrid company/customer defined process Makes projects feel bought-in and contributing to CMMI initiative

PLAN THE APPRAISAL: GOING STRAIGHT TO SCAMPI A, SKIP THE B Make a risk based decision to skip a SCAMPI B if: Have internal expertise (e.g., Lead Appraiser on staff) Repeat appraisal (similar scope, process usage, sampling) Schedule constraints (need to be appraised soon) Or other factor that causes risk for failure to be low. Talk to your Lead Appraiser about the use of the appraisal fix-it process, i.e., Action Plan Re-Appraisal (APR) A

CONDUCT THE APPRAISAL: VARIOUS WAYS TO STAY ON SCHEDULE AND SUCCEED Prepare It - - provide hardcopy of documents used extensively (e.g., PMP, schedule, training records) Present It - - conduct project presentations that address not just characteristics of the project (e.g., customer, project type, POP, key milestones / deliverables), but also include affirmations for project documents, tools, repositories, terminology Find It / Describe It - - project mentors act as a Phone A Friend for appraisal team members who need to identify artifacts or obtain affirmations Demo It - - work with the Lead Appraiser to schedule demonstrations of essential tools and projects; this can serve both as artifact and affirmation. Especially helpful for tools that encapsulate the process (e.g., Agile tools)
