1 Chapter 1 Human s for the IT Professionals The process of managing, hiring, and (unfortunately) firing of employees is important to the success of a smooth running IT organization. To help make this process easier, we have developed a set of management tools and guidelines to assist with these management and human resource processes. Team development is also a very important part of managing an IT organization and we have included a section on developing a high performance development team.

4 Human s for the IT Professionals Job Postings The first step is finding the right employees for your IT organization. While this will vary based on the type of person you are looking to hire, we have included a template of a "Job Posting" advertisement. The skills and duties that are required for this position are tied back to the Roles and Responsibilities resource located in the Management subfolder of s. 5 Personal Interviewing Personal Interviewing Interviewing prospective employees is one of the toughest jobs. There are several things you need to ask, but there are certain questions that you can not ask. However, we have created a series of questions that we ask all our prospective employees to determine where they fit into our organization. We have created a standard letter that shows you how you might want to structure this offer. EmpOfferLetter.docx Standard letter to be sent to a potential new hire. New Hire Checklist Before the employee starts, and the day the employee starts work, there are certain items that must be done to prepare for their arrival. Here is a sample checklist of the things that must be accomplished during this time. PDSA Agile ALM 1-5

Employee Performance Review Once a year (or maybe twice a year) you will want to sit down with each employee and discuss their performance. This review should use some sort of rating schedule to give the employee a feel for how they are doing within the company. The criteria you use on the performance review should map up to the Employee Roles & Responsibilities so they (and you) can gauge how they are performing their duties. 7 Employee Handbook Employee Handbook Every company should have an employee handbook that is given to new employees. These handbooks needs to cover applicable laws for your state, talk about vacation pay, sick pay, leaves of absences, termination policy and many other mandatory items. Employee Termination If you must terminate an employee, you need to have two people in the room besides the employee just to have a witness that everything was done correctly and according to procedure. In addition you should have a letter created that all parties sign and that state the exit procedures such as severance pay, 401k distributions, etc. EmpTerminationLetter.docx Standard letter of termination.
