Characteristics of the Post WWII American Corporate Landscape (Industrial Economy) More leverage Less government Domestic focus Less complex Low technology Low risk Characteristics of the New Normal (Knowledge Economy) Less leverage More government Global focus More complex High technology High risk Before the financial crisis 1950 to 2008 After the financial crisis 2008 to?? 4

Knowledge is the most valuable real asset an organization can use to innovate and improve its performance. While physical resources are finite and depletable, knowledge grows as it is used and provides a sustainable source of competitive advantage. (Smith & Webster, 2000, p. 139) 6
The concept of a Knowledge Based Economy (KBE) is the guiding principle for economic development policy across the world: Knowledge Industries: High tech manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, aerospace and other knowledge intensive services i.e. financial services, higher ed. Knowledge Workers: Those with degrees or in the top three occupational codes. Knowledge Assets: Investment in R&D. Knowledge Services: Value/volume of trade in knowledge industries. Economic growth based on investment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), the development of information and communication technologies, economic globalization, increasing numbers of well-educated workers and customers, and the development of entirely new hi-tech sectors and industries (James, Guile & Unwin, 2011, p. 5). 7
Industrial Economy Skills Physical strength Process driven Known parameters Simple systems Coordinate one organization Single discipline Knowledge Economy Skills Advanced knowledge Service driven Ambiguous Highly complex systems Coordinate multiple organizations Multiple disciplines *Transitional Skills Gap* 8
Traditional Learn in school Learn on the job Advance to comfort zone Stop learning Retire Die Learn in school Learn on the job Learn online New Normal Learn in a community of practice Life long learning Growth and contribution through Volunteering and mentoring It s a life long journey done in collaboration with others! 9
Government response to close transitional skills gap: Increase the number of economic and educational policies designed to encourage partnerships between Higher Ed and Business to maximize the knowledge creation and transfer between the two components. Innovation and growth Provide tax incentives and grant funding to organizations and research initiatives that support volunteerism, mentorships and internships particularly in STEM and creative arts. Moving aging Americans away from traditional isolated, sedentary lifestyles towards new social, active lifestyles based on getting out and volunteering! i.e. Habitat for Humanity. 10
Rodell s 2010 study finds: Employees will volunteer for meaningful volunteer tasks as an effort to compensate for non-meaningful regular employment tasks (p. 8). Volunteering had a positive indirect effect on job performance (specifically, citizenship and counterproductive behaviors) by increasing employee identification with the employer (p. 9). Employer encouragement did exhibit a positive indirect effect on employee job performance by fostering employer identification (p.9). Employees who volunteer more frequently benefited personally in terms of increased self-esteem and life satisfaction (p. 9). 11
Gottlieb & Gillespie s 2008 study finds: Older adult volunteers may enjoy good health and longevity because being useful to others instills a sense of being needed and valued (p.399). Compared to older non-volunteers, older volunteers experience less depressive symptomatology, lower utilization of health services, and greater life satisfaction (p. 401). Older adults who volunteered for at least 100 hours per year were significantly less likely to report poor health and limitations in daily living; two years later, these older adult volunteers had a significantly lower mortality rate than non-volunteers and volunteers who invested less than 100 hours per year (p. 401). 12
