2 1 AIM OF THIS MODULE To develop, apply and share management skills incorporating experiences from previous employment with other members of the group and, as a result, analyse the applicability of various techniques to the rail industry. Techniques covered: project management, health and safety, asset stewardship and current industry performance and management techniques. 2 BY ENGAGING SUCCESSFULLY WITH THIS MODULE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO LO1 - reflect on existing project management experience, investigate current techniques and apply to Network Rail major projects. LO2 - review H&S legislation, appraise the implications on management of railway works and critically appraise current working methods. LO3 - formulate ideas to maintain asset stewardship, including obsolescence and new technology, and to compare and contrast against systems in existence in Network Rail. LO4 - to demonstrate an appreciation of, and ability to apply, current performance and management techniques in the railway environment. 3 THESE ARE EXAMPLES OF THE CONTENT OF THE MODULE Project Management Project management applicability and project life cycle. Schedules of work. Focus on achievement with controlling and monitoring discipline. Communications and teamwork in projects. Network Rail specific project management. Health and Safety Health and Safety the legislation. CDM and the renewals environment. Rail Safety and Standards Board. The responsibility of the individual. The engineer as a manager of Health and Safety. Asset Stewardship Review of assets and liabilities operated by NR. Costs of maintenance and renewals. Structured approach to asset review.
3 Asset stewardship and monitoring for input to maintenance and renewals functions. Computer based methods for managing the storage and supply of information. Managing obsolescence and future technology. Quality management Objective setting. Business case and management; stakeholder risk identification and management. Systems and interface management. Data collection and handling. Data driven decision making. Solution resolution. Managing technology 4 THESE ARE THE MAIN WAYS YOU WILL BE SUPPORTED IN YOUR LEARNING TO ACHIEVE THESE OUTCOMES Knowledge gained during your previous employment will be of use here, as will knowledge gained during the other modules of the course, and especially during the work placement periods. The type of assessment exercise used will require you critically to reflect upon some aspect of current practice in Network Rail, as you have observed it, to compare it with practices you may have encountered elsewhere, and consequently to draw conclusions about how NR may be able to improve in future. Therefore, everything you encounter during the course is potentially of use in supporting your work for this module. You will also have already produced four or five reflective reports by the time you write the assignment for this module, so you should take into account the feedback on those when preparing to undertake the assignment task in this module. 5 THESE ARE THE WAYS THAT WILL BE USED TO ENABLE YOU TO DEMONSTRATE YOU HAVE MET THE LEARNING OUTCOMES All learning outcomes: You will write an engineering management paper, typically discussing your existing experience, new techniques learnt, appraisal of application to the rail industry, performance management including working arrangements, and potential recommendations for improvement in working practices. It will contain four subsections: Project Management Health and Safety Asset Stewardship including obsolescence and new technology Performance Management
4 The paper will be awarded a percentage mark which provides the mark for the module. You will be expected to have developed sufficiently during the course to be able to emphasise your own experiences and present the work as an easily understandable piece of writing. Assessment criteria: Railway Engineering Management Paper Mark Range 70% Distinction 40-69% Pass Extensive analysis of a Good review and mixture of techniques analysis of existing drawing on a wide range of experience, plus experiences. Well thought application of out application to the rail taught techniques industry with workable and new methods recommendations. to the rail industry.
