4 More than one way to Maintain Safety Practices This presentation is about our process. Not saying it is the right process but it s the process that is right for us. Each company needs to figure what works for them How employees will respond What will get them engaged in the process. Everyone has to believe and buy in All it takes is one detractor for things to get out of control 4
5 For Example How to I get my message across to this room. Is it the same way I would get my message across to our work crews? You have to be able to adapt to your environment. 5

Safety is a Core Value of the company Employee Involvement is key to success Employee s shall be Accountable Open Lines of Communication Focus on Today Job Hazard Analyses for all Activities. Project On-Site Meeting Daily Pre-Task Planning Adopting the Don t Walk By approach Essentially all employees have a voice and are encouraged to use it.

8 Project Bid and Award Some Bids require a Safety Plan as part of the Bid. Specs need to reviewed by the project team to ensure all safety requirements are captured in the plan. Bond has two HASP templates. One for Building and one for Utility. This is our starting point. Templates were reviewed and edited through a safety committee process in Several members of each division, office and field personnel worked together to achieve. Internal Risk Assessment High Level JHA performed during the bid process. Review Exposures 8
9 After Award Internal Kick Off Meeting This is where we review the safety requirements with the project team. (This meeting is not just for safety but all aspects of work and all branches of the company participate.) Review Scope of Work Schedule Review Roles and Responsibilities Assign Safety Personnel (sometimes we have to identify in the bid) Competent Person Review Training Requirements Electrical Hazard Awareness Assign Work Force General Superintendent and Operations Set Up Autodesk and define use parameters. Assign Administrator Does a specific safety checklist need to be developed for this project or do we have one that fits? 9
10 Field Meeting and Review After the internal kick off meeting the project team meets to complete the HASP. Project Manager Project Superintendent Safety Manager Safety Director General Superintendent This is where we fine tune the Safety Plan. JHA is completed in detail for all aspects of work. Emergency procedures and call sheets are developed. 811 is called in. Traffic Management Plans. Identify Qualified Electrical Worker Training schedule developed if needed. 10
11 Finished HASP How we control the hazards shall be clearly identified and clearly communicated in the HASP. Controlling the hazard includes the following; 1. Elimination of the hazard 2. Engineering controls 3. Administrative controls 4. Personal Protective Equipment 5. Training of employees This information needs to be in the JHA and Pre Task THE HASP will spell this out. 11
12 Review Review Does the HASP and JHA cover all work activities? Does it address all hazards? Did we miss an Activity or Exposure? Did something change? What do we do? HASP is a working document. Its not a one and done sort of thing. Needs to be edited as things change. Project Orientation, Review and Sign off. Imperative everyone understands the requirements including their roles and responsibilities as outlined in the HASP. 12
13 When the work begins Educate and train the work force on not just the process but the project. Focus on Today. Take stock in the workforce Don t gloss over routine tasks Avoid Complacency 13
14 Benefits of the JHA Identifies unsafe work practices before an accident occurs Decreases injury rates Increases quality Increases productivity 14
15 Changing the Mindset These things happen, Right? WRONG We can not have this attitude. If we don t review and hold everyone accountable, then we are sending the wrong message that these incidents are ok. Everything is preventable if planned properly.~ 15
16 Focusing on Today What is it? Its a daunting task to go incident free for an entire year. But what about breaking that down to each shift, each crew, and just worrying about today. Can we go incident free? Every employee on the job will participate This meeting focuses on the hazards of today, and today only What steps need to be taken today to complete the job safely? What equipment and materials do I need to complete the job safely? Keeping the crew focused on today will result in a safer more productive operation

19 Near miss vs. serious injury Why do we investigate a near miss? What are we investigating when someone gets injured? All too often the near miss goes overlooked and the circumstances and situations remain the same for someone to get hurt. We emphasize the act and not the end result. That s what needs to be looked into. Not because someone was injured. Usually the differences between the act and whether someone was injured is just luck. 19

We are used to things being a certain way each time and unless the obvious comes right out and hits us... we can be oblivious to it all. This is state of mind can affect many things such as productivity, quality and safety. 29
