2 Agenda Day One, Tuesday, December 5, 2017 Session A: 9:00 a.m. 9:15 a.m. Chair s Welcome Session B: 9:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. Opening Conversation - Where are you from? Interrogating Identity and Inclusion. Many conversations begin with the conventional enquiry where are you from?. Seen by many as a polite icebreaker, even this simple traditional question is not devoid of bias and even prejudice. Many feel that this question challenges their legitimacy, their status as an equal member of a community. This opening conversation will reclaim this simple question and use it as a starting point for an exploration of identity. George Walker will discuss his origins his experience of identity and what this means to him and so reveal the shortcomings of many of the categories we like to use in D&I and present a more complex notion of the point where we all begin our D&I journey. He will then invite the audience to discuss this issue. This conversation will inform much of the discussion that follows and will be picked up in the other two conversations that will frame this event, encapsulated in the related questions of Where are we now? and Where are we going? George Walker, Director, Diversity and Inclusion, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Refreshment Break: 10:15 a.m. 10:30 a.m. Session C: 10:30 a.m. 11:15 a.m. Women, Minorities & STEM Exploring How to Break Down Barriers for Technical Careers Like many high technology organizations that hire STEM talent, NASA s Jet Propulsion Lab, struggles with the supply and demand of female and diverse talent. This is especially true in the fields of engineering and software and how to ensure that women and minorities in these fields feel included, heard and supported. Join Michelle Roth as she shares JPL s journey to understand this issue via understanding the supply and demand of technical talent and how to work with this data to tell a story to leaders and utilize it as way to develop an approach that will resonate with a highly technical workforce. Michelle Roth, Head, Talent Management, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory In this session Grant will discuss how he was able to kick start D&I and make significant progress in a relatively short length of time. While much of this progress is no doubt due to his own passion and can-do attitude he will focus his story on the value that allies within and without the organization and the role they played in helping him achieve more than expected. The message is clear and timely working together needs to be a priority for everyone wanting to build more inclusive workplaces. Many organizations are now applying it to employee experience as they seek to deepen the engagement of their employees. This session will explore the approach and how it might help support D&I initiatives as such it very much ties in with the conference opening that examined the lived experience of diversity. Carrie Sawyer, Inclusion and Diversity Manager, Qualcomm Session F: 1:45 p.m. 2:45 p.m. Using Analytics to Assess and Advance Inclusion Almost since the beginning, D&I practitioners have argued that increasing diversity leads to improved business results. And for many this belief remains axiomatic. But as organizations become increasingly quantified so D&I practitioners need to develop more sophisticated approaches to understanding the impact of their practice on the business. And they need to think creatively about how an analytical approach can inform D&I decision making. In this session two leading analytics experts will explore this evolution through examples from their organizations where they have used analytics to measure the impact or support D&I initiatives. The results were not always what was expected, and part of the message will be to increasingly make D&I decisions based on solid evidence and for D&I practitioners to see the increasing use of data and analytics as an opportunity to demonstrate the value they bring to the business and advance the cause of inclusion. Addressing Some of D&I s Most Wicked Challenges We began the day with an exploration of origins of the life experiences that have influenced our identity and our way of being in the world. This closing session of the day will look at the now at the wicked problems some D&I practitioners face questions of religion and race, political correctness and points of view, of making sure D&I is for everyone. Session J: 9:00 a.m. 9:45 a.m. Divergent Views/Common Ground: Leadership Perspectives of C-Suite and Millennial Leaders Millennials are moving into the C-suite at Fortune 500 companies as boomers retire and the pool of Gen X leaders struggles to fill demand. Some argue this next generation is distinctive, that they will lead differently and that they should be developed differently than leaders of the past. Driven by brand new research on Millennial leadership based on work with CEOs and their leadership teams at 14 companies including Johnson & Johnson, Xerox, Boeing, American Express, KPMG, UPS, Aetna, TIAA, Cardinal Health and Verizon, this keynote presentation looks at data to begin to answer these questions about Millennial leadership including: What leadership skills matter? Will future CEOs be different? Will corporate imperatives shirt? How engaged are Millennial leaders? How do Millennial leaders grow? How can organizations best develop this next generation of leadership? At the same time, it has been established that the quality of leadership also has a big impact on an organization s ability to innovate. And few areas play as big a role in an organization s success as innovation. Intel has innovation at its core as it has stayed at the forefront of the rapidly growing and changing IT industry since the first PC s began transforming our world and workplace. In this session Joseph Nsengimana will share the role D&I has played in leadership and innovation and so helped sustain Intel s success.
