1 UNIVERSITY OF MARY Gary Tharaldson School of Business BUS Collective Bargaining and Labor Relations Prefix/Course No. BUS 618 Credit Hours 3 Course Title Collective Bargaining and Labor Course Format Online, Onsite, and Relations Blended Course Description: The overall intent of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to Collective Bargaining and Labor Relations competencies and demonstrate how to successfully apply this knowledge. 3 credit hours. This course has been developed based on the human resources body of knowledge defined by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI), an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The Institute suggests that HR practitioners have exposure to and an understanding of the areas of Management Practices, General Employment Practices, Staffing, Human Resource Development, Compensation and Benefits, Employee and Labor Relations, and Health, Safety and Security. This course also incorporates "Competencies for the New HR," developed by Wayne Brockbank and Dave Ulrich, University of Michigan Business School. This is a difficult and challenging graduate course and expectations are high. Relationship of the Course to the Program of Study/Pre-requisites/Co-requisites/Other Relevant Information Relationship to the University of Mary Servant Leadership Experience University of Mary Mission Statement: The University of Mary exists to serve the religious, academic, and cultural needs of people in this region and beyond. It takes its tone from the commitment of the Sisters of Annunciation Monastery. These Sisters founded the University and continue to sponsor it today. It is Christian, it is Catholic, and it is Benedictine. Relationship of this Course to the Program of Study: Since University of Mary is a SHRM College/University Partner and HRCI approved provider, this course has been designed to meet or exceed all SHRM and HRCI requirements and outcomes and is evaluated each year for content, rigor and up-todate content. HR track students will find the textbook and subjects covered in this course will help them prepare for the professional exams in order to become PHR, SPHR, or GPHR certified by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). Servant Leadership Experience: Servant leadership experiences are based on character building relationships integrated with a solid understanding of what it is to be a servant leader with Jesus Christ as model and the Benedictine values of community, hospitality, moderation, prayer, respect for persons, and service. These values are foundational in character building, ethical decision making, and the integration of the intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects of life. Relationship of the course to servant leadership: Professional Competence Practice expectations set forth by profession of business in strategic decision making. Demonstrate excellent in developing and presenting substantive, well-articulated project of appropriate scope and professionalism. Environmental Contexts Collaborate with a team to integrate academic and professional experience for solving a problem. Administer a needs assessment. Interpret research from diverse sources to distinguish relevant and credible information and to obtain a more global perspective. Scholarship Analyze existing evidence of business best practices. Generate a strategic plan including substantiated evidence, gathered data, examples of supporting information and thorough explanations. Discuss conclusions, implications, consequences and recommendations considering context, research, data, and organizational analysis. Valuing Role model servant leadership in recognizing and respecting multiple perspectives and diversity. Identify and question validity of analysis, research and assumptions and address ethical considerations of the project or recommendations. Dissemination of New Knowledge Dissemination in written and oral formats shows impeccable grammar, command of the language and gender non-bias. Demonstrate a thorough analysis and evaluation of information and synthesis of that data/information into new knowledge.

2 Demonstrate ability to present work that is clear and logical, professional, containing appropriate background and information, credible sources and appropriate citations at a level that is appropriate for presentation of graduate work. Benedictine Experience: Although communal life inspired by the Rule of St. Benedict stores a vast treasury of Benedictine values, six of these are of particular importance for our life here at the University of Mary... Give yourself frequently to prayer. ] Respect for Persons Recognizing the image of God in each person and honoring each one in their giftedness and limitations [Rule of Benedict 4 Honor everyone and never do to another what you do not want done to yourself. ] Service Meeting the needs of others in the example of Jesus the servant leader [Rule of Benedict 35 The members should serve one another. ] Relationship of the course to the Benedictine values: The content and assessments of BUS 618 aligns with the Benedictine Values in such a way as to provide studentpractitioners the knowledge to ensure ethical and business-centric are made as related to an organization s employees. Students will learn to avoid and react to unethical employment practices in order to create a greater sense of community within their organization. Further, course concepts directly align with the Benedictine Value of Respect for Persons. During employee mediation, it is not only important to respect the other party s bargaining position but also the people from whom this party represents. It is not necessary to agree with another person s position to respect who they are and what they represent. Course Outcomes: Successful completion of this course will enable students to intelligently accomplish and express either orally or in writing the following: Course Outcome Understand the general relationship between organized labor and management. Understand the evolution of labor unions from its historical beginnings to now. Identify the effects of the law on unions and management. Understand the diverse interests within unions and management and their effects on bargaining demands. Identify the important factors relevant to the bargaining procedure and their effects on bargaining. Explain why many articles in a labor agreement, regardless of whether they cover economic or non-economic or noneconomic issues have cost implications. Identify the different components that constitute the total compensation package. Identify and explain some of the factors that employers consider in formulating their financial proposal. Understand the bargaining behavior and procedures that are unethical and considered unfair. Understand the elements of a typical grievance procedure. Identify the differences of public sector and private sector collective bargaining. ISBN: Expectations Since this is an 3 semester credit graduate-level course, you can expect to spend approximately 9 hours per week instructional time and another 18 hours per week studying outside of instructional time. Attendance Policy Your instructor will record attendance and report absences. Attendance is recorded when you login to this course and participate in the discussion question assignment (online) or attend the full weekly course meeting time (onsite). Absences exceeding 1 week may be reported to the Chair of Graduate Education. Unexcused absences of 2 or more weeks will result in withdrawal from the course with a letter grade of "F" recorded. Assignment & Exam Policy/ies Late assignments will be subject to a 10% deduction per day. All assignments must be turned in to receive a grade for the course. The instructor retains the right to reduce the grade for late papers and poor student involvement. Homework, discussion board input, examination &/or quizzes are due by midnight each Sunday ending the session or per specific instructions (collaborative discussion posts).

A student who is found to breach this policy while enrolled in a course will be formally notified by the instructor and the action will be recorded in the student s file. Minimal Plagiarism Inserting verbatim phrases of 2-3 distinctive words Substituting synonyms into the original sentence rather than rewriting the complete sentence Reordering the clauses of a sentence Imitating the sentence, paragraph, or organizational structure, or writing style of a source Using a source s line of logic, thesis or ideas Use situation as an educational opportunity to discuss with the student the nature of plagiarism and the values of a scholarly, Christian community At the professor s discretion, assignments may be rewritten and resubmitted, with or without a grade penalty. Repeated instance of minimal plagiarism may, at the professor s discretion, be treated as substantial plagiarism. If the professor plans to exercise discretion in cases of minimal plagiarism, procedures and consequences should be clearly described in the course syllabus/learner guide. Faculty are encouraged to keep records of all instances (e.g., in the form of a report to the Assistant VP for Academic Affairs) Substantial Plagiarism Inserting verbatim sentences or longer passages from a source Combining paraphrasing with verbatim sentences to create a paragraph or more of text Repeatedly and pervasively engaging in minimal plagiarism First Offense: The student receives a failing grade on the assignment that has been plagiarized and a Faculty Report of Student Plagiarism is submitted to the Assistant VP for Academic Affairs. Second Offense: The student receives a failing grade in the course and a Faculty Report of Student Plagiarism is submitted to the Assistant VP for Academic Affairs. Third Offense: The student is recommended for expulsion from the University. Action is taken at the discretion of the Assistant VP for Academic Affairs. Complete Plagiarism Submitting or presenting someone s complete published or unpublished work (paper, article, or chapter) Submitting another student s work for an assignment, with or without that student s knowledge or consent Using information from a campus file or old assignments Downloading a term paper from a web site Buying a term paper from a mail order company or web site Reusing or modifying a previously submitted paper (e.g., from another course) for a present assignment without obtaining prior approval from the instructor/s involved First Offense: The student receives a failing grade in the course and a report is submitted to the Assistant VP for Academic Affairs within 10 school days.
