Narrative Literature Review 19 published articles, 5 reports Limited body of research descriptive and small qualitative studies no outcomes data Future research - focus on health and wellbeing benefits referred to in National Male Health Policy Need to build evidence base to underpin strengths-based framework of National Male Health Policy 00/00/0000 FILE NAME GOES HERE PAGE 11
International Survey Survey x4 sections: 1) operational structures, 2) info about sheds, 3) info about members and activities, and 4) health and social activities SurveyMonkey distributed by AMSA and by direct contact with shed addresses listed on Irish, NZ, UK and Canadian websites. Survey data collected between April and August, Results: Survey sent to all known operational AMSA sheds (n=757); all known operational international sheds (n=123). AMSA 324 (42.8%) completed the survey in full International 59 (48%) completed the survey in full. 00/00/0000 FILE NAME GOES HERE PAGE 12
International Survey Social Dimensions connecting with marginalised sub-groups Targeted social inclusion of the elderly at international (88.2%; n = 45) and Australian (89.4%; n = 235) was very high. People with mental health problems were next (International: 52.9%; n = 27; Australia: 53.6%; n = 141). International sheds % of sheds (n = 19) specifically targeted the inclusion of PWD. Australian sheds - 29% (n = 94) specifically targeted the inclusion of PWD Strong association between the targeting of PWD and actual shed membership of PWD (χ² = 45.9, df = 1; p < ). 00/00/0000 FILE NAME GOES HERE PAGE 13
International Survey Social Dimensions Sheds are more likely to target PWD, and have significant membership of PWD, if they: provide transport, have regular social outings, and target those with mental health problems. Shed characteristics associated with targeting PWD include: a primary philosophy to develop occupational skills or provide health support; having a mentor program; targeting youth at risk; targeting war veterans (p = ). 00/00/0000 FILE NAME GOES HERE PAGE 14
International Survey Mentoring Dimensions 39.2% (n = 127) of Australian sheds and 23.7% (n = 14) of International sheds undertook formal mentoring. Significantly more Australian sheds had a mentoring program compared with International sheds (Pearson χ² = 5.13; p = 0.023). Youth was the most commonly targeted population both in Australia (60.6%; n = 77) and Internationally (71.4%; n = 10). 00/00/0000 FILE NAME GOES HERE PAGE 15

Case Study of Intergenerational Mentoring Programs at 4 Men s Sheds Key criteria of good programmes Essential Select mentors with strong interpersonal skills Plan a graduation ceremony (or similar) at the end of the program Make certificates for mentees Take the time to set up the program Ensure there is time during the program for interaction between the mentors and mentees Encourage input from the mentees for shared decision making as much as possible Chooses projects that are larger in size or have more power in motivating the mentees Do not underestimate the mentees capacities Adopt educational approaches that focus on problem solving rather than expert teaching approach to program activity Optional Encourage connection with local community (e.g. businesses that can be invited to closing ceremony) Choose mentors with some knowledge in trade type work Choose a program activity as something that the mentees can keep Use one-on-one mentoring 00/00/0000 FILE NAME GOES HERE PAGE 21

Intergenerational Mentoring youth at risk Background context: Many teenage boys who are at risk of social dysfunction often have few, if any, positive male role models Many retired men need to find new occupational meaning MENTORING PROJECT: 9 teenage boys (±15y) participated in a weekly shared construction project with 7 older male mentors at the local men s shed over 1 school term. 32 Aims and Objectives 1. Modify a mentor training program developed in conjunction with the Australian Youth Mentoring Network for use with youth with ID; 2. Test the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of the ID-appropriate innovative intergenerational mentoring program at Men s Sheds; 3. Evaluate the utility of a suite of planned outcome measures for mentees; 4. Evaluate the feasibility of mentors supporting mentees in a volunteer role; and 5. Explore mentees and mentors perceptions of the appropriateness of the program.
Method Older male mentors were trained to provide support to young adults with IDD 10-week intervention; 2 hours per session The mentees (n = 5) were individually paired with two mentors at one of the two Men s Shed on different days. Mentors worked with their mentee on small construction projects such as bread boards and children s toys mentors supported mentees in their social interactions, adapted existing vocational activities, and taught new vocational skills

What did the mentors say? An opportunity.. we [the mentors at the shed] are making the opportunity the opportunity to make mistakes, the opportunity to learn from mistakes, and the opportunity to at least express what he [mentee] thinks it s all to do with confidence and success breeds success it s part of our [shed s] aims and so forth; [that] we will help young people [Mentor 8].
What did the mentors say? just the achievement that we had, and you know, the feedback that we had from the [mentees] I felt that we really achieved something with I enjoyed the experience of endeavouring to encourage them [mentees] to do something which they d not done before it s rewarding to participate and give a little bit back
What did the mentees say? you ve done it by yourself, but with someone s help... so you have achieved something it was a bit perfect It makes me feel like that I am going to hammer nails and I say so that it was fun we were building stuff and learning how to build stuff so that s the two things I ve never done
Enabling Mechanisms Mutual personal growth, engagement and benefit Increased awareness of diversity and individual needs Flexible activities and adaptable support An appropriate activity context
Constraining Mechanisms Outcomes extendable with a longer program Some aspects of research difficult Better planning around identified needs required More targeted support for social interactions important
What s next? Larger study next year based in WA, with a pre-post research design Production of DVD with case studies Future national grant application
