VOLUNTEERING IN IRELAND
WHAT IS VOLUNTEERING? "Volunteering is the commitment of time and energy, for the benefit of society, local communities, individuals outside the immediate family, the environment or other causes. Voluntary activities are undertaken of a person s own free will, without payment. The White Paper Supporting Voluntary Activity (2000)
WHO CAN VOLUNTEER IN IRELAND? Irish Residents & Citizens Migrant workers International students Asylum Seekers Refugees Basically everyone
WHY VOLUNTEER?
Volunteer to GIVE! Your time for something you care about and enjoy. Your skills and expertise to help others and your community. Your energy to make a positive difference/contribution in the society. Something back to your local community. Inspiration to others with your enthusiasm and commitment.
To GET even more An opportunity to do something you love New friends and professional connections Self-confidence and sense of fulfilment Knowledge of Irish and other cultures New skills and work experience References from Irish organisation Language practice Some fun and positive energy!

USEFUL TIPS BEFORE YOU START
WHAT TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU START? Your Motivation WHY you want to volunteer What is your goal?? WHEN are you available; how much time you have to volunteer; how long you stay in Ireland. WHERE the club is based are you willing to travel to get there? Check on Google Maps how far the role is based from your home.
WHAT TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU START? Your language skills You need basics You will need at least basic level of language to volunteer in the local football club, e.g. practical tasks You will need at least intermediate level of language to volunteer as a coach. Improve Once you start volunteering your language competency will only get better! You may like to attend language classes or conversational groups in your local community.
WHAT TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU START? Screening and Garda Vetting What is that? It s a process that helps the club to check if a volunteer is of a good character. It involves references, Garda Vetting, an informal interview and training. Garda Vettingwhat is it? It s a police check of person s criminal record. Who needs it and who can apply? All people, Irish and non-irish, who work or volunteer with children, older or vulnerable adults (disabled, etc.) You can apply if you have lived in Ireland at least 6 months. How to apply? The club applies for you. They give you a form to complete, which must be returned to the club. You will not have any direct contact with the police.
WHAT TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU START? Be aware Your culture is different from Irish and other volunteers. Depending on our culture, we all may have different ideas what is appropriate or normal. Your Culture Observe Cultural differences can be observed in: - Eye contact, facial expression, gestures and posture, distance between people, touch etc. - Time perception - Gender roles - Power distance Be positive When you don t understand something or want to know why someone has behaved in a certain way simply ask. Be open and say if you feel uncomfortable doing something. Ask Irish people and other volunteers about their culture and tell them about yours.
YOUR RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES YOUR RIGHTS A healthy and safe environment An orientation or induction session Information about the club, including policies and procedures A volunteer position description or volunteer agreement which outlines the tasks that you will be expected to perform and the agreed working hours Be provided with sufficient training and supervision Be protected by appropriate insurance Have your personal information dealt with in a confidential manner Take holidays Say 'no' if you are uncomfortable or feel you are asked to do too much
YOUR RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES Be punctual and reliable To be honest in all your dealings with the club Carry out the duties listed as part of your volunteer role Give notice if your availability changes or you are leaving the club Report any injuries or hazards that you notice Adhere to club s policies and procedures Undertake training as requested Ask for support when needed Support other team members Behave in an ethical manner To inform the volunteer supervisor if there is a problem
