13 The Role of the Mentor Mentor to ensure appropriate work experience is offered to the apprentice through liaison with line managers Ensure progress (both academic and work-based) is maintained through regular reviews and appraisals with the apprentice Review the skills portfolio, help identify gaps (as soon as possible) and suggest potential evidence Help the apprentice to maintain good records of their experience Encourage membership of professional bodies e.g. CIHT, TPS, ICE Stretching the apprentice, suggesting further research & CPD activities e.g. involvement with professional bodies Continued support and encouragement
14 Gateway / End Point Assessment One of key changes in the apprenticeship reforms A skills portfolio is an assessment of an apprentice s practical capabilities in the workplace LCB planned knowledge qualifications HNC L4 ~ HND L5 Passing both of these elements is the gateway and this will enable the candidate to progress to the end point assessment Passing the end point assessment will show occupational competence
