The specific skill needs of a SME active in Human Factors and Safety Dr. Linda Napoletano Human Factors Specialist DeepBlue Srl
A newopportunity Aeronautics and air transport are key drivers of European cohesion and competitiveness, representing 220 billions of Euros and providing 4,5 million of jobs in Europe, a figure that should double by The aviation industry operates globally and requires a highly qualified workforce. But already today and especially tomorrow NOT ONLY professionals in the field of engineering Women in aeronautics don t necessary need to be engineers
An SME in the Aeronautic sector Deep Blue is a human factors and safety SME in the field of transportation and safety critical domains (ATC, Aeronautics, Railways, Healthcare, Oil&Gaz). Created in 2001 it has a highly qualified multidisciplinary and international team with background in Cognitive Ergonomics, Psychology, Safety, Engineering, Interaction Design, User Centred Design, Informatics and Mathematics. Today 25 employees + 15 consultants Very young staff, more than 50% holding a PhD, more than 50% women.
Human Factors and Safety experts Humans make safety and increase system s flexibility and capability to adapt. Improve human performance Improve working environment reduce the error occasions and accident rate Designing human-machine interfaces and developing procedures for both operators and maintenance technicians. Improve usability, maintainability, reliability, and comfort. Analyzing operational safety and developing methods and tools to help operators better manage human error.
The HF & Safety professionals application of knowledge on physical and psychological characteristics to the design of devices, machines, systems, work methods, and environments that take into account safety, comfort, and effectiveness of human users and operators HF and Safety specialists work closely with engineers, safety experts, test and training pilots, mechanics, and cabin crews to properly integrate human factors in aeronautics.
Skills needed 1. At the moment, in Italy, we miss educational curricula to prepare for such a job (theoretical/techniques/domain). 2. HF Concepts in the education of all the figures, given that the human is a key element of aviation 3. Need to know how to deal with problems in their complexity, from the systemic perspective, you do not need people who know how to solve an equation or a small-problem. The "real" problems are always complex, not a university exam /exercise 4. Realistic idea of the job s/he's going to do. 5. Basic education: 95% of interview stops for a lack of knowledge of English, planning skills and logical thinking.
New careers: the glamour of innovation Innovation: new interaction systems, new roles for humans, new tasks for operators, new technology new skills and new educational curricula In the consumer world, technological innovation and the growing attention to the user experience has led to new professions. In aeronautic technological innovation and technical challenges (e.g. increased automation) require new professional profiles. New careers in the aeronautic industry (usability experts, user experience designers, user centred designers, automation designers ) require new curricula and training. Positive impact on the gender issue
The future of education to access aeronautic careers. Round Table(AIRVET)
The round table Title: The future of education to access aeronautic careers. Round Table 14th of April Scientific Bookshop Assaggi in Rome 40 people representing: - Aeronautic industry and Research Centers - University - VET and higher education
1. Attracting talents to aeronautic careers 1. Young people chose University courses for one of two reasons: they have been dreaming of it for their entire life or they know that they'll find a job. Therefore, industry has to clearlycommunicate job opportunities related to each University course to stimulate the interest. 2. Valorise basic sciences. It s important to seek a synergy between basic sciences and applicative ones, don't just get stuck in applicative knowledge. 3. Engage young students since their early life. You can't wait and do it at University! 4. We need to change the current narration about the choice of University. It has to become a distressing moment, a moment of dreaming and selfdetermination. 5. Promote the international education and balance between passion and money.
2. Education and skills 1. Teach to young people project management and teamwork, since high school and lower secondary school. When they go to University they should already know these concepts and then fully apply them. 2. Young people lack of non-technical competencies: so linguistic ability, planning capacity, risk analysis capacity and teamwork are crucial points. 3. Raising importance of software against hardware in the ICT technologies
3. Clustersand alliances 1. Create clusters between industry and education. 2. Review of the current careers and envision which will be the future needs, skills and careers. 3. Organise Focus Groups and set tables for discussions with all stakeholders (industry/university/high schools) to envisage future needs. 4. Support international mobility and mobility from academia to industry and vice-versa to create international, highly qualified networks. 5. Familiarize with the domain. Better link between universities andindustry, in the form of joint PhDs, or internships, or thesis on the R&D projects, sharing people.
4. Promotion ofaeronauticcareers Build a promotion process of the R&D results to feed the motivation and interest. Promote R&D results Incentivate Aeronautic careers Educational topics Curricula and education Stop playing with stereotypes. From just advertise to give answers, offer the opportunity to explore knowledge, and the present new opportunities
4 integrated actions BUILD AND PROMOTE A MAP OF ALL THE AERONAUTIC CAREERS SHOW THE JOB IN A REALISTIC YET COMPELLING WAY: AERONAUTIC CAN BE GLAM PROMOTE IT SERIOUSLY INCENTIVATE INTEREST AND MOTIVATION PROMOTION STUDENTS ACADEMIA INDUSTRY EDUCATION INDUSTRY ACADEMIA REVIEW OF THE CURRENT CAREERS AND ENVISION THE FUTURE NEEDS, SKILLS AND CAREERS. 16 Main messages 1. Do we really need just engineers? 2. One of the assets to foster innovation and increase competitiveness is investing in education and anticipating skill needs. 3. Build new/improved curricula for (new) careers that match future needs: students of todays will be working within 5-10 years. 4. Define new careers to foster innovation in aviation. 5. Women won t need to compete with engineers, but naturally find their place in a wider map of aeronautic careers.
