2 AV s Graduate Ambulance Paramedic roles Thank you for your interest in Ambulance Victoria. With over 150 years of proud history, Ambulance Victoria (AV) works to improve the health of our community by delivering innovative, high-quality ambulance services. We provide pre-hospital care for patients experiencing medical emergencies, and medical transport by both road and air to enable both emergency and non-emergency patient s access to appropriate health care. AV operates across Victoria, with major administrative centres in Melbourne and Ballarat. We have almost 5,000 dedicated employees and volunteers, with over 250 ambulance branches located across the state, and air ambulance access anywhere within Victoria. The Order of Merit Process AV s Order of Merit for graduate paramedic recruitment is about getting the best person for the job, and matching them to their preferred location where available. Our merit-based decisions are based on competitive assessments of our applicants skills, experience and behavioural capabilities, against the inherent requirements of the role. Once you have passed our competitive assessments, your application will be ranked on our order of merit, based on your accumulated score. What does this mean for you? AV s Order of Merit rewards applicants who perform well in all stages of AV s graduate recruitment process by allocating their first preference of location or start date. AV s Order of Merit also rewards applicants who have contributed to their community through volunteer work or have been employed with AV or similar patient transport, health or community services organisation in a volunteer or paid capacity The recruitment process Applications for graduate paramedic roles are open all year round and are processed at the time they are received. Applicants must have either completed their degree or be in their final semester of study to be eligible to apply. Once you apply, you will be allocated to an assessment group. The dates of your selection assessments will depend on the group that you are allocated. 4 Our Recruitment & Selection Process Are you ready to apply? Do you have: The right to work in Australia? Current drivers licence (at least one year on your P2 licence.) CAA-accredited paramedic degree (or are in your final semester)? Have you considered moving anywhere in Victoria for the job? Do you need to stay in your home area? Would you like the challenge of experiencing somewhere new? Step One Application Form Your application form and supporting documents are the first element assessed in our Graduate Ambulance Paramedic (GAP) recruitment process. Applications are submitted online via our website: We will acknowledge receipt of your application in writing. Once you have submitted your application, you will be sent a request to submit your supporting documentation via the online system. After your documentation has been submitted, it will be verified to ensure all requirements have been met. If you meet the pre-requisites for the role (documents listed below), you will be allocated an assessment group and invited to the next stage of the selection process. All applicants must submit the following supporting documents with their application form: Certified copy of evidence of your right to work in Australia Certified copy or an original Driving History Check - VicRoads (and/or relevant state authority) driving history report Original or certified copy of a National Police Records Check that is no more than six months old Original or certified copy of academic transcripts (of your final or mid- year results) Certified copy of your driver s licence (front and back). Professional Referees We require at least two professional referees who can comment on your recent work performance from a supervisory perspective. This assessment is to verify the information gathered throughout the selection process. A referee must not be related to you by birth, marriage or de facto relationship. 5 Our Recruitment & Selection Process Step Two Online Assessments Applicants will receive notification to complete two assessments online: 1. Numerical reasoning 2. Verbal reasoning The numerical reasoning test assesses your ability to use numbers in a logical way, and the verbal reasoning test measures your ability to understand and use facts expressed in words. There is a minimum benchmark for both assessments which applicants must meet, and your scores will contribute to your Order of Merit score. Step Three Preparing for your Interview Your interview will contain two parts: 1. Behavioural Interview 2. Clinical Skills Assessment Preparation is essential to maximise your chance of success. The more prepared you are, the easier it will be to cope with your nerves and the easier it will be for you to be able to fully answer our questions. Before the interview: Know what you re getting yourself in for. Research AV, what the job will require of you, and what you hope to gain as an AV paramedic. Anticipate what questions will be asked Prepare and practice answers to typical questions, using the STAR interview method. Have an agenda: know what you want us to learn about you Know your knowledge, skills, abilities and accomplishments, and how they relate to the GAP role Prepare questions you d like to ask of us Dress for success Take appropriate documents - in order to feel confident and well prepared, you may wish to bring documents to your interview: o spare copies of your resume and application o your planned answers to predicted questions, and points you d like us to know o Reports from your clinical placements o A portfolio showing samples of your work and achievements During the interview: Arrive early, or call to let us know you re delayed. Relax Answer questions using the STAR or CARE method Ask intelligent questions about AV and the GAP role Be honest, be believable and be yourself Make eye contact Be positive Sell yourself, but don t exaggerate. Will you fit in with AV s culture, values and our teams? Are you the best candidate to become an AV Graduate Ambulance Paramedic? Will you help AV achieve our mission? Step Three Preparing for your Interview contd. An interview at AV is a two-way conversation, in which both participants have some goals. Your interview panel wants to determine: Can you do the job? You ll want to determine: Can I do this job? Do I want this job at AV? Does this job offer me the opportunities I want to progress my paramedics career? A representative from both Operations and People and Workforce Strategy will be on your interview panel. 1. Behavioural Interview In the behavioural interview, you ll be asked questions about yourself, your experience and how you have responded in the past to certain scenarios. Your responses to the interview questions enable the panel to better understand your knowledge, skills, qualifications, abilities and personal attributes. The panel are looking for a match between your personal attributes, the selection criteria and the requirements of the position. Interviews will generally be held in Melbourne, and possibly regional offices (to be confirmed). Applicants are encouraged to research a behavioural interview and understand that you will be asked questions based on the GAP Position Description. Applicants must reach the minimum criteria for this assessment in order to progress in the Recruitment and Selection Process. 2. Clinical Skills Questions Applicants will be asked a series of clinical questions, in a scenario situation. Applicants are not expected to provide detailed knowledge of the AV Clinical Practice Guidelines, although knowledge of our Clinical Practice Guidelines may assist. Instead, knowledge of pathophysiology/aetiology, treatment goals, priorities and methods, and knowledge of pharmacology of drugs commonly used by ambulance will be assessed. Applicants must reach the minimum criteria for this assessment in order to progress in the Recruitment and Selection Process. GAP Recruitment Process Information Updated 08/01/2016 Page 6 of 14

7 Our Recruitment & Selection Process Step Four Placement and Offer of employment Once you ve completed all assessments, you will be ranked in the Order of Merit, awaiting an offer of employment from AV. The Order of Merit ranking will continue to change as applicants complete their assessments throughout the year. Please note that placement on the Order of Merit does not guarantee you an offer of employment. When a role becomes available, the highest ranked applicant whose preferences match will be contacted about available locations and start dates. If AV s offer of employment does not suit, you can decline the role, and it will be offered to the next ranked applicant. This will not affect your ranking in the Order of Merit process, but we cannot guarantee that you will receive another offer, or one that better suits your preferences. If you have successfully passed all assessments, but do not reach a suitable ranking to be allocated a role within 12 months, you will be required to reapply and complete the recruitment and selection process again. Step Five Vaccination Records Any offer of employment will be subject to successful completion of our final medical and physical fitness assessment. Applicants must provide evidence of their prior immunisations and immunity to the following conditions before they can complete the medical and physical fitness assessment. Varicella (chicken pox of shingles) Pertussis Measles Mumps Rubella Hepatitis B The vaccination record form contains more information about the vaccination records / evidence you must provide. Applicants will be required to cover the cost of any screening/vaccination required. Step Six Medical and Physical assessment The pre-employment medical and physical assessment aims to evaluate whether an individual can meet the physical demands of the roles and aims to ensure patient and employee safety is maintained. The results of any previous assessments will not be carried over to this stage. Candidates with a pre-existing medical condition are encouraged to bring any supporting medical information. Should a pre-employment medical or physical assessment reveal the necessity for further diagnostic testing then this will be discussed with you. 8 Our Recruitment & Selection Process This assessment can only be conducted through AV s, medical service provider at the applicant s expense (currently $ for the medical and AV will cover the physical). You cannot complete this assessment in another state or with any other agency. Further details about the physical fitness test are provided in the Physical Capacity Assessment section. If you have any questions about the current tests, or your medical conditions, we encourage you to contact our provider, on (03) (follow prompts). For questions relating to the Physical Capacity Testing, please contact AV Recruitment on Results from the Medical and Physical assessment are final. If your overall medical and physical assessment does not meet the minimum requirement, your application is considered closed. If only your physical assessment score does not meet the minimum requirement, you will be able to re-test between three to six months after your initial assessment, at your own expense. If you do not pass this repeat assessment you may reapply with AV after a minimum period of 12 months. Please note: If you do not provide your completed vaccination record at the time of the medical/physical, you will not be deemed fit until this is provided. Please note that it is a condition of any offer of employment that all units of your recognised University degree must be successfully completed. If you are successful in gaining a position with AV, it is condition of your employment to have successfully completed your degree before commencing on-road. If you do not successfully pass all units of your degree, you will unfortunately not be able to commence at AV until you complete your degree. 9 Supporting Documents With your application form, AV requires a number of supporting documents. Please read the following information carefully to ensure you provide the correct supporting documents. Evidence of Right to Work in Australia (Certified Copy) To ensure you have the right to work in Australia, please provide a certified copy of at least one of the following documents: Australian Birth Certificate Australian Citizenship Certificate Australian or New Zealand passport Foreign Passport with evidence of Australian Residency and/or work visa rights Certified Copy of your Driver s Licence Please provide a certified copy of the front and back of your current Victorian Driver s Licence. If you ve copied them on two sheets, ensure both the front and back are certified. Applicants must hold a Victorian Driver s Licence to commence employment with AV. Applicants who do not have a full Victorian Driver s Licence or a Probationary Licence where the holder has held a P2 licence for at least one year will not be eligible to commence employment. If you do not meet these criteria, you are still welcome to apply, however your application may be processed at a later stage. Your University Academic Transcript (Certified Copy) Please note that we can t accept unofficial transcripts. You must submit an official academic transcript, available by contacting the administration department of your university. A Statement of Results obtained online cannot be accepted as the source cannot be verified. Please submit the most recent transcript you have, we must have this on file to show that you are eligible to apply. National Police Records Check (Certified Copy) Applicants must provide a valid National Police Records Check from your state Police Service that is no more than six months old from date of receipt by AV. For current Victorian residents, go to download Online application form for the National Police Certificate and follow Victoria Police s instructions to complete the check. If you ve spent longer than 12 months overseas, we also need a relevant police check from that country. For New Zealand applicants, please go to (see get a copy of your criminal record ) to download the NZ police check form. Please note that Police Checks can sometimes take a number of weeks to complete (and even longer for international checks), so please apply for your police check as soon as possible to ensure your application isn t delayed. Please note that any police record you have will be considered by AV, but applicants will not automatically be precluded from being offered employment on the basis of having a police record. Rather, consideration will be given to the relevance of the offence in relation to the position. The results of any police record check are always treated in the strictest of confidence. 10 Supporting Documents Driving History Report (Certified Copy) Applicants must also provide five year Verification of Driving History report from your relevant Road Traffic Authority. The report should include a statement of demerit points and convictions against the licencee and is at the applicant s expense. This document must not be more than six months old from date of receipt by AV. If you have resided in more than one state or country over the last five years, you will need to provide reports from those states or countries to cover that period as well. 11 Frequently Asked Questions When do applications need to be in? Applications are open all year round and will be processed on an ongoing basis. Assessment usually takes between four and six weeks, and we ll contact you at each stage of the process, to let you know how you re doing, and what to expect next. Please note: due to the volume of applications we receive, it may take some time for you to be placed into an assessment group. I already have a Police Check, can I use that one? AV considers Police Checks only valid for six months. As long as your Police Check was issued less than six months prior to when we receive your application, it is acceptable. Please note: we require a National Police Check, not an individual state check. Can I choose where I will be working? All applicants will be asked to provide their preferred training locations. You will need to move to your permanent location after your graduate year. AV s service needs and your Order of Merit ranking will form the basis of any position offered. AV provides services across all of Victoria. Therefore, offers of employment are based on where we most need to provide services to Victorian communities. Can you send me the relevant application documents to me in hard copy via post? All applications must be submitted online via our website. is our preferred method of contact throughout the recruitment process. Please check your s regularly to ensure you re aware of any updates or requests. I m going on holidays during the selection assessments for my assessment group. Is that OK? In order for us to properly assess your application, you need to be available for all assessment dates in your allocated group. If you do not attend all assessments on your scheduled dates, we won t be able to progress your application. If you miss an assessment date, we will have to close your application, and you will need to re-apply Alternatively, if you notify AV in writing as soon as possible before your scheduled assessments, we can allocate your application to a later assessment group, and provide you with new dates. I am going on holidays in 2016/2017, does that matter? Yes. Due to the importance of AV s work, it s crucial that we have enough paramedics on road at all times to provide services to all Victorians. Therefore, we have to be very structured about when people take annual leave. Upon commencement with AV as a Graduate Ambulance Paramedic, leave roster blocks are structured and allocated in advance. You will be informed of GAP Recruitment Process Information Updated 08/01/2016 Page 11 of 14 your leave periods on the first day of your induction. We understand that you may have important events scheduled in 2016/2017 that you want to attend, but it is usually not possible for you to take annual leave outside these designated timeframes. What is a certified copy? A certified copy means your original document and photocopy have been sighted together by an authorised person who verifies the copy as a true and correct copy of the original. Examples of authorised people are pharmacists, police officers, lawyers, accountants and doctors. Please note both the front and back copy of the driver s licence must be certified. Further instructions regarding certification can be found on the application page on the website. Can I find out my Order of Merit ranking? AV cannot disclose this information, because your ranking is a live number. As the process continues, your place on the Order of Merit ranking will continue to change. Do I incur any costs throughout the process? Yes. You are required to cover your own travel costs to be present for assessments such as interview and medical/physical assessments. Other costs you ll have are the Police Check, Driving History Report and Medical Assessment fees.

12 Frequently Asked Questions Who should I provide as referees? Please provide at least two (preferably three) people who can comment on your behaviour within a working environment from a supervisory perspective. References need to be supervisors or managers who have had a close and recent involvement in your work over the past 12 to 24 months. Employment can be paid or as a volunteer. Please make sure your referees are anticipating contact from AV and are willing to participate. Who will be interviewing me? Each applicant will be interviewed by two panel members, a representative from Workforce Strategy & Recruitment and an Operations representative. What can I do to improve my chances in the selection process? AV runs a competitive selection process, so you should aim to achieve a high standard of performance in each assessment stage. Your placement on the Order of Merit will be a combined score of your assessment in each area of the recruitment process. Why do I need to go through a Physical Assessment? Ambulance Victoria has a duty of care to all employees to minimise the likelihood of work related injuries and we therefore require applicants for paramedic roles to undertake a physical capacity assessment prior to being considered for employment. If I am successful, when will I start? Can I choose when I commence? If you receive an Offer of Employment it will contain details of your assigned induction group and starting date. You can choose to decline the offer of employment and hope for another offer with a more convenient time, but we cannot change the scheduled commencement dates. Available positions will be offered to the most appropriate candidate based on Order of Merit ranking and your preferences. All AV Graduate Paramedics complete a three week induction period before commencing onroad, and 100% attendance during induction is mandatory to ensure you re properly prepared.
