1 Saskatchewan Detailed Occupational Outlook, 2017 to 2021 The Detailed Occupational Outlook provides current and future labour market information for 424 occupations in Saskatchewan over the forecast period 2017 to Information for each occupation includes: projected net job ; job ; d employment and wage; and the skill or educational that is usually required. s are based on a variety of labour market indicators (see Assumptions and Methodology section). A good suggests that an occupation has more favourable or above-average job prospects, fair suggests more balanced or average job prospects, and limited suggests less favourable or below-average job prospects. 3 Highest Paying, Higher-ed Occupations Go to Quick Links Higher-skilled occupations are those that typically require a university degree or a post-secondary certificate, diploma or apprenticeship training and/or management experience. These occupations are also generally the highest paid. Estimated annual wages in 2017 for the top 25 highest paying, higher-skilled occupations, as shown in the table below, range from $111,200 to $265,800 compared to the provincial median wage of $55,100. The top 25 are mainly in management, health, law, and engineering related occupations. Four out of every five of these occupations require management experience or a university degree. Those occupations that require a post-secondary certificate, diploma or apprenticeship training are mostly in the mining, oil and gas sector. 2,820 job are forecasted for these 25 occupations over the 2017 to 2021 forecast period, mostly due to an expected need to replace retiring workers. Economic activity accounts for only 8% of the job. These top 25 occupations represent 5% of the total 60,610 job forecasted for the higher-skilled category. 4 Highest Paying, Lower-ed Occupations Go to Quick Links Lower-skilled occupations are those that typically require high-school completion, some secondary school education with occupation-specific training, or no formal education but with on-the-job training. Many lower-skilled occupations can result in high-paying jobs. Estimated annual wages in 2017 for the top 25 highest paying, lower-skilled occupations, as shown in the table below, range from $54,700 to $99,400 compared to the provincial median wage of $55,100. The top 25 occupations mainly consist of maintenance and service workers, and labourers and machine operators in the trades and transport, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas sectors. Four out of every five of these 25 occupations require high school completion (Grade 12 or equivalent). Those occupations that require less than high school completion are mostly labourers in the manufacturing, mining, oil and gas sectors. 6,250 job are forecasted for these 25 occupations over the 2017 to 2021 forecast period, mostly due to an expected need to replace retiring workers. Economic activity accounts for 28% of the job. These top 25 occupations represent 19% of the total 33,110 job forecasted for the lower-skilled category. 5 Occupations with the Most Openings Go to Quick Links The top 25 occupations with the most job have a balanced set of skill requirements. Half of these occupations are lower-skilled, requiring Grade 12 or less than high school completion with occupational or on-the-job training such as transport truck drivers and retail salespersons. Half of these occupations are higher-skilled, requiring a post-secondary degree, certificate, diploma or apprenticeship training and/or management experience such as managers in agriculture (farmers), administrative officers, early childhood educators and assistants. Estimated annual wages in 2017 for these occupations, as shown in the table below, range from $20,700 to $91,300 compared to the provincial median wage of $55, ,490 job are forecasted for these 25 occupations over the 2017 to 2021 forecast period. Seven out of every ten job are due to a need to replace retiring workers. Economic activity accounts for 28% of the job. Assumptions, Definitions and Methodology Go to Quick Links The forecast is based on Saskatchewan Finance s 2017/18 budget assumptions and output from the Saskatchewan Occupational Modelling System that is proprietary to Stokes Economic Consulting Inc. Forecast data reflects current and expected economic conditions at the time of the development of the forecast scenario (spring 2017). Changes in economic conditions, such as unforeseen fluctuations in commodity prices and changes in economic activity may impact forecasted labour demand. The forecast does not reflect current job vacancies and does not distinguish between full-time and part-time jobs. s (good, fair and limited) are assigned to each of the 424 occupations based on their employment prospects relative to the average of all occupations. Occupations are assessed numerically using a variety of labour market indicators such as changes in employment, unemployment rates, wages, hours worked, Employment Insurance beneficiaries, job vacancies, and forecasted job due to economic growth and retirements. Other sources of labour market intelligence that are considered are sector studies, survey results, and consultations with sector specialists.
