Effective Leaders typically have high IQ's, extensive education, years of experience, and deep knowledge in their fields. As valuable as these skills and abilities are, NONE of these factors predict who will be successful as a leader and who won't. Leadership: The ability to influence others, with or without authority
Attributes of a Leader Guiding vision: Effective leaders know what they want to do, and have the strength of character to pursue their objectives in the face of opposition and in spite of failures. The effective leader establishes achievable goals.
Attributes of a Leader Passion: Effective leaders believe passionately in their goals. They have a positive outlook on who they are, and they love what they do. Their passion for life is a guiding star for others to follow, because they radiate promise!
Attributes of a Leader Integrity: Because they know who they are, effective leaders are also aware of their weaknesses. They only make promises they can follow through on. Under-Promise.Over-Deliver Honesty: Leaders convey an aura of honesty in both their professional and their personal lives. Trust: Effective leaders earn the trust of their followers and act on behalf of their followers.
Attributes of a Leader Curiosity: Leaders are learners. They wonder about every aspect of their charge. They find out what they need to know in order to pursue their goals. Risk: Effective leaders take calculated risks when necessary to achieve their objectives. If a mistake is made, the effective leader will learn from the mistake and use it as an opportunity to explore other avenues.
Attributes of a Leader Dedication: The effective leader is dedicated to his or her charge, and will work assiduously on behalf of those following. The leader gives himself or herself entirely to the task when it is necessary.
Attributes of a Leader Charisma: This may be the one attribute that is the most difficult to cultivate. It conveys maturity, respect for your followers, compassion, a fine sense of humor, and a love of humanity. The result is that leaders have the capability to motivate people to excel. Listening: Leaders Listen! This is the most important attribute of all, listen to your followers.
Leader Vs. Manager Leaders: Do the right thing Manager: Do things right

Consider Why People Volunteer Understanding why people volunteer makes it easier to find volunteers, organize their work, and recognize their contributions. Not everyone is motivated by the same factors People between the ages of 35 and 44 are the likeliest to volunteer Women volunteer more than men
Why People Volunteer Help the community and others Increase self-esteem Help out friends Make new friends Try out a job Polish their resumes Develop new skills Enjoy something they love
Maslow's theory suggests that the most basic level of needs must be met before the individual will strongly desire (or focus motivation upon) the secondary or higher level needs.
Recruiting and Keeping GOOD Volunteers A lot depends on: How their treated Would you volunteer for a person that you cant stand? How their used How they are recognized
Article in June 13 th issue of People Magazine. Our member Vince.
Andrew Carnegie s Book: How to Win Friends and Influence People Fundamental techniques in handling people Don t criticize, condemn or complain Give honest and sincere appreciation Arouse in the other person an eager want.
Six ways to make people like you Become genuinely interested in other people Smile Remember that a person s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves Talk in terms of the other person s interests. Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely.
Win people to your way of thinking The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it. Show respect for the other person s opinions. Never say you re wrong. If you are wrong, admit it quickly. Let the other person do a great deal of the talking. Let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers. Try honestly to see things from the other person s point of view.
Retention Motivation USE them! Special events Parades Exercises Let them be in the spotlight! Just because you re in charge, doesn t mean you have to get all the credit.
Keep them informed Web sites Social Media Text messaging system newsletters Forward National Newsletters
Thank You!!
