4 General Education Courses AMERICAN GOVERNMENT Get ready to dive into the inner workings of the American government! By exploring the history of how America s government began and how it has evolved over the decades, this course will provide you with the tools to better research, analyze, and understand the intricacies of today s government its policy, methods, and current politics. Along the way, you ll study things like the constitution, federalism, civil rights, the structure and processes of the three branches of government, and more. You ll finish this course with a deeper understanding of how the U.S. government has functioned through the years and how it s currently operating. AMERICAN HISTORY I In this course, you ll get a broad overview of American History from New World exploration and settlement through the Civil War. You ll begin by studying major early civilizations on the continent, but before long will find yourself examining the differences between the various American colonies and the challenges faced by this growing, diverse society, like the American Revolution and the new U.S. Constitution. You ll finish by studying America before and after the Civil War: the division between the North and the South, the effect of national expansion and reform, and the impact of various inequalities on American society. AMERICAN HISTORY II Continuing where American History I left off, in American History II you ll delve into American history from 1865 through the New Millennium. Starting with the conquest and exploitation of the West, you ll move on to study industrialization, the changes in urban society and the government, the Roosevelt presidency and the changing face of industrialism, America s role in World War I, the Age of Progressivism, and the cultural challenges of the 1920s and 1930s. From there you ll examine post-world War II culture, the political issues of the 1970s, and the Democratic revival in the 1990s. ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY In this course, you ll study the human body from head to toe. You ll get a good overview of the anatomical structures and physiology of the human body. By the end of this course, you should be able to identify the major anatomical structures and describe how every system works together to keep the body in balance. You ll also learn about selected diseases their definition, cause, signs and symptoms, how they re diagnosed, and ways they can be treated. Once you ve got that down, you ll examine the issues and changes that occur through a human s lifespan. COLLEGE ALGEBRA Welcome to the wonderful world of College Algebra! This course will introduce you to important concepts of algebra. You ll learn about solving equations and inequalities, functions (including linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic), systems of equations and inequalities, and series and sequences. You ll also discover tools and techniques for manipulating algebraic expressions and solving systems of linear equations and inequalities.

You ll be introduced to the essential elements needed to understand, analyze and create arguments. You ll learn about induction, deduction, informal fallacies, Aristotelian and symbolic logic, modes of persuasion, and language and meaning culminating in the development of reasonable strategies for belief formation. When you ve completed this course, you ll be able to create your own well-reasoned arguments. And you ll be able to recognize your own biases, evaluate your own conclusions, and assess the reasonableness of arguments, positions, and beliefs. ENGLISH COMPOSITION I Time to develop and refine your written communication skills. This course will give you a firm understanding of the writing process from initial idea to final draft. You ll learn to achieve a clear and effective style in your writing, identify elements of sentence structure, find spelling mistakes, and understand proper and improper punctuation. During this course, you ll practice applying the steps of the writing process and hone your skills by writing effective and grammatically correct essays. Finally, you ll discover practical strategies and guidelines for writing research papers. The goal of this course is to prepare you to write effectively in both personal and professional environments. ENGLISH COMPOSITION II Here, you can take what you ve learned in English Composition I to the next level. First you ll review the basic principles of the writing process. Then you ll learn helpful research and citation techniques, how to format documentation, and how to critique writing samples for style and substance. Finally, discover the difference between MLA, APA, and Chicago Style guides, as well as the writing styles required by different disciplines. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE In this course, you ll explore the scientific, political, economic, and social implications of environmental science. You ll start by learning the basic chemical processes and chemical composition of organisms, the importance and functions of the cell, and types of cellular cell division. When it comes to genetics, you ll study the structure of the human genome, the flow of genetic DNA, and the structure of the DNA molecule. INTRODUCTION TO ECONOMICS In this course, you ll be introduced to both microeconomic and macroeconomic problems and principles. As you study, you ll develop a logical, conceptual, and analytical understanding of economic concepts. You ll learn about free and competitive markets, how government actions affect markets, and the effects of trade on the economy. Most significantly, you ll gain a new understanding of the economic way of thinking. INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE You re about to explore the elements of the three genres of literature fiction, poetry, and drama and discover what defines them and differentiates them. You ll learn the origins of literature and the purposes behind studying literature. You ll also learn to associate studying literature with critical thinking and reading skills. Additionally, you ll learn to analyze and critique works of fiction, poetry, and drama. You ll look at the theories and concepts of psychology: its history, key perspectives and issues, current trends, and its scientific research methods. In addition, you ll look at the different phases and stages in human development, sexuality, gender, and different mental disorders as they relate to psychology. You ll examine health psychology and approaches to health management, as well as the methods and effectiveness of psychotherapy. INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY This course will look at social behavior in everyday life. Explore the field of sociology in terms of its history, theoretical perspectives, research methods, and ethical issues. You ll examine socialization and the factors that affect socialization and social interactions. You ll learn about globalization, cultural diversity, critical thinking, new technology, and the growing influence of mass media. You ll study the impact that poverty, families, education, urbanization, religion, technology, and discrimination have on societies. By the end of the course, you ll be able to understand and explain the process of social change. MACROECONOMICS Welcome to Macroeconomics! This course introduces the foundational concepts of economic principles, but the focus will be on primarily macroeconomic principles, including measurement, macroeconomic fluctuations, and policy issues. In addition you ll learn about free and competitive markets, inflation, employment, the monetary system, fiscal policy, and the economic way of thinking. You will be presented with real-world contemporary examples that apply theory to practice, demonstrating the relevance of macroeconomic thought. MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY In this course, you ll study medical terminology, symbols, and abbreviations. As you do, you ll learn how to apply this new language in the field of health care. Terms will be covered based on their function and their relation to the structure of the body, but the main focus will be on medical vocabulary. You ll look at threat prevention, crisis response, and operations recovery, as well as challenges those in the industry face while maintaining mission operations and staff accountability in the midst of multiple overlapping roles and responsibilities in our rapidly changing world. INTRODUCTION TO POLICING In this course, you ll examine the evolution of policing and the impact that history has had on the current law enforcement system. You ll also look at methods, issues, and challenges of the present-day police force. Throughout this course, you ll study the organization of law enforcement; the roles, functions, and styles of policing; issues related to policing in foreign countries; and laws as related to policing. 14 Criminal Justice Courses JUVENILE JUSTICE Get ready for an overview of American juvenile justice.
