5 Advantages of using smartphones 1. Price Lower cost than a handheld terminal or sets of several dedicated terminals. 2. Functions and Technology The latest technologies and well developed hardware parts, CPU memory and many extra functions, such as Camera, GPS, Sensors, and millions of Applications are available throughout the world 3. Usability Most users are familiar with smartphones and this reduces the cost of installation and training. User-friendly and familiar functions, interfaces, and notifications reduce mistakes. 4

Smartphone manufacturer s warranties aren t always clear. Some people might not like smartphones. (especially in Japan!?) Frequent updates and many different models. 6

10 Use Case 1 Automobile Dealer: Controlling/Managing Car Inventory < Problem > Dealers are responsible for controlling stock, accessories, delivery, maintenance, and related tasks, but finding 1 car in a lot of 400 cars can be time consuming and labor intensive. < Before > Most cars for sale are usually stored at the dealer. After receiving cars from the factory and payment from a customer, the dealer adds extra accessories and inspects the car. To reduce the time and cost, the dealer rents about 10,000 square meters of land. However, finding cars was a difficult and timeconsuming task. 9

11 Use Case 1 Automobile Dealer: Controlling/Managing Car Inventory RAIN RFID tags and RFID-AsReaders improved car placement workflows. < After > 1. RFID tags are placed at each car parking space. 2. When a car comes from the factory, the staff adds RFID tag in each car. 3. When parking cars, Both RFID tags in the car and parking space are scanned and saved by AsReader. 4. The scanned data is sent to the central server. 5. Using AsReader, the staff can find cars immediately. < Results > Average lead-time was reduced from 4 to 3 days. The ratio of on-time deliveries was dramatically increased from 49% to 98%. Lead Time: Reduced 4 3 days On-Time: Increased 49 98%! Cut down on paper work and speed up! Costs reduced. 12 Use Case 2 Automobile Manufacturer: Asset Management < Problems > Each branch had different systems, the company could not control it centrally. The locations of assets were not controlled and asset losses occurred as a result. New assets were controlled by handwritten stickers and paper documents. Controlling slips from customers was cumbersome. Center wanted to know delivery times. 15

The delivery center can control situations more effectively. Digitalized slips reduce the time and labor required for managing unnecessary paperwork. 16

18 Use Case 5 Supermarket: Inventory Management < Problems > Supermarkets were controlling inventory with handheld terminals. Handheld terminal costs were quite high. < Before > Handheld terminals were used for inventory management. Cost: Around $2,000 USD or higher For each new shop, several terminals were required but it was cost-prohibitive. 17

19 Use Case 5 Supermarket: Inventory Management AsReader is used as PDA at a significant cost savings! < After > AsReader with ipod touch was installed, instead of handheld terminals. Large, immediate cost saving! AsReader supports Biz/Browser, middleware, so current system could be used. No system development costs ipod touch enabled them to do new things, for example, voice talk, take and save photos, etc. < Results > With the current system, significant device costs were immediately saved. This helped to save costs for shop expansions. Many functions on the ipod touch have continued to improve business in to the future as well. 18

20 Use Case 6 Clothing Manufacturer: Inventory Control for Distribution < Problems > Incoming shipments took a lot of time to count because of the large quantity of goods. Inventory checks and restocking of goods in shops were inefficient. < Before > Shipping Arriving The goods were packed with a list/slip placed on the box. Slip The containers were checked by opening each box and checking the slip against the contents of the box. Next, the data was saved into the system as a separate process. 19

21 Use Case 6 Clothing Manufacturer: Inventory Control for Distribution RAIN RFID tags and RFID-AsReader improved business efficiency. < After > Shipping Arriving Scan tags and check Send data with the slip Slip Scan the tags of goods in the box and issue a slip from the system and place it on the box. Inventory Check Scan all the tags in the shop Without opening the box, the number of goods can be checked thanks to RAIN RFID. < Results > It is now possible to check the number of goods in the box without opening. This resulted in significant time and labor savings while increasing accuracy. Using the scanned data, the process became more efficient and more effective. 20

22 Use Case 7 Hospital: 3 Point Check < Problems > 3 Point Checks were done with a laptop and corded-scanner. There were a limited number of laptops to share, wheeling the table made noise, and the cables/equipment were cumbersome. < Before > Laptops were transported on rolling tables. It sometimes required patients to move to it, or it took a long time to get one to the patient. Especially at night, wheeling these tables in to rooms was noisy and interrupted patients and neighboring-patients sleep. There were never enough laptops and oftentimes nurses would have to wait a long time to use one. 21

23 Use Case 7 Hospital: 3 Point Check 3 Point Check is done with just one AsReader! < After > Replaced a Laptop with corded-scanner on a rolling cart. Lowered costs (and size) of devices. AsReader supports electrical medical record systems and the system update is not required. Easy to replace existing devices. Send Data The ipod touch enabled staff to do new things, like talk secure intercom, take/save photos, etc. < Results > Because the compact AsReader is easy to carry and do 3 Point Checks, it improved the speed of the process, reduced device problems, and eliminated unnecessary moving of patients, wheeling of computer tables, and plugging computers in to wall-sockets. 22
