7 Who delivers transport in Newcastle? The Council as Highways Authority owns, maintains and invests in 3bn worth of road and cycle network in the city. It also promotes travel plans for schools and businesses; maintains public rights of way, improves road safety and regulates taxis; The Integrated Transport Authority develops and implements a strategy for Tyne and Wear, including Metro, bus networks, sustainable transport programmes, major road schemes, freight, regional rail, and concessionary transport; Nexus is the delivery arm of the ITA and it owns, manages, and is modernising the Tyne and Wear Metro as well as monitoring bus service performance and securing around 300 bus services or part-services on behalf of the ITA; Tyne and Wear authorities alongside Durham and Northumberland help to advocate improvements to national rail and the strategic road network as well as vehicle innovation. The proposed Combined Authority will deliver improvements to transport planned and delivered at an ITA and Local Enterprise Partnership area. Partners including private and community sector organisations e.g. operators of buses, taxis, community transport, the Metro operator (DB Regio Tyne and Wear), the Ports, the Airport, the Highways Agency, Network Rail, Sustrans and Living Streets, car clubs, cycle shops, cycle hire, cycle safety providers and cycling campaigns all play important roles.

9 Commercial Services Specialist Identify and develop growth opportunities, positioning them as fit for market through a considered approach to efficiency, innovation and cost reduction Work alongside service areas to provide challenge and instigate performance improvement aimed at removing barriers to delivering in house contracts Research, propose and develop viable propositions for expansion that are innovative in collaboration with appropriate internal and external partners
