6 BNSF Railway Company Operates one of the largest railroad networks in North America 32,500 route miles covering 28 states and two Canadian provinces. Hauls coal to generate more than 10 percent of the electricity produced in the United States. Challenge The company s Engineering/Maintenance of Way department is responsible for ensuring the reliability of the railroad s track, switches, bridges and other equipment and structures, much of which is located in very remote locations on 32,000 route miles of railroad. Management needed this information for budgeting and maintenance planning Solution: PARS Mobile is a field reporting system Developed to support BNSF Engineering/Maintenance time/payroll data entry as well as WCM (World Class Maintenance) planning and work activity reporting Supports the capture of time/payroll and work details for some 8,000 crew/field employees of BNSF Railway Company, Uses efficient and accurate daily reporting from approximately 2,000 laptop users from remote locations of the railroad where connectivity formerly proved unreliable 11 July 9, 2009 BNSF Railway Company Contd Results Timely Information Key to Maximizing Capital Investments Sybase Solution takes advantage of low band-width phone connections in remote areas of the railroad to enable daily, efficient field reporting. Compression ratios of the data or code are very high so that there is always efficient use of phone or network bandwidth Its recovery capabilities when connections are dropped. It picks up where the transmission may have left off. Reduced the time spent by users entering data into the system in some cases by 50 per cent. BNSF is realizing productivity gains and labor cost savings by making field users more productive in the task of data collection- Saving 15 minutes per day per mobile person. Amounting to labor savings of $7,500 per day. For example, it costs the railroad $300,000 to replace one mile of rail and $120,000 to $200,000 to replace a switch. If the company replaces track or equipment a few years too early, it costs a lot of money that didn t have to be spent at that time. On the other hand, if they wait too long to replace equipment, the impact could be a track outage resulting in service delays for customers' freight. 12 July 9, 2009

8 UTI Couriers AUTOMATING KEY BUSINESS PROCESSES They offer a standard call centre channel and aweb portal interface for ad-hoc collections as well as a scheduled daily collection service for their bigger customers. For the ad-hoc channels, a collection request is created either through the national contact centre or through the Web interface. This generates an event which is sent over the GPRS network to the relevant driver s mobile Intermec device; the event includes all information pertaining to the parcel, the collection address, the number of items for collection and even estimated parcel weights and dimensions. The driver acknowledges receipt and confirms availability (or otherwise) to handle the collection. Upon collection, the parcel is scanned into the system and begins its journey through UTi s logistics network. Every item has a unique identification. The parcel goes into a sorting facility, where it is scanned out of the vehicle which collected it, gets sorted in accordance with the service level and destination information and then scanned into the appropriate transport for distribution to another region. When it arrives at the other distribution centre, it is scanned out of the long haul, sorted again, and finally moves into a local delivery vehicle for dispatch to the consignee. 15 July 9, 2009 UTI Couriers AUTOMATING KEY BUSINESS PROCESSES From the driver, who needs to know what to expect when he collects; the sorting and distribution centres, which need to plan for onward deliveries; the customer who needs to know where his consignment is; and UTi Sun Couriers, which uses the information to better manage and improve its business, information is paramount. Electronic events are generated by the mobile devices at every point in the process where the parcel is handed over from one link in the chain to another,. These events are fed into the Sybase system in a near real-time manner. All the information goes into backend databases via a well-defined integration layer. The near real-time integration was a very important design consideration because it means the data about the parcel is always ahead of the physical parcel. At every point where a parcel is handled, all the parcel s data is already available on the mobile of the person handling it. This is what enables the key business drivers of better efficiency, revenue protection, curbing theft and general operational proactiveness 16 July 9, 2009

9 North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) The (NCDOT) Bridge Management Unit is responsible for inspecting more than 18,000 bridges in accordance with federal guidelines. Also inspects 4000 related structures including pipes, culverts and overhead signs. Challenges Historically, this was a paper-based process, which was inefficient and inaccurate. Each inspection team collected data differently, leading to inconsistent data point collection. Guidelines called for each bridge to be inspected every two years. The unit includes about 60 inspectors plus 11 independent consulting firms and engineers Solution To increase the efficiency, accuracy and consistency of its bridge inspection process, NCDOT implemented a Tablet PC-based mobile inspection system powered by Sybase SQL Anywhere Inspectors enter their measurements, observations and load their digital photos Key Benefits Increases inspection efficiency, accuracy and consistency Eliminates paperwork, allowing inspectors to spend more time on inspections Makes inspection reports available almost immediately 17 July 9, 2009 North Carolina Department of Transportation Reliability, Foolproof Synchronization and Cost-Effectiveness NCDOT uses a three-tier synchronization process Each inspection team includes a team leader and a team member, both have a Tablet PC running the WIGINS Application, the SQL Anywhere database and the MobiLink client. Team leaders synchronize their Tablet PCs each morning to get their inspection assignments and previous inspection information. Then, periodically throughout the day, team members synchronize their Tablet PCs with their team leaders Tablet PCs via a wireless peer-to-peer network. At the end of the day, the team leaders synchronize their Tablet PCs with the consolidated database via wireline LANs. Allows for reduced network traffic by reading the remote database transaction log to determine what must be uploaded. Only those rows that have been inserted, updated, or deleted since the last synchronization are sent. 18 July 9, 2009
