PMS Enhancements for Utilization with AASHTO Pavement-ME Webinar Presentation to the Pavinar Community Presented By: Fadi Jadoun, Ph.D., P.E., P.Eng. Stantec Consulting Sep. 02, 2014
Agenda PMS Pavement-ME Link? Why? How Flexible is your PMS? Pavement Data Collection/Testing Services Examples Examples of Section Attributes in a PMS Contribution of PMS Data to Pavement-ME PMS-Pavement-ME Envisioned Levels of Integration Example Challenges with PMS Data Local Calibration, Overview
PMS Pavement-ME Link? Why? Many of the inputs required to run Pavement-ME can be found in a PMS; Calibration requires Historical data and other inputs that are typically found in a PMS; and Like a PMS, The Pavement-ME Calibration Process is Dynamic. PMS gets updated with new performance data and attributes on regular basis.
How Flexible is Your PMS? Image courtesy of She Owns It Any good PMS is flexible enough to allow for the inclusion and management of attributes required for various Pavement-ME operations. It is not only about manipulating existing data within a PMS, rather introducing new pavement data that agencies collect on regular basis.
Pavement Data Collection/Testing Services Examples Collect Surface Condition Data Non-destructively (downward/windshield options) Collect Structural performance data Non-destructively using FWD to assess layer moduli, M R, SN eff, etc..
Pavement Data Collection/Testing Services Examples, Cont. Pavement layer material types and thickness using GPR (Non-destructive), and/or Coring & Boreholes. Characterization of sampled material (CBR, HMA Cores Va, etc..) High Resolution Images
Examples of Section Attributes in a PMS Section name, Limits, County, City, etc. Geometric (Length, Width, # lanes, Divided? Curbs, Drainage, Median, Shoulder, etc.). Traffic (Func. Class, AADT, % Commercial, % Growth, Speed Limit, Truck Route? Bus Route?, etc.). Structure (Pavement Type, Layer thickness, Subgrade rating, etc.). Environmental Zones. Performance History (Cracking, Rutting, etc.)
Contribution of PMS to Pavement-ME Info. for Building Projects (Project info.) Pavement Management System (PMS) Info. Specific for Calibration (Work & performance history)
Contribution of PMS to Pavement-ME Mostly applicable to Input Levels 2 and 3 New Design Overlay Design Local Calibration Subgrade M R from FWD at nearby rep. Locations. Geotechnical Information/water table at nearby rep. locations. Layer Backcalculated Moduli from Similar Projects. Asphalt volumetrics from post construction QC. Traffic History & Growth from nearby rep. projects. Layer Thickness Information (GPR/cores/boreholes). In-Situ Soils/water table information from FWD and/or GPR, cores and boreholes. Effective structural number of existing pavement from FWD (for comparison with AASHTO 1993 design). Performance History Layer Thickness Information (GPR/cores/boreholes) In-Situ Soils/water table information from FWD and/or GPR and cores and boreholes Post Construction QC records (V a, Density, thickness)
PMS-Pavement-ME Envisioned Levels of Integration Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Most Inputs required by Pavement-ME are present in PMS and can be massaged and exported in Pavement- ME format; Most inputs required by Pavement-ME are present in PMS; some can be exported in Pavement-ME format while others must be manually exported; and Most Inputs Required by Pavement-ME are present in the PMS but have to be manually exported.
Example Challenges with PMS Data Challenge Network Level Information Data Format is different Missing Attributes Possible Solution(s) Yes, however, entering each project-level investigation results into a PMS makes the system more invaluable with time. Either change your data collection methodology, or Add fields in PMS that automatically calculate the preferred format of the same data, e.g. LTPPequivalent distresses; or Convert the data outside of PMS and save it in a Pavement-ME compatible format Basic attributes such as AADT or layer thickness information should be investigated and populated. Realize that there will always be some missing attributes in PMS, especially those that are difficult to apply to the project level. e.g. Axle Load Distribution Factors. Handle outside PMS.
Challenges with PMS Data, Cont. NCDOT Example LTPP measures alligator cracking as % Lane area. NCDOT assigns a rating (none, light, moderate, or severe) and extent based on the cracked length. Assumptions to convert: 1. Distresses within the long PMS segments are proportional to those in the 500-feet LTPP sections. 2. low severity alligator cracking was assumed to be 1.5 feet in width, moderate = 2 feet in width, and severe = 2.5 feet in width. Total Fatigue Cracking = 5.9 (low, m2 ) (Moderate,m2 ) (Severe,m2)
Challenges with PMS Data, Cont. Example of data not in a PMS: VCD Generator and ALDF Selector for NCDOT
Challenges with PMS Data, Cont.
Challenges with PMS Data, Cont. Enter WIM ID to obtain: 1- VCD 2- HDF 3- MAF 4- Axles/Truck
Local Calibration Overview Ongoing Process (Once every 3 years?) Good coverage of pavement types, func. Class, environment, subgrade types, etc. Performance history is critical. Performance rating methods for data in PMS should be similar, or converted to LTPP Rating. Accuracy of pavement structure, materials, and subgrade information is critical.
Pre-Calibration Steps Review PMS for available sections and attributes (Functional Class, location, subgrade soils, etc.) Build a DOE and select sections (for Calibration and Validation) with most data coverage and history. Manually build one Pavement-ME project for each section using default calibration values. If possible, automate the creation of the entire DOE projects for an appropriate range of factors. Execute Pavement-ME in batch mode and extract predicted data for local calibration.
