Design Problem Task Analysis Fragrances are produced by many companies. Not all are well known. A British company has produced perfumes and now wants to break into the aftershave market. Market research has been carried out and they want to corner a niche that they have perceived and confirmed in the youth market. Many youths buy cheap products for daily use. They are especially aware of the need for the use of deodorants and aftershaves in their teens. Deodorants are not expensive but aftershaves can be. The company would like to corner the market for a less expensive aftershave that can be worn daily but is not to expensive. The product will need to look good and attract potential purchasers. They will need good promotional strategies to capture the target group in a very competitive market. Possible Solutions Trendy Company Name Vouchers and Coupons Good Packaging Sales Display Point Mailings A well designed container Posters Design brief Branding Image Tester Scratch and Sniffs. I am going to create a new Identity for the Company and a Brand Image for the aftershave. I will also design and model the bottle and the packaging for the bottle. Who The product will be aimed at youths but it should have qualities that can attract other age groups males. The name, branding image, shape and form of the container and packaging, materials and colours used should be attractive to youth and a wider audience if possible. when Will it be used. The company name and branding image will need to be used on the container and packaging at all times. The product should be used daily as will the bottle but not the packaging. The packaging will be used for display and transportation. where Will it be used. The CI and branding image will need to go on all promotional materials as well as the packaging and container. The packaging and containers will be used at home, in the shops, to transport to display.the container may also be carried by the user to work, school, clubs etc. will need strength and mustn't brake. Think about packing for transport, display and storage. What What company name and branding image will be suitable. Unique, modern culture? What packaging will be needed to protect, to promote to transport and store easily. What materials will be suitable for the bottle and the packaging plastics, boards, cards, glass, paper, wood, metal. What colors, images, fonts, shapes and forms will be required? What information will need to be displayed CI, the Branding Image, quantities and legal information, bar codes and so on. Why Will it be used. The CI and identity will be needed for recognition, to promote, to attract customers as will the bottle and packaging. The container and packaging will need to contain, to protect, to store and to transport. They will need to be comfortable to use but also be attractive. How Will they be used to promote, for for recognition, to display, to contain, to transport, to store, to release the fragrance, to be carried, to stand when not in use. Will need to be stable and safe. Need to be held needs to be comfortable and easy to use, to open. Will be discarded when empty need to be recyclable. Packaging may need to display images, information as will the container. How will it be manufactured, printed, disposed of.

research My Task Analysis enabled me to see that I need to research similar products and analise the qualities of the products. I will need to consider many areas such as the intended market and the shape and form, colour, materials, weight, size, ergonomics, stability, protective qualities, culture, production, safety, waste and recycling of the outcomes that I am going to design and model. I will therefore carry out some initial research before starting my initial ideas and developments. Company Identity Product Analysis Most company fragrance manufacturers have their name displayed simply in a specific font unique to them. A standard font can be used but care is taken not to use a font that is already used by another fragrance manufacturer. I will need to ensure that I do the same. Often just the name is used but sometimes a simple image/symbol is used as in the Gucci identity. It has a simplified G reversed and overlapped to form the symbol. Sometimes an image with colour is used as in the Old Spice identity. If a manufacturer is very well known like Calvin Kline, just the initials can be used but I could not do this with the company as it is not yet well known enough. Colour is not used much for the company identity because it often has more impact if just in black or in reverse white if it needs to go on a bottle or the packaging which might have colour. Also it needs not to distract from the brand image or it needs to work with it. The Kenzo company name below is usually in black but if it needs to go over another colour or contrast against the liquid in the bottle then sometimes colour needs to be used. The Company Identity should remain the same colour if possible. ANALYSIS I will need to use a font that is not used by another fragrance company. I need to keep the identity simple with the name in full. Black will be the most versatile decision and colour should be avoided. It can then be reversed to white if it needs to. A very simple image can be used but nothing to complicated because sometimes the company identity needs to be reproduced very small. Branding image Product Analysis Branding images are created so that the potential purchaser can easily recognise a sought product. With aftershave a series of fragrances can be manufactured for the same brand. Often this is accompanied by a lifestyle promotion. Polo by Ralph Lauren is a good example. The branding image retains the horse and player image created for the brand through its range of products and as shown below the background colour only changes to distinguish the different fragrance. The Polo Sport deliberately does not have the same image but a flag because it wanted a different image for its younger target group. Burberry uses its distinctive check pattern for the range but alters slightly the colour of the check pattern for each different aftershave. XS by Paco Robanns was the original brand that just used the XS letters and when another fragrance was developed they added the rose to the letters for the Black XS aftershave. Kenzo has developed very distinct background imaging for each of its aftershaves. They are very distinctively lifestyle images as shown below. Kenzo Power, Kenzo for Men and Kenzo Tokyo. Kenzo is one of the newer products and you can see that the lifestyle images are becoming modern and also active for the younger target group. ANALYSIS I think the most important thing from my analysis is the imaging used. For my younger teen target group I need to develop an image that is striking, memorable and eye catching. Something that the younger audience will associate themselves with. The name also needs to be relevant to the targeted group in the same way. The Tokyo fragrance has also used colour, very bright colour to represent the bright lights of the Tokyo night life.

Product Analysis Bottle Davidoff Hot Water Jean Paul Gaultier Lacoste When used correctly, bottles can be a huge beneficial factor for promoting the company. Several of the 'big name' bottles share many things in common, I should therefore try to use the shared ideas in my own bottle for it to be an effective outcome for the company. Most of the bottles I looked at have a unique shape or colour ('Jean Paul Gaultier';, 'Lacoste'), something to identify the bottle by, something that will make it stand out against other bottles. Some of the bottles also used a shape or image representing the name of the aftershave (the clenched fist representing the 'brave' idea in the 'Diesel, Only The Brave' bottle. I should use either one (or both) of these techniques when developing my bottle. I will try and relate the bottle to the branding image as well as giving it a unique, identifying shape. Several of the bottles use a minimum of 3 colours in their design. This means that when being mass produced, the cost is minimal, it also keeps the bottle simple looking and versatile. The colours are also often linked to those in the C.I. or branding image ('Calvin Klein Man'). I will aim to use very few colours in the development of my bottle as well as at least one colour from the C.I. and branding image. 6 Product Analysis Aftershave Box Aftershave box's are generally a very simple shape, this means that production and storage efficiency is maximised. This generally means that the boxes can do very little to stand out. The way they usually do this is is either by using bright colours (Davidoff Hot Water), by giving it a 'vintage' look (Diesel fuel for life) or using unusual materials for the box (Lacoste, Jean Paul Gaultier), however this means that the packaging is not as environmentally friendly as cardboard or paper. It seems that the box's that have more unique shapes or features and stand out more are more successful. Another common feature of boxes is that they have recently started to be as environmentally friendly as possible as well as meeting all health and safety standards, this means that the customer will often feel much more comfortable when purchasing the item. Boxes also need to display all the vital information, such as health warnings, volume, contact details and ingredients. The colours in aftershave box's often match those of the bottle and are usually a maximum of 3, this means that printing costs are as low as possible and that the bottle and box make a smart, clear pair. These colours are also often linked to the branding image. It would be vital to include at least one of the company colours in each of the boxed otherwise there would be no way of identifying the company that produced it. Some boxes use a subject as the focal point of their design, often an interest of the target audience (Diesel, Fuel For Life), and attempt to achieve a certain obvious look, either modern (Lacoste), Powerful (Davidoff, Hot Water), Classy (Givenchy Vetyver) or Classic/Retro (Hugo Dark Blue), it would therefore be wise to decide on what look you are trying to achieve before you proceed any further. Although each box has a basic net, they always have a secure open/close mechanism as well as protective inners. Without either of these the box would be useless. The inner of the box is usually very simple and made of cheap materials, usually because it is not visible from the outside, however if you were to put the inside of the box on show you would need to make the inner more attractive. 7 Research Analysis By carrying out my research and analysing my collected information I have come to the conclusion of how each of my promotional outcomes will be both as I intend as well as being successful if put on the market. For my C.I. I need to make sure that the font is easy to read yet has a uniqueness about it. If I includes an image it must be simple and memorable., Suitable colours that are easy to put on nay future product need to be sought. My C.I. will need to have something unique about it to make it memorable. My identity also needs to look both classy yet clear. I may find it useful to have the company name as the focal point of the C.I. The branding image will preferably be based on an interest of my target audience (teenagers), perhaps music or something 'retro'. The colours of the branding image will need to relate to the general idea of the aftershave and its image, but also, like the C.I., versatile and unique. My research suggests that somewhere in my branding image I could include the name of the aftershave as well as a stylised image. My branding image will need to be clear and any text on it must be easy to read. I will need to include several things when developing my bottle. It must be an ergonomic shape, easy to hold and comfortable to use. My bottle will also need to have the use of a minimal number of colours which relate to the C.I. and branding image. The bottle must be safe to hold and sturdy, meaning it will need to fit together well. There will need to be something different about my bottle so that it can be easily identified. It will also need to include features that are attractive to my target audience. My box will need to act as both protection for my bottle and a promotional product for my company. It will need to include vital information (e.g. ingredients, contact information, bar code etc.). It should also display my C.I. and branding image as well as using the suitable company colours in the design. The box should be made from suitable materials with health, safety and the environment taken into full consideration. Transportation is a big issue where packaging is concerned, the box will therefore need to be designed to protect the bottle and make display, storage and transportation of it as simple as possible. Finally, as my aftershave will be different to most, it has a different target audience to most, I should reflect this idea in the packaging. I may do this by relating the box to an interest of my audience, or giving it a unique feature, something that would mean it stands out to teenage boys. 8 1 Initial Ideas Corporate Identity Upon research I have discovered that the majority of aftershave brands use their name as the focal point of their C.I. Because my product is aimed at the younger market (13-18 years old) I will have to try and make the identity suitable for and attractive to younger people, thus incorporating teenage interests into the identity. As well as this I will need to make the C.I. identifiable with aftershave by using a classy name as the focal point I have decided to take ideas 5 ('One'), 6 ('Gilmour') and 13 ('Harris') for further development. I have chosen these because they have the most appropriate name and look the most identifiable as an identity for an aftershave. Some of the initial ideas would be more suited for branding images rather that corporate identities, I may carry these ideas over to when I start to develop branding images.

Font Development 1 C. I. From the research and surveys done I have discovered that the most popular and appropriate names and design for my C.I. were 'Gilmour', 'One', and 'Harris'. I also found out that people feel a name as the focal point for an aftershave company would be better than one with an image as well as the name, this is because the name on its own gives a classy and recognizable feel. I have chosen to look at different fonts and how they would portray the company's image. 1 8 After looking at different fonts and how they fit with my company name I have decided that the three best fonts and therefore the ones that I will carry forward for further development are fonts; 3, 4 & 5. I made this decision based on a survey I carried out and also the fonts that I feel would best suit my company. Some fonts were too childish, some lacked in originality and others lacked individuality. Some of the fonts were too feminine, some were to masculine, the font I will use needs to be used for both genders as my C.I. will be used for both male and female products. Below is a pie chart representing the survey I carried out to decide the best fonts to use: From the 3 fonts that were the most favored in the survey and therefore the ones I chose to carry forward to see how they looked with the other possible names I can only choose one. I can also only choose 1 name to go with this font. I therefore need to choose the best combination of name and font. I feel that the most appropriate name and the font it looks best in is 'Gilmour' in font 4.

Development 2 C. I. Position & Colour. Now that I've chosen an appropriate font and name for my branding image, I need to add something unique to it, something that is easily identifiable as part of my company. I have decided to do this by emphasizing the first letter (the 'G') of my C.I. I will now look at different possible colours to use with the identity. The colour will affect how the company will be looked at and people's first impressions it. The 'G' is too thin in comparison to the rest of the text have decided to thicken the 'G' rather than thin the rest of the text in, this means that the identity will be bolder and easier to read. The dot above the 'I' is also obstructing the rest of the identity so I will remove this and possibly replace it more suitably later on. The identity now looks more proportionate and clear. I will experiment with different positioning of the text to see if anything else may suit the C.I. I will now experiment with different positioning of the text, from this I will judge how best to lay out my C.I. I have decided to follow up with the 6 th option (bottom right). I chose this version of the identity because it is the clearest and the most even looking of the six. The pie chart shows the results I collected when asking other class members which of the six different colours they preferred and thought best suited the C.I. The results clearly show that the original black was clearly the most popular. The black is also the most versatile and is most appropriate for the type of company mine is.

Development 3 C. I. Final font shape and Testing I feel that the identity is a bit bland and could do with the subtle use of another colour. I decided to incorporate a thin red outline to the image. This allows me to vary the background colour of things I use my C.I. on and gives it a more unique look. I used red as the outline because it sharply contrasts black and was a popular choice when exploring the colours of the dot. My identity needed something to fill the space between the 'G' and the rest of the text, so I decided to put a dot above the 'I'. I experimented with different colours but I decided to keep the black look as it blended in well and kept the classy look. I have chosen to carry finalize the identity with the red outline. Now I have my final C.I. I need to explore the how it appears over a range of sizes. The identity will be used on things as large as billboards, and as small as bottle caps (for example), not to mention the obvious such as business cards, boxes, bottles etc. In order for the best results the identity needs to look clear, effective and recognisable on all these sizes, which I have analyzed below. I conclude that the C.I. that I have finalised does meet all of my expectations and can be used to the advantage of the company.

Initial Ideas Branding Image I need to create a branding image as one of my projects outcomes. Like I mentioned in the C.I. development, I have used some of the initial ideas for the C.I. that were more suited as ideas for the branding image due to the name and not meeting the specification of the C.I. The data that I've collected on people's opinions of the available ideas clearly shows that the two favourite ideas were 'REWIND' and 'ONE'. I have decided to continue to develop 'REWIND' as, like the specification mentions, it related best to an interest of my target audience, music. I will try and manipulate this idea of music to also achieve a 'retro' look on my outcome.

Development 1 Branding Image. font Now that I've got a basic shape and name for my branding image I need to decide on a font that will suit it. Ideally the font will need to have very straight and sharp edges to compliment the two triangles at the back of the image. Below is a graph to represent a survey I carried out with fellow students to determine the preferred font. The pie chart shows that the three most popular fonts are numbers 3, 7 & 9. I have decided to use font number 9 because it looks authentic, clear yet unique as welll. Now that I have decided on a font I need to look at different colours of the font and determine which one would best suit my branding image I have come to the conclusion that the most best colour of font is the neon green. This is because neon green relates to old fashioned VCR players in which 'rewind' was a common function and stereotypically shows up in neon green against a black digital screen, helping me achieve my almost 'retro' look. I decided not to use the red font because it is the same colour scheme as my corporate identity, not giving the branding image a alternative and unique look.

Development 2 Branding Image. font, position & colour. Now that I've chosen an appropriate font I need to give the image a unique feature. I have decided to flip part of the text to emphasize on the name and its purpose (rewind). This letter needs to be quite central, look different when flipped but it also needs to be obvious what it is meant to be, I will use the letter 'E'. Once I have explored both options I will decide which one to pursue. I will consider different colours for the triangles in the background, this will allow the branding image to be used on a wider range of backgrounds. I will then survey fellow students and assess which of the different colours would best suit the image. I am going to carry on developing the option with the flipped 'E'' Here I will look at different possible positioning of the text I have decided to keep my original position and with the flipped E. My colleagues and I feel that it is the clearest and the best looking. The original is also the most space efficient. The graph clearly shows that the most popular options were the two grays and the black. I have decided to carry over the dark Grey because the contrast is strong but it can still be used on a range of backgrounds. Grey was also a popular colour used in the 'retro' era on electronics with digital screens (which used the neon green text), this would help me achieve my proposed retro look.

Development 3 Branding Image. Font, shape and form. testing The first option has proven to be the most popular. I also believe this is the most interesting. The different font shape has given the image individuality and concept. The only slight problem with my branding image now is that it is still quite hard to read, I am going to look at how a basic gray outline may benefit the image's look. The triangles also look pixelated around the edges, I will put an outline around these as well to make the edges seem sharper. Assessing the different font shapes, and my collected results, I have decided to pick options 3 & 5 and see how they both look on the gray triangles, from there I will make my decision. After briefly interviewing colleagues, and analysing the image, I have come to the conclusion that it looks better with the outline I will use this image as my final design. Now I have my final branding image I need to explore the how it appears over a range of sizes. The image will be seen over a range of sizes. In order for the best results the identity needs to look clear, effective and recognisable on any size, which I have shown below. I conclude that the branding image that I have finalised does meet all of my expectations and can be used successfully as part of the company.

Initial Ideas bottle Upon research I have discovered that the majority of aftershave brands base the shape of their bottle on the theme of their aftershave. However, other companies use simple shapes because they are easy to import image's onto, cheaper to manufacture and easier to package & store. Because my product is aimed at the younger market (13-18 year olds) I will have to try and make the bottle suitable for and attractive to younger people, thus incorporating teenage interests into the identity. I will also have to incorporate the C.I. and branding image onto the bottle somehow To determine which of of the ideas are the most popular and suitable to carry on and develop, I have carried out a survey. The data is illustrated on the next page.

Market Research bottle 12 The graph below illustrates the date I had collected on peoples opinion and preferences of my initial ideas. The graph shows that the most favored ideas are 6, 7 & 8. I am going to develop the most 'angular' shapes as they will best suit my branding image. The three ideas that I will develop are 6, 7 & 8. The graph below shows my results collected from asking my classmates' preferred idea. Here it is obvious that the simple rectangular shaped bottle was the most popular. This would also be the easiest to mass produce, put graphics on and package. For all these reasons I have decided to choose this idea to develop further. I am now going to explore how I would incorporate the branding image onto my bottle. I will now enhance the three images by drawing them using computer software. From there I will be able to analyse effectively how the possible bottles will suit the customer's and company's needs. The branding image here looks too small and out of proportion. I will try and stretch it to make full use of the shape and size of the bottle. I will not use this as it ruins the look of the branding image. I may change the shape and size of the identity once I have developed my idea further or add something to fill the excess space.

modeling Bottle Size shape and form This was the original shape I tried. However, the bottle seemed to large, heavy and the lid was out of proportion. This bottle seemed too small and wide and was not very practical to hold. The lid however, seemed to seem perfectly in proportion to the base. Here, I was experimenting with different possible sizes of the bottle to determine which one looked best and was the best to hold ergonomically. 'Ergonomics, also known as human factors, is the scientific discipline that seeks to understand and improve human interactions with products, equipment, environments and systems. Drawing upon human biology, psychology, engineering and design, ergonomics aims to develop and apply knowledge and techniques to optimise system performance, whilst protecting the health, safety and well-being of individuals involved. The attention of ergonomics extends across work, leisure and other aspects of our daily lives.' - This bottle was exactly what I aimed to achieve, the size was ergonomically right, the weight was fine and the lid seemed perfectly in proportion to the base, I used the dimensions of this bottle in my final design.

Development Bottle Colour Now I need to add suitable colours to the bottle. I am going to experiment with several different ideas and decide which one suits the bottle and it's aims. I now need to develop the colour of the speakers. The colour(s) need to be appropriate to compliment and fit in with the rest of the bottle White = Transparent The graph below illustrates the data collected upon asking classmates' preferred idea. It is obvious that the favourite colour combination was that of idea 1. The only negative concerning this idea is that the grey triangles on the branding image do not stand out very well on the black of the bottle. However, when I develop and make this idea the branding image will be embossed (stuck on seperately), highlighting the image, thus helping it to stand out. I have decided to use this colour combination for the development of my bottle. I feel that there is not enough relation between my bottle design and my branding image/aims. I need something to give my bottle a retro link to the 'rewind' image I will now look at how possibly adding speakers (like one of my initial ideas) and giving it the look of a 'retro stereo' will help me achieve the desired link. I will also heighten the lid for more space.i have decided that this adaptation has been successful and I will therefore develop it further 5 The graph below illustrated the results I collected regarding classmates' favoured colours of the speakers The results show that the favourite colour combination of the speakers was idea 1 (grey & green). These are also the most appropriate and best looking combination in my opinion as they balance out the use of the three colours on the bottle and emphasize the presence of the speakers on the bottle. I will therefore use these colours as the final ones on my bottle

Development This will be 21.00mm Bottle Adjustments and technical drawings This will be mm I have used computer drawing programmes to manipulate my 2D designs into a 3D model, the measurements of the bottle have also been included. Here I will add the final colours to the 3D model. Here are the measurements for the graphics that will be on my bottle. These graphics will be cut out onto 3mm thick acrylic and then fixed onto the bottle using Tensol adhesive. (All measurements shown are in millimeters). Due to lack of resources no gray acrylic. I have had to change my design. I have decided to reflect back earlier to the colour development and choose one of the proposed ideas. I have decided to progress with the given idea because it does not require any unavailable materials (the gray acrylic ). It was one of the favored ideas. The chosen bottle design now has black triangles. Also when I had cut out the circles and put them onto the bottle I decided that it looked much more effective without them. I sought the opinion of my peers and all of them agreed so I have not included the circles in the final design.

Final Development bottle 30 I have manipulated the 2D designs of my bottle into a 3D model so that I can see the overall Design. I have added a green florescence line to distinguish between the top of the bottle from the base. I am pleased with the overall outcome of the bottle, however, I have decided to remove the speakers from the design due to lack of materials and the fact that the vast majority of people asked feel the bottle looks better without. I have also added curved edges to the bottle due to health & safety and ergonomic issues. 30 Here, I have drawn how my box should look when complete with measurements. All measurements are in millimeters. Here I am confirming that my bottle is better without the speakers. I believe it looks simpler and more coordinated. However, the decision has consequences as I have lost the way my bottle relates to a 'retro' stereo system. I still believe that the layout and colours in the bottle have carried off my desired 'retro' look. This is my final bottle design.

Technical drawing 12 bottle

Initial Ideas Box The graph (left) shows the results I collected upon asking classmates' preferred ideas. It is clear that ideas 2, 4 & 5 are the most favored. I have decided to take idea 2 for further development as it has the most number of votes, will be the simplest to build and looks the most effective, this idea will also end up being very versatile.

Development 1 Box, shape and form, Colour. Here I have drawn my initial design as a 3D model using computer design programmes (2D design). However, I intent my box lid to fully overlap the base, meaning that space efficiency is maximised and the open/close contraption is strengthened. I am now going to experiment with different colours to determine which is most suitable for my box. Each colour is related to either my C.I. or branding image, Now the box lid has been enlarged, it overlaps the base more. I have changed the height, width and depth of the box so that it more suited to the shape of my bottle. I aim to lye my bottle flat in the box My product analysis shows that my box needs a unique feature, something that will make it look classy and stand out against other boxes. I also want to use the box to show off my bottle, this would also make my box different to others, It seems adding a window to it would be the perfect solution. The window I have inserted is roughly in proportion to the size it will need to be to correctly the box contents. I will draw up more detailed models later on in the development. It's clear from the graph that the most favored colour of box was the black. This colour is also the easiest to get hold of, and the most versatile, for these reasons I am going to choose this colour as the base colour of my box. I will use black vinyl to cover the box as it is the only material available. This is not such an issue as the shine on the vinyl will match that of the bottle. The only negative with using vinyl that is is very difficult to use precisely and may create air bubbles on the box, I will therefore need to take great care when using it.

Development 2 Box Size Here, I was experimenting with box sizes and trying to determine if my net for the box was correct. The furthest box was too small for my bottle, the score marks weren't deep enough, therefore the folds weren't sharp enough and the tabs on the net were not big enough, meaning the box was insecure. When I designed the net for the second box I increased the size by 1cm either side, meaning there was space for the inner of the box, I also increased the the size of the tabs and deepened the score marks. I then added the window to the box, I used 12 sheet card at this stage as this would be the final box. To add the window I cut out a hole in the center of the box with the dimensions of the bottle with an extra 5mm either way, this would make sure that the window allowed the whole of the bottle to be on show. This time I used gummed parcel tape to stick the box together as it was more suited to the thicker card than sellotape and meant I could use more versatile graphics on the box. Designing the correct inner for the box was a long process. The first protective inner (top left) was too small, vulnerable and didn't fit the box. I then readjusted the net of the inner and produced the second inner. This was the correct size but did not hold the bottle in place. I therefore designed a base for the inner (bottom left), this was the right size but the scores were not deep enough. I then glued the finished top and base of the inner together and covered it in green silk (bottom right). I believe that the most appropriate colour for the inside of the box is the fluorescent green, similar to that of the branding image and bottle. I feel that this will compliment the black bottle that will be inside it better than any other colours in the branding image or C.I. This also keeps the use of colours to a minimum. The box will match the bottle perfectly and will help the image of my overall outcomes, my specification mentions that my box should match my bottle well, I feel that this will be the best way of satisfying this need. This photo was taken when I was just confirming that the inner fitted inside the inner securely with space to add the silk cover and vinyl.

What Went Well? I feel that overall my project was a huge success. I learned a great deal about graphic products and how to promote products effectively. The most enjoyable part of the project for me was seeing my outcomes develop over time. I believe that all of my outcomes turned out to be exactly how I had initially wanted. I especially liked how the minimal use of colours complimented the look of my outcomes perfectly. The box matched the bottle and they were easily identifiable as a pair. I also appreciated how I managed to achieve my 'retro' look and base my outcomes on an interest of my target audience as well as achieving a luxurious look. The way that all my outcomes had a unique look about them was very positive, I appreciate how each outcome would stand out against similar products but were still practical for production, protection, preservation, display and transportation. I feel that on all my outcomes I took great consideration over cultural issues and using recyclable materials wherever possible. I found that all of the computer programmes used (GIMP, 2D Design), were all very beneficial and easy to use. What Didn't Go So Well? There were a few negative points about my project. One large point was that I was told on several occasions that my bottle was not as ergonomically designed as it could have been and was quite hard to hold. The bottle was also not as sturdy as I had hoped as the lid does not fit quite with the base. My specification mentioned that my C.I. must appear on all outcomes, however it only appeared on the box as I felt it would not suit the bottle. The other only slightly negative point was the fact that the text on my branding image is perhaps not as clear as I had desired, yet it is still readable and compliments the idea of the branding image well. I found that the most difficult part of the course was getting all the paperwork together, purely because it was so tedious having to record all the ideas, developments and having to write down why you were making decisions all the time. How I Overcame Certain Problems I encountered several problems during my project and did all I could to overcome each one. The first problem that I encountered was when I was designing my bottle, I had initially designed to use grey acrylic for the lid of the bottle, however there was none in stock. I therefore had to change my design to a previous idea but I believe it turned out for the better. The second problem I had encountered was also in the design of the bottle. The bottle was originally going to be a basic rectangle but the sharp edges conflicted with the safety legislation's, I therefore curved the edges. The last problem I had to overcome appeared when I was putting the graphics onto my box. I had originally printed the graphics onto clear assitate. However, none of the graphics were visible against the shiny black of the box due to the poor print job on the vinyl.. I then decided to print the graphics onto white vinyl whilst printing on top of a black background, this meant I lost some of the effect, but this information on the box was vital. Conclusion To conclude, I feel that the positives that came from this project strongly out-weighed the negatives. I am glad that I have the opportunity to take part in such a educationally beneficial project. What Would I Change? Given the chance to repeat the project there would be a few things I would change to perfect my project, the first being that I would spend more time exploring the idea of ergonomics. I would also look at making my bottle more sturdy, perhaps by looking into the open/close mechanism in much more detail. I would perhaps spend more time looking at how cultural and environmental issues may affect my outcomes as well as doing more research into safety regulations.
