Our production Manager has asked how we ever coped before the Horizon came in, and that says it all for me. Previously when there were smaller jobs our team would be concerned about setting up or interrupting a long run on our larger machines. Now they can get it completed and out the door straight away. In some instances the small jobs are in and out in a couple of hours and I love that. We will now happily quote for smaller run work. We have got a really good mix of clients, from advertising agencies to marketing companies and direct end users. Not one is more than 7% of turnover. For them we are having to meet tighter and tighter deadlines with shorter and shorter runs. Work was being produced and then put on the guillotine, then the large folding machine and then our stitching line. This was all very time consuming in particular on smaller jobs the SPF/FC200A handles the whole process in one pass. The quality is great. The big surprise was the quality of the work this little Horizon achieves when compared to systems that cost much, much more. We also liked the fact it can handle both litho and digital print, without the usual marking problems you sometimes get. 5 DOUBLE UP INVESTMENT HORIZON StitchLiner 5500 LAYFLAT TAKE OFF HORIZON AFC-564A Chesterfield firm Whittington Moor is to double booklet and brochure production capacity following the installation of a Horizon StitchLiner from IFS. Explains Paul Gamble who recently headed a management buy-in of the 80-year old business: We had an old Horizon SPF/FC-20A but were sending out production of 40 page booklets and that was costing as much as 3,000 per month. It was time to upgrade the system and it made sense to bring some processes in house to make us more profitable and retain greater control on turnaround times. The fact it takes a flat sheet and stitch, folds and trims in one pass makes for much smoother and faster production. A lot of what we did before had to be collated on one tower and that was very time consuming. It will double our capacity, reduce our outsourcing costs and as a result we expect return on investment in 15 months. The main thing is we don t have to fold everything separately with the StitchLiner Also whereas before we would have to trim the top and bottom we don t have to now and that has resulted in a significant reduction in guillotining. That has reduced our manpower and turnaround times. London trade print finisher and book binder Cliftons has completed an 800,000 investment programme supporting its expansion into layflat and PUR binding with a B2 Horizon AFC-566FA. Explains Tim Clifton managing director that specialises in short to medium run PUR, casebound and layflat books: We looked at layflat binding, that shows off great panoramic views about five or six years ago but at the time the market wasn t ready. In the last 18 months we have been pushing the layflat product quite hard and now it has really taken off. Layflat has added about 350,000 to our turnover last year and we expect that growth continue by 10% to 12% year-on-year. Our existing Horizon folder was 13 years old and we were very happy with it but it was time to swap it out. The AFC-564A has helped us to further streamline throughput and increased production 20% to 25% due to make ready and consistent running speeds. We also had a demo on the Perfecta 115 guillotine and its functionality backgauge and knife speed along with knife change option were better and faster than the Polar 137. We can also be faster which means we will be able to increase capacity. We got an about the new addition to the product range and it just came at the right time. Before we were hand cutting on a guillotine and drilling holes. The RD-4055 offered greater flexibility. We can now make dies to suit orders and we can be more creative with those dies. DG3 UK Director Barry Page explains the investment fits with corporate strategy: We are continually reviewing our business models in search of improvements to productivity and efficiency because if you stand still, you are going backwards, he says adding: Automation reduces the level of skill needed to operate the folder, thus expanding the pool of staff that can be assigned to it and making life easier for production workflow and peak capacity times. The investment equates to a 200% increase in capacity. The Horizon AFC-746F B1 folder tackles the issue of coping with shorter run jobs that are needed immediately without building vast amounts of redundant capacity into the operation. Our extremely pressurised production windows, particularly at night, have been made more manageable due to the speed, durability and full automation of this particular machine. Our staff were used to German engineering, so the task of keeping them on board with the Horizon buy was important. Ultimately, though, they made the decision to buy. The level of automation means the folder is equally at home producing 8pp, 16pp or 32pp sections thanks to an additional mobile knife unit, as it is coping with short run work. The PX-56 pressing and stacking unit at delivery makes single-man operation possible. We like the way it recalibrates itself every time it is switched on, meaning that the pressures between rollers remain constant, compensating for any wear and delivering more up time. The one-minute make readies, mean that we can be confident about lifting a long run job to slip in an urgent shorter job before returning to the original work. The only other way to cope would be to have two or possibly three more folders.
