Tourism/travel statistics and modes: Presentations (and paper) to Eurostat travel workshop (06/2012)and tourism statistics working group (09/2012) Aim: initiate discussion Very fruitful comments + suggestions from compilers and UNWTO Revised version of paper and presentation for 11th Global Forum on Tourism Statistics on November

4 Modes of supply: a way forward Eurostat, OECD, WTO proposals: since 2011 Two papers: 1. Identifying services values according to modes with phased approach 2. How tourism statistics can help to respond to trade in services information needs Country examples, Case study suggestions: in collaboration with authors Positive feedback, volunteering countries 4

Mode 2: Value of services trade (travel in BOP or international tourism expenditure/consumption) AND number of persons / number of trips Mode 4: Number of persons / number of trips NOT the value of services trade Importance of cooperation between agencies (i.e. BoP, trade in services, tourism compilers etc.) 5

7 A way forward - Value Case Study 4 Developing more detailed mode 2 estimates, breaking down travel by type of product and linking to tourism statistics More details on what is consumed Alternative breakdown of travel, tourism expenditure Tourism/travel surveys: questions on amount spent by type of product consumed relevant? Common data sources with tourism statistics (taking into account different concepts/definitions) Going further (education, health, cultural services) 7

8 A way forward Number of Persons (or trips) using tourism statistics How to get mode 2 number of persons/trips? Data already there, derived from existing surveys Information on flows (stocks) on mode 2 by adding supplementary detail to existing questionnaires (Frontier survey in tourism/travel; household surveys) How to get mode 4 number of persons/trips? Collecting the number of natural persons within tourism (or migration) statistical framework Exploit the subcategory for business and professional category for purpose of a trip Information on flows (stocks) on mode 4 by adding supplementary detail to existing questionnaires (Frontier survey in tourism/travel; household surveys) 8

9 Questions 1) How tourism/travel could help to obtain data by modes of supply? 2) Is it possible to add additional questions (sub-questions) in the existing tourism/travel questionnaires? 3) Could mode 4=number of persons be obtained from the existing surveys by using filter variables for the already existing physical indicators in tourism statistics? 4) How detailed information could be obtained for mode 2 (using data from the TSA)? Or adding some sub-items in the existing surveys? 5) Is there a legal basis to a) exchange data b) access administrative data within the national statistical authorities and other instutitions in charge for tourism/travel?
