K Prasanthi Asst. Professor, Civil Engineering Department, K L University, India ABSTRACT The durability behavior of coir fiber is determined in fly ash based geopolymer concrete. Before using in geopolymer concrete coir fiber is treated with rubber latex solution. A Coir fiber of a length of 25mm with various percentages i..e.., 0%, 0.75%, 1.5%, 2.25%, 3% are used. The combination of Na 2 SiO 3 & NaOH solution was used in the process of geopolymerisation. Binding agent to fly ash ratio is The molarity of 10M &12M (Molars) are used. Coir fiber which is acting as reinforcement added to resist the micro cracks. So this can be applicable where the requirement to resist the micro cracks. Key words: Fly ash, Rubber Latex, NaOH, Na 2 SiO 3, Coir fiber. In 1978 Geo-polymer was introduced, to explain about the mineral binders with alkaline. Geo-polymer has two constituents they are basic materials & alkaline liquids. The basic materials are high in Si & Al. Fly ash constitutes of high amount of glassy silica and alumina materials, it has high cementations property, and fly ash is by-product of coal that is available in thermal power plants. The life of structure is increased by using bond fiber polymer composites on to the structure. By this the tensile strength and the toughness of the structure increases and it improves deformation characteristics and minimizes the editor@iaeme.com

2 P A N V L NarasimhaSwamy, U.VenuGopal and K Prasanthi cracking effect of the structure. When these fiber composites are Strength Characteristics of Fly Ash Based Geopolymer Concrete with 14 Molar NaOH Activator exposed to marine environment they are suffering from degradation because of surface blistering. Due to this degradation the adhesive bond strength is reduced and delamination about composites occurs. A further way is to restore steel bars by means of fibers to create a fiber reinforced concrete (FRC).This type of concrete improves the non-reinforced concrete properties which is highly brittle. Growth of natural fiber material recently started. These fibers have high in impact strength but have moderate flexural and tensile properties and these are Eco-friendly materials. Utilizing of coir fiber as low cost building materials is to be increased. The presence of fiber improves the ductility of mix, tensile and flexural strengths of mix, fracture roughness. Natural rubber latex is used for the treatment of coir fiber. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to determine the durability behavior of coir fiber as a substitute of reinforcement in fly ash based giopolymer concrete. MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY Fly ash The combustion of powdered coal which results the residue of finely divided particle is known as fly ash. The combination of oxides of Ca, Al, Si, Fe are the chemical compositions, where the percentage of Titanium, Sodium, and Magnesium, Potassium, Sulphur are present in lesser amount. Fly ash is preferred is class-f as shown in below FLYASH Alkaline Liquids For Geo-polymer concrete the mixture of NaOH and Na 2 SiO 3 is used. In polymerization process alkaline liquid plays a key role. To prepare NaOH concentration, flakes are allowed to dissolve in distilled water. For preparation of 10M &12M of NaOH concentration, 10x40 = 400grams & 12x40=480grams of flakes per liter is used in the solution, hear 40 is the molecular weight of NaOH. Coarse aggregates The coarse aggregate which passing the sieve of 20 mm was used for this work Fine aggregates The fine sand which is passing through 4.75 mm was used in this work. Coconut Fiber Coir fiber is that which is extracted from coconut outer shell. Coir fiber of 25mm is taken in this work and various percentages of 0%, 0.75%, 1.5%, 2.25%, 3% is used for this research editor@iaeme.com

3 Experimental Study on Coir Fibre Reinforced Flyash Based Geopolymer Concrete With 12m & 10m Molar Activator coir Fiber Metakaolin The Metakaolin is used for the investigation. In powder content 20% of metakaolin is used for the setting of concrete. Latex Rubber Latex is a polymer of micro particles in an aqueous medium. It is either in natural or in synthetic form. Latex in nature is milky fluid. Latex consists tannins, sugars, gums, alkaloids, oils, proteins, resins, and starches that coagulate on exposure to air. Naturally available latex is white, but in some plants latex is scarlet latex, orange or yellow. Rubber Latex Acids The tests are done in acids.the acid which used in the experimental work is sulphuric acid(h 2 SO 4 ) here we need 2.5liters of acid in the work. Method The binder in geo-polymer concrete is fly-ash. Fly-ash binds the coarse aggregate, fine aggregate to form geo-polymerization. Coir dust and pith is to be separated from coir fiber and 25mm of length to be considered. The chopped coir fiber is soaked in solution which is prepared by combination of water and sodium hydroxide. For the preparation of soaking solution for one liter of water we have added sodium hydroxide of 5%. This soaking is allowed for 48 hours so that the coir fiber is to mercerization. After 48hrs coir fiber is washed repeatedly with distilled water and allowed to dry for 24hrs. Now the coir is soaked in latex compound which is combination of 70% of rubber latex, 10% of NaOH solution and 20% of distilled water for 15min and dried for 24hrs. In this research 20% of metakaolin is added to the amount of powder content for the purpose of one day setting only not for strength parameters. 5 Experimental Study on Coir Fibre Reinforced Flyash Based Geopolymer Concrete With 12m & 10m Molar Activator COMPOSITE PREPARATION Treatement of coir fiber The Coir dust and pith is to be separated from coir fiber and 25mm of length to be considered. The chopped coir fiber is soaked in solution which is prepared by combination of water and sodium hydroxide. For the preparation of soaking solution for one liter of water we have added sodium hydroxide of 5%. This soaking is allowed for 24 hours so that the coir fiber is to mercerization. Preparation of Alkaline solutions Strength Characteristics of Fly Ash Based Giopolymer Concrete with 10M &12M Molar NaOH. Activator Polymerization is formed by the mixing of Na 2 SiO 3 and NaOH. Sodium hydroxide is in the form of flakes. To form 10M&12M, the sodium hydroxide flakes of 400g& 480g are dissolved in distilled water for required concentration. During the formation of concentration it liberates large amount of heat. To form polymerization the mixed sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide are allowed to keep at room temperature for minimum of 24hrs. This mixed solution acts as a binding agent. Preparing of acid solution: 2% of H 2 SO 4 is mixed with one liter of water Mixing, Cast & Curing The Na 2 SiO 3 and NaOH are mixed one day before to get polymerization which is perfectly suitable as the binding agent. The quantity of the material is taken form the table5.1.1 for mm 2.All the materials are mixed manually. Fly ash and aggregate are mixed and then binding agent is added with small amounts. Now the treated fibers are added to the mixture with the slow increment and mixing is done thoroughly. For compressive test cube specimens of 150x150x150mm. Curing is done under ambient conditions. Place the cubes for 15 days in the acids solutions. Results& Discussion After complication of curing period, remove the cubes from the acids and place the cubes in the CTM and apply the load, at breakage point the compressive strength for 10M and 12M molarity are to be take. CONCLUSION 1. The propagation of micro cracks are to be resisted 2. The strength of specimens due to Sulphuric acid of coir fiber in percentage of 2.25% is high in this research. 3. When increase in the percentage of coir fiber the strength parameters are also increase up to optimum point and from there the strength is decreases.
