3 Project Details Project Title Keywords EUREKA - EUROSTARS Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic for Light Weight Automotive Component Light weight, Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic, Compression Moulding, Composite Chassis Describe your project: In recent years, fibre reinforced thermoplastic has been getting the attention of automotive industries because of their high strength behaviour, recycling advantages, environmental friendly specification and weight reduction potentials. Although reinforced thermoplastics have superior properties, there are difficulties and missing knowledge on design, simulation, formability, joining, limit their usage on some specific products which has complex shapes and on fatigue expected components such as chassis components in automotive industry. Aim of proposed project is to investigate of formability, structural and fatigue performance of reinforced continuous carbon fibre thermoplastics on a specific automobile structural part to replace present steel component in order to obtain weight reduction. During projects, part to be replaced with composite one will be selected. Alternative design that suitable composite production will be performed. Production method will be evaluated and defined. After material selection, material characterisation, finite element analysis for structural expectations and formability will be performed.after prototype production, alternative joining methodologies will be studied. After all component test completion, all related performance tests on the assembly will be performed. Describe the innovative part of your project: Performance of thermoplastics materials in terms of stiffness and fatigue is not well known in automotive industry at the moment. In this project, a special thermoplastic material will be used which has high level fatigue and stiffness specification. Part design will be created according to extreme specification of reinforced continuous carbon fibre thermoplastics. Linear, nonlinear and fatigue simulation will be performed to optimize the design. After prototype production, new generation joining technics will be tried on metal-composite joining. Stiffness and fatigue tests will be completed and researches will be made to ensure correlation between, simulation and real tests. Describe the market expectations of your project: In recent years, automotive industry has been focused on weight reduction activities in order to reduce fuel consumption and environmental problems. Regulation is especially obligatory for the OEMs. Using of advanced high level strength steels in car bodywork has been increased remarkably. AHSS is generally used in the automotive industry in order to reduce the weight. But it is seen that, it must be alternative materials to reach the targets. The most suitable material is thermoplastic because of their high strength behaviour, recycling advantages and environmental friendly specification for automotive industry. 3/5

4 Our aim is using new generation thermoplastic materials on a specific automotive component to ensure light chassis component with high stiffness and fatigue specification. General marker expectations are weight reduction on chassis components, zero emission, recycling and environmental materials lightweight materials.
