2 1. General information The Wepuran casting compounds of the series VU 4453 are solvent-free, highly elastic 2-pack casting compounds based on polyurethane resin that already cure at room temperature. All symbols that are used in this technical data sheet and on our containers, such as explained on our website in the section Service Symbols on labels., are 2. Application The Wepuran casting compounds of the series VU 4453 are electrically insulating, protect against corrosion caused by climatic and moisture influences as well as against mechanical attack and are temperature resistant up to 90 C [194 F]. They were especially developed for the electronics/electrical engineering industries and are used to encapsulate, embed or cast electronic components and assemblies. On account of their high elasticity and very low volume and shrinkage pressure, the Wepuran casting compounds of the series VU 4453 are particularly suitable for high-quality, temperature- and shocksensitive electronic components (e. g. sensors, glass diodes, ferrite cores, etc.) due to the low heat development during curing and the fact that their elasticity in operation means that material tension resulting from temperature changes is reduced. Further applications are possible such as: Components for sensor technology, opto- and automotive electronics Heat sensors, heating elements, cup capacitors, mini and print transformers, cables and cableend connections Ignition, induction and transformer coils TV picture tubes (implosion protection) Batteries and accumulator cases High voltage cascades and cables for TV technology HF parts, e.g. high frequency coils, interference filters. 3. Special notes The Wepuran casting compounds of the series VU 4453 are particularly distinguished by a high flexibility and elasticity (Index HE = highly elastic) and very low shrinkage pressure after curing and thus can replace the considerably more expensive silicone-rubber casting compounds in many applications if a high elasticity (e. g. sensor technology), but not a high temperature stability is required. The Wepuran casting compounds of the series VU 4453 can be used in a temperature range of -40 up to +90 C [-40 up to 194 F], while at the lower and upper ends of this range the performance and reliability of the material can be negatively affected in some applications. In these cases additional pre-trials and tests are required. Furthermore, the Wepuran casting compounds of the series VU 4453 are distinguished by an extremely low water absorption and good flowability; especially the low viscosity adjustments (Index NV) therefore are suitable to cast component geometries that are difficult to access. Moreover,, and offer a longer pot life (Index LT). is ideally suitable for dispenser application; on account of its thixotropic adjustment (Index T) there is virtually no running out of cable ducts, terminals, etc. after casting. VU 4453/71 SHE is very highly elastic (Index SHE). VU 4453/101 WR is distinguished by exceptionally high water and hydrolytic resistance (WR = water resistant), good adhesion to non-ferric metals and high mechanical resistance and thus is especially suitable for use under water. 2
3 Besides the Wepuran casting compounds of the series VU 4453 a whole range of casting compounds based on polyurethane resin, epoxy resin and silicone-rubber in various colour, viscosity and elasticity adjustments as well as with self-extinguishing properties (UL registered) are available. For exceptionally high demands on temperature stability a number of silicone-rubber casting compounds are available that meet the thermal class 200 = 200 C [392 F]. Special technical reports for these products are available upon request. In our report manual these reports are filed under group 3 and 4. On our report manual CD you will find technical reports in the Product section. 4. Safety recommendations! Please read our material safety data sheet according to directive 1991/155/EEC where you will find detailed specifications of safety precautions, environmental protection, waste disposal, storage, handling, transport as well as other characteristics.! When using chemicals, the common precautions should be carefully noted. 5. 6 Since the many different permutations make it impossible to evaluate the whole spectrum (parameters, reactions with materials used, chemical processes and machines) of processes and subsequent processes in all their variations, the parameters we recommend are to be viewed as guidelines only. We advise you to determine the exact process limitations within your production environment, in particular as regards compatibility with your specific follow-up processes, in order to ensure a stable fabrication process and products of the highest possible quality. The specified product data is based upon standard processing/test conditions of the mentioned norms and must be verified observing suitable test conditions on processed printed circuit boards. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or for a consultation with our application technology department. 7.1 Mixing The index behind the oblique indicates the mixing ratio of the resin component A with the hardener component B in parts by weight. The components are mixed in the following ratios: VU 4403/61 HE VU 4453/71 SHE Parts by weight Component A : Component B 4 : 1 6 : 1 7 : 1 VU 4453/101 WR 10 : 1 The two components (resin component A and hardener component B) are already packed in the correct mixing ratio. The volume of the container of component A is sufficient to accommodate the total quantity of component B.! Mix both components in the indicated mixing ratio (see also item 7.4 "Manual Processing"). For mixing we recommend using mechanical stirring equipment. Our Technical Information sheet TI 15/10: Processing of 2-pack systems gives detailed advice on correct mixing. In our report manual, the Technical Information sheet TI 15/10 is filed under group 15. On our report manual CD and on our website you will find Technical Information sheets in the Service section. In order to avoid penetration of moisture as far as possible seal opened containers carefully after use. Use up opened containers as soon as possible. 7.2 Viscosity adjustment The Wepuran casting compounds of the series VU 4453 are processed in the condition supplied. Do not add solvents or thinners to reduce the viscosity. 6
7 7.3 Auxiliary products Accelerator B 4401 The pre- and final curing time as well as the processing time is reduced by adding accelerator B Due to this fact it should only be used in case of processing by means of mixing and dispensing units. The accelerator is stirred into component A and then component B is added. Sealing mastic EH For the sealing of casting moulds and for cable outlets, we recommend our sealing mastic EH , which is solvent-free, self-adhesive, permelastic, easily deformable and highly temperature-resistant. Mould release agent EH Polyurethane resins adhere well to almost all substrates. In order to be able to remove the casting compound from the mould after curing, the surfaces of the components to be casted must be pretreated with the mould release agent EH EH is solvent-, siliconeand grease-free. Cleaning agent R For cleaning work place and tools, we recommend using our cleaning agent R Cleaning should take place immediately after processing, as cleaning becomes increasingly difficult the further the curing process progresses and is impossible after complete curing. Do not use cleaning agent as a thinner or for washing hands since solvents remove the natural grease from skin. Special technical reports for these products are available on request. In our report manual, these technical reports are filed under groups 4 and Manual processing! Choose compound quantity only as large as can be processed within pot life (see item 5 Characteristics ). Viscosity increases extremely in this time period so that after this time period casting compound can no longer be processed.! While mixing ensure that no air is stirred in since air inclusions influence final properties of casting compound.! Mix components A and B thoroughly.! In order to remove possible air inclusions, evacuate casting compound, if possible, before or after potting. 7.5 Mechanical processing When using mixing and dispensing equipment the pot life is irrelevant. For volumetric mixing and dispensing equipment:! Since the mixing ratio is indicated in parts by weight, the corresponding quantities to be dispensed must be converted with the help of the specific gravities of component A and component B. Note that the values indicated in item 5 are valid for a temperature of 20 C [68 F]. Reliable manufacturers of such equipment can be named upon request. 8. Drying/Curing The casting compound is cured after approx. 24 hours to such an extent that it is no more liquid or sticky and the item can be processed. However, the final hardness only is attained after 14 days. Curing can be accelerated considerably by applying heat. However, when choosing the temperature, the heat-sensitivity of the item in question must be taken into account. The following specifications for a quantity of 25 g serve as a guidline: 7
8 Room temperature (18-23 C [ F]) 80 C [176 F] 125 C [257 F] Tack-free 24 h 1 h 20 min Final hardness 14 days 6 h 3.5 h 9.
