2 resins There is an increasing requirement for safety regulations and safety standards in sites where fire is a potential threat. Von Roll has specifically developed a range of resins to provide protection against the hazards of fire and smoke, eliminating dense or toxic smoke. This range of resins consists of a set of bi-component polyurethane or epoxy resins which facilitates the coating, encapsulation and protection of predominantly electric or electronic elements against heat, moisture and chemical agents. Glossary Density Ratio of the volumetric mass of the resin to the volumetric mass of water. Viscosity Resistance of the resin to its flow before solid state. The higher this value is, the more difficult it is to cast. Gel time Time needed for the resin to turn into an uncastable state. Shore hardness Resistance to penetration on a scale of 1 to 100. The higher this value is, the more rigid the resin is. Moisture pick-up The rate at which the resin absorbs water. Auto-extinguishability Capacity of the resin to not propagate flame (see standard UL94). Oxygen index Oxygen rate necessary for combustion. The higher this rate is, the more resistant the resin is to combustion. Range of use Range of temperatures at which the resin will undergo any major change or deterioration in its behaviour. Thermal conductivity Capacity of the resin to conduct heat. The higher this value is, the less the insulation. Glass transition temperature Temperature below which the resin passes from a soft and flexible state to a solid state. Elongation Rate of elongation before a rupture is caused in the resin. Tensile strength Force required to cause a rupture in the resin. Dielectric rigidity Voltage required to cause the insulation of the resin to fail. Permittivity Response of the resin to an electric field. The higher this value is, the higher the capacity of the condenser using this resin.

5 Certifications AUTO-EXTINGUISHABILITY CERTIFICATION UL 94 Based in the United States, Underwriters Laboratories Inc is a world wide renowned specialist in conformity evaluation systems. The UL 94 test compares plastics for their level of inflammability. It gives an indication of how quickly fire can propagate and how easy or difficult it is to extinguish. There are 12 classifications of flame indicated in the UL 94 that can be assigned to test materials based on the results of tests using small sizes of flame. The V0 index means that the fire stops propagating in less than 10 seconds in a vertical position without causing the plastic to drip. It is the highest index of fire resistance. FIRE RESISTANCE AND SMOKE CLASSIFICATION CERTIFICATION NF F16.101/2 The NF F certification provides a method of classification and comparison of non metallic materials for railway rolling stock with respect to their behaviour in fire. The certification deals with : Materials combustion Density and toxicity of smoke Each resin receives a I (or M)/F classification. This corresponds respectively to the index of inflammability and smoke on a scale of 0 to 5 (0 corresponds to the best performance). The I3 index corresponds to an oxygen index necessary for combustion of over 28%, and auto-extinguishability at 850 C. The F0 and F1 indices correspond to the lowest toxicity and density of smoke. These indices guarantee optimal safety in the event of fire, not only for the sake of visibility during an evacuation but also for human health.
