Risk Assessment In 1995 the European Union commissioned an independent risk assessment on the lifecycle of cadmium pigments. The thorough scientific assessment of the risks was completed in 1998 and concluded that emissions from the cadmium pigment lifecycle do not pose any significant risk to man or to the environment. Complementing our US Mapico products we offer our Ferroxide range of Yellow, Red and Black precipitated pigments with excellent batch to batch consistency and performance across a wide range of applications. Yellow Iron Oxides: A range of standard types for cost effective formulating or micronised types for easier dispersion. A heat stable grade, Ferroxide Yellow 52 is also offered as part of this range. Orange and Red Micronised Oxides: A wide spectrum of products from the unique Orange grades through Reds to Maroons, all with high tinting strength, high chroma and excellent dispersibility. Products in the orange area are ideally suited for partial organic pigment replacement in particular shades: this provides the added benefits of fortifying opacity, enhancing durability and reducing the total pigmentation cost. 14 High Purity Speciality In addition to the standard range of synthetic Ferroxide Iron Oxide products Rockwood are able to offer High Purity grades where the level of heavy metals are controlled to exacting limits of compliance. These products meet the demands of a wide range of applications and international specifications. Rockwood have manufacturing sites in Turin, Italy and St. Louis USA for the manufacture of High Purity Iron Oxide products. By careful selection and control of raw materials coupled with excellent process control we are able to supply certificated compliant materials. The products are distributed on a worldwide basis through our direct sales offices and support agents. Excellent sales and technical backup is provided from our sites around the world. Properties All products are compliant to E172 as specified in the EC directive 95/45/CE. They also meet the FDA requirements 21.CFR73.200, and as well as USP-NF and JPE. 17 Natural Earth Umbers & Siennas Natural Earth or Umber and Sienna pigments provide an interesting range of colours from yellow through brown to red and grey. The base materials are found as naturally occurring deposits and are generally referred to as Raw Umber or Raw Sienna. Upon calcination they undergo a colour change to produce deeper shades known as Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna. Being naturally occurring their colour can vary depending on the chemical composition, degree of calcination as well as mining location. Chemical Composition The pigmentary portion is based on oxides of iron in the form of Hematite or Goethite. The remaining composition consists of varying levels of Manganese Oxides, Alumina and Silica. The iron oxide content can be between 30 and 75% depending on the individual product. Products A range of standard and micronised Umbers are available with the micronised types being the preferred selection for the coatings user. A Raw and Burnt Sienna complete the range. Uses As these materials are semitransparent they find use in artist paints and woodstains. In the case of woodstains their UV absorbing properties protect the wood from degradation by harmful UV rays. 26 Trans-Oxide Trans-Oxide Rockwood is a global leader in the technology and manufacture of high performance transparent iron oxide pigments. Supplying products to meet the requirements of the automotive, wood coatings, industrial coatings, artists colours and cosmetics industries. The Trans-Oxide Pigment Careful control of the manufacturing process of Trans-Oxide pigments produces needle shaped particles approximately 100nm (0.1 microns) in length and 10nm (0.01 microns) in width. When these particles are fully dispersed, they do not scatter light and are therefore completely transparent. The very small particle size results in high surface areas and oil absorption figures. Due to the fine particle size, high shear dispersion processes such as bead milling are necessary to achieve complete dispersions and hence exploit the full transparency of Trans-Oxide pigments. Environmental Trans-Oxide pigments are suitable as colourants for polymers in contact with food (Council & Europe AP (89)1; FDA21 CFR sec ). These pigments are not classified as hazardous under the CHIP regulations 1994 and attendant EU directives. Environmentally acceptable pigments, not classified as Special Waste. Artist Colours Trans-Oxide pigments are used increasingly as substitutes for burnt umber, raw and burnt sienna pigments due to their consistency, high transparency and natural earth colour tones. Trans-Oxide pigments exhibit excellent colour performance in both oil and water colours. Industrial Coatings Coatings containing Trans-Oxide pigments produce attractive gold and copper effects when applied over metal and can be used in both solvent and water based resin systems. 27 AUTOMOTIVE PAINTS Automotive Paints Trans-Oxide pigments are widely used in conjunction with aluminium and mica pigments to produce metallic and pearlescent finishes in both solvent and water based resin systems. Cost effective colour stylings are obtained using Trans-Oxide pigments in combination with more expensive organic pigments. Proven weatherfastness and durability, complemented by excellent UV absorption properties, ensure that the overall performance is maintained in both OEM and refinish systems. WOOD COATINGS Wood Coatings Unprotected wood undergoes degradation via a complex process involving the interaction of sunlight, water and microbial attack. The ultraviolet component of sunlight (280 to 400nm) is principally responsible for this degradation through the decomposition of the lignin in wood and resultant destruction of the cell structure. Trans-Oxide pigments are strong absorbers of UV radiation providing protection for the wood substrate whilst their colour and transparency enhances the appearance of the natural wood grain. The high durability and weatherfastness of Trans-Oxide pigments make them the natural choice for timber coatings, woodstains and furniture finishes.
