4 3M Asia Pacific Bonded Abrasive Products Introduction Bonded abrasives consist of conventional abrasive grains held together in a matrix of glass, resin, rubber or other binders. As the wheel rotates at high speed in operation and contacts the work-piece, the exposed grains begin to cut away the material. The grains would fracture continuously to expose new cutting points while the material being worked on wears away the resin bond to successively uncover fresh grains. Our Products The bonded abrasive products available from 3M are the grinding discs and cut-off wheels. Grinding Discs Cut-Off Wheels Center Hole Thickness Center Hole Thickness Diameter Dimensions: Diameter x Thickness x Center Hole Diameter Dimensions: Diameter x Thickness x Center Hole The rigid grinding disc, also know as depressed center wheel, is a durable, aggressive product for heavy-duty stock removal applications while the flexible grinding disc is a more conformable product which gives smoother finishing and lower tool vibration during use. Both the rigid and flexible grinding discs have a depressed center, which reduces the protrusion of the mounting hardware from the grinding surface of the disc, keeping it out of the grinding process, enabling the disc to be use at a shallower angle. These flat configuration depressed center discs are for use on right angle grinders. Cut-off wheels are thin, blade-like bonded abrasives design for cutting and slotting applications such as pipe and bar stock cutting, sheet metal cutting and gate removal. These wheels are to be used only on their edge and must not be used for grinding operation with the face. The smaller wheels can be used on both right angle and straight shaft grinders with the appropriate wheel guard while the large diameter wheels are for use on chop saw equipment. 5 Abrasive Grains 3M offers three types of abrasive grains for the grinding disc products: 1. Cubitron 2. White aluminum oxide 3. Aluminum oxide For the cut-off wheels, the abrasive grains available are: 1. Cubitron 2. Aluminum oxide Cubitron is the premium grain product from 3M. It is an advanced ceramic aluminum oxide mineral pioneered by 3M that offers outstanding cutting power and excellent durability. These remarkable features make the Cubitron product best suited for stainless steel applications, where it will show its great value. White aluminum oxide grains contain a very high purity of aluminum oxide with extremely low iron content. It has higher hardness and slightly lower toughness as compared to brown aluminum oxide grain. It is good for use in applications where possible contamination to the work piece cannot be tolerated, such as in stainless steel applications. Aluminum oxide (brown), the most popular of abrasive grains, excels in working high tensile materials, such as mild steel. It is great for high speed penetration of tough materials without excessive fracturing and shedding. When you see the Cubitron TM mark, you are getting a sol gel mineral (1) that sharpens as it wears. Initial grinding breaks away small edges of the grain (2). As grinding continues, micro-fractures form (3) which break off to create fresh sharp edges for continued fast cutting (4). This process repeats throughout grinding for long-term efficiency and full value for your abrasive investment. Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3 Figure 4 General Safety Guidelines Working with bonded abrasive products can be hazardous to both the operator and bystanders. Serious injury can be inflicted if a wheel is to break up during use. In addition, sparks, dust particles, heat and noise generated from the grinding/cutting operation are all potential hazards, either by direct contact or through long term exposure without the appropriate protection. Read and follow the operating instructions for all products and equipment before using/operating them. Always wear safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, face shields and other appropriate personal protective equipment when using bonded products. Check the maximum operating speed (MOS) stated on the product and make sure that the operating speed of equipment is NOT higher than the MOS. Never use product on equipment that exceed the MOS of the product. Follow all safety operating procedures posted in work areas. 2

17 3M TM Large Diameter Cut-Off Wheels Technical Recommendations for 3M Air-Powered Tools Use a clean, dry, lubricated air supply that will give a measured air pressure at the tool of 6.2 bar (90 psig) when the tool is running with the lever fully depressed. Use an approved 10 mm (3/8") or 13 mm (1/2") x 8 m (25') maximum length air line. Connect the tool to the air supply as shown in Figure 1. It is strongly recommended that an air filter, regulator and lubricator (FRL) be used as shown in Figure 1, to supply clean, lubricated air at the correct pressure to the tool. If such equipment is not used, the tool should be manually lubricated. 3M Air Tool Lubricant Used to keep pneumatic air tools running efficiently. Use 2-3 drops at the end of each day, or as needed, to maintain tool performance. Part # Size UPC fl. oz. / 188 ml To manually lubricate the tool: Disconnect the air line and put 2 to 3 drops of suitable pneumatic motor lubricating oil, such as 3M Air Tool Lubricant 20451, into the hose end (inlet) of the tool. Reconnect tool to the air supply and run tool for a few seconds to allow air to circulate the oil. Lubricate daily if the tool is used frequently or if the tool starts to slow or lose power. Tools can be run at lower pressures, but should never be run higher than 6.2 bar (90 psig). If run at a lower pressure the performance of the tool is reduced. 18 Flexible Grinding Disc and Rigid Grinding Disc Safety Guidelines WARNING! Product can BREAK APART during use and CAUSE INJURY if damaged or run too fast. ALWAYS use with proper machine safety guards. Improper use can cause product to break apart and may cause injury to operators and bystanders. Take precautions indicated below Exceeding maximum operating speed can cause product to break apart and may cause injury. Check Inspect For Damage Never EXCEED the maximum operating speed (MOS) on the product label. CHECK the maximum operating speed of the product against the tool speed. ALWAYS USE PROPER BACKUP PAD WITH THE PRODUCT! INSPECT backup pad and product, replace if damaged (cracks, nicks or wear). ALWAYS use the correct sized backup pad with the product. CHECK retainer nut for thread wear, snug fit and full three thread contact with grinder spindle. Abusive operation can cause product or backup pad to break apart and may cause injury. START grinder just off the workpiece and always ease the product onto the work. Do not jam product into sharp edges. STOP immediately if vibration or wobbling occurs during use. Determine cause and correct before continuing. OPERATE grinder with product inclined approximately 5-10 degrees from the workpiece. GRIND depressions, moldings, lips and heavy molds with the grinder moving away from the workpiece and not into it. DO NOT store or rest the grinder on the product. Sparks and particles flying off the product can injure or cause fire. REMOVE flammable materials from the work area. Use the prescribed SAFETY GUARD to deflect flying particles and sparks away from the face and body. WEAR protection for eyes, face, hands and body. Provide appropriate local exhaust. If exhaust ventilation is not adequate, wear approved dust protection to prevent inhalation of dust particles. Incorrect storage could affect safety as well as product performance. STORE product at temperatures between 15-27ºC and between 35-50% relative humidity. 15
