It is specifically designed to produce two component (2K) isocyante-free 1, polyurethane coatings when reacted with PARALID Edge XL-195 Crosslinker (1,3 & 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxaldehyde) using an acid catalyst. 2 Introduction to PARALID Edge Technology Chemistry and Benefits of PARALID Edge Isocyanate Free Polyurethane Chemistry The PARALID Edge Resins and Crosslinkers provide 2K, solvent borne, novel, isocyanatefree polyurethane coatings at ambient temperatures from the reaction of polycarbamate functional resins and polyaldehyde crosslinker using an acid catalyst (Figure 1). There is a need in many coating applications for faster drying and hardness development that can be achieved with current traditional 2K polyurethane chemistry. Typical approaches to faster dry times using isocyanate chemistry are associated with shorter formulation pot-life. The benefits observed with coatings based on the PARALID Edge products are decoupling formulation pot-life from coating dry-time and hardness development. A primary alcohol (i.e. ethanol, n-propanol) is typically used as a co-solvent to enhance the pot life of the coating formulation. The hydroxy functionality of the alcohol reacts with the aldehyde functionality of PARALID Edge XL-195 to form acetal equilibrium products. When the paint/coating is applied to a substrate the alcohol volatilizes and the aldehyde functionality of PARALID Edge XL-195 reacts with the carbamate groups of the PARALID Edge resins resulting in urethane crosslinks. As a result, fast, ambient cure without the short pot-life issues of traditional 2K polyurethane systems is achieved. In traditional 2K polyurethane coating systems, the isocyanate crosslinker can undergo irreversible side reactions with water which can be problematic during application in humid environments. An added benefit of coating formulations based on PARALID Edge Resins and Crosslinkers is they do not suffer from an irreversible reaction of the crosslinker with water. As a result, formulations can be applied under ambient conditions that lead to coatings with the benefit of fast property development. The resulting isocyanate-free polyurethane coatings have excellent mechanical properties, good chemical resistance and exceptional weatherability. Figure 1. 3 Formulating Guidelines Formulating Suggestions The two component formulations given herein are recommended for initial evaluation of PARALID Edge 2301 Resin and PARALID Edge XL-195 Crosslinker at a 1:1 stoichiometry based on carbamate and aldehyde equivalent weights. The following formulating suggestions are offered: Acid Catalysts PARALID Edge Isocyanate-Free Polyurethane Technology is acid catalyzed best with sulfonic acids, such as p-toluene sulfonic acid (p-tsa), dinonylnaphthalene sulfonic acid (DNNSA), dinonylnaphthalene disulfonic acid (DNNDSA), etc., are recommended. For direct to metal applications where corrosion protection is required, DNNSA or blends of DNNSA/p-TSA are recommended. Pigments & Filler Suggestions Pigments and fillers that are compatible with acid catalyzed systems and with a ph 8.5 are recommended. Pigments and fillers such as calcium carbonate, Wollastonite, Nepheline, Syenite and others with high ph (>8.5) are not recommended. Solvent Suggestions Solvents such as acetate esters, ketones, and glycol ether acetate esters are most effective at reducing formulation viscosity. Aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents can also be used but are not as effective at reducing formulation viscosity. Primary and secondary alcohols provide excellent viscosity reduction and are key components for extending formulation pot-life. Preferred alcohols are ethanol, n-propanol, iso-propanol, and n-butanol, while large amounts of high boiling alcohols (5 carbon or greater) should be avoided as they can slow down the rate of cure. Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers The addition of hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS), such as Tinuvin 5100 or Tinuvin 123, can enhance the weathering properties of PARALID Edge isocyanate-free polyurethane coatings. HALS that are basic should not be used. The effect on weatherability with a HALS (Tinuvin 5100) for PARALID Edge 2301 based coatings is shown in Figure 2 and compared to a traditional 2K isocyanate based polyurethane coating. 6 Handling Precautions Storage Disposal Considerations Before using this product, consult the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)/Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for details on product hazards, recommended handling precautions and product storage. Store products in tightly closed original containers at temperatures recommended on the product label. Dispose in accordance with all local, state (provincial) and federal regulations. Empty containers may contain hazardous residues. This material and its container must be disposed in a safe and legal manner. It is the user's responsibility to verify that treatment and disposal procedures comply with local, state (provincial) and federal regulations. Chemical Registration Many countries require the registration of chemicals, either imported or produced locally, prior to their commercial use.
