Lighting Testing Requirement Lighting Appliances Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) Non-integrated Type Compact Fluorescent Lamps LED Lamp Electronic Ballasts Source: 7
Lighting Testing Requirement For example, LED Testing requirement: Lamp efficacy (lumens/w) Lamp life Light Intensity Distribution Other tests, such as CRI, Lumen maintenance, power factor, luminous flux etc. 8
Lighting Testing Requirement Lamp efficacy Two integrating sphere were setup with spectrometer system and perform the test with following test method: CIE 13.3 CIE 15 CIE 18 CIE 84 CIE 97 According to following requirement: IEC/EN IEC/EN IEC/EN IEC/EN Testing Services: Energy Star, EST, ELI, MEPS, HKEELS etc 9
Lighting Testing Requirement Light distribution The Goniophotometer system were setup and suitable to measure the spatial luminous intensity distribution of lighting luminaires, according with the requirements CIE 70 /121 IEC/EN Then to analyze the luminaire photometric parameters, including: intensity distribution iso-intensity curve iso-illuminance curve luminance limitation curve effective beam angle effective luminous flux upward and downward luminous flux utilization factor luminaire efficiency etc. Testing Services: Now: Energy Star, EST, ELI, MEPS etc 10
Lighting Testing Requirement Cost Comparison Incandescent Halogen CFL LED Purchase price $ 10 $ 30 $ 30 $ 100 Electricity usage W Lumens Lumens/Watt Color Temperature Kelvin CRI Lifespan (hours) 2,000 3,500 8,000 30,000 Bulb lifetime in 8 hours/day Energy cost over 10 $1/kWh $ 1,248 $ 874 $ 270 $ 208 Total $ 1,348 $ 1,050 $ 349 $ 308 Compare between LED to Incandescent, it will have 74% (~HKD $1000) per 10 years per unit. Compare between LED to Halogen, it will have 70% (~HKD$ 960) per 10 years per unit 11
Lighting Testing Requirement LED Lightings Advantages Uses at least 75 percent less energy and lasts at least 15 times longer than an incandescent bulb. Has efficiency as good as or better than fluorescent lighting. Turns on instantly there is no warm-up time. Allows for precise placement of light due to the directional nature of LEDs. Produces far less heat than an incandescent, which can reduce air-conditioning needs. Is durable performs well outdoors and in cold temperatures. 12
Lighting Fixtures Improvement (free investment) Case Sharing According to a lighting audit result based on Code of Practice for energy efficiency of Lighting Installation Illumination value measured in Room A : 728 lux to 800 lux in general Lighting power density of the area is W/m 2 These implied energy management opportunity exist for saving energy and money Remark: 1. Optimum average illumination value required by Labor department: 500 lux for general office, 750 lux for Drawing work station. 2. According to Building energy code, maximum allowable lighting power density for office is 17W/m 2 13
Lighting Fixtures Improvement (free investment) Case Study Total Area with fixed lighting installation: m 2 Total Installed lighting power before audit: W Illumination value measured: 728 lux (min. requirement: 500) By removing 1 fluorescent tube in every luminaire: Total Installed lighting power after audit: 7728W Illumination value measured: 589 lux (min. requirement: 500) Energy saving in area: 3260W per hour (29.7% of lighting power consumption) which save around $6780 dollars per year (assume $1=1kWh) 14

Remark: Sleep mode of computer: showing computer is locked on screen Standby mode of monitor: display is off but power indicator is on 18
Others Energy Saving Approaches in using of Office Appliances Reference: Energy saving tips for office _for_office.pdf For general: 1. Switch off equipment that is not in use. 2. Avoid leaving appliances in standby mode. 3. Procure energy efficient equipment or equipments with energy label. 4. Carry out regular maintenance of equipment. 5. Notices/ Reminder stickers/ wallpaper/ education training can be applied to enhance the idea of energy saving. 19
Others Energy Saving Approaches in using of Office Appliances For Air Conditioning system 6. Turn off the AC in offices, meeting rooms, etc. right after use. 7. Clean dustfilters and fan coil units regularly. 8. For HVAC system, use a high fan speed rather than lowering the temperature setting to cater for increased cooling demand. 9. Keep temperature at 25 degree C. If feel hot, use fans to increase air circulation. 20
Others Energy Saving Approaches in using of Office Appliances For lighting system 10. Turn off light that is not in use. Affix save energy stickers near the switches as a reminder. (e.g. Lunch time) 11. Cut down the number of lamps in areas with ample daylight. 12. Make use of daylight whenever possible to reduce lighting cost. 13. Replace T12 or T8 fluorescent tube with T5. For a 1000m 2 office, an electricity cost of up to $10,000 can be saved each year. 14. Install occupancy sensors to turn off lights automatically in public areas such as corridors, toilet etc. 15. Replace conventional Exit signs with LED Exit signs and save up to $220 of electricity cost per sign each year. 16. Replace tungsten halogen spotlight lamps with compact fluorescent lamps and save up to $70 of electricity cost per 50W bulb each year. 17. Promoting policy of last person who left the area will be responsible to turn off the light. 21
Others Energy Saving Approaches in using of Office Appliances For Office equipments 18. Switch off photocopiers and printers after office hours. (Use timer to auto switch off) 19. Set the low power and Off mode default intervals to the lowest settings. 20. Follow the maintenance schedules of appliances. 21. Photocopy in batch as it can minimize energy consumption due to less frequent start. 22. Arrange the last-man-out to turn off all photocopiers and printers or use timer switches to reduce power consumption. 23. Use print preview function to check the layout and style of documents before printing. 24. Adjust the margins and font size of documents in order to optimize use of paper. (Multi-page) 25. Switch off computers after office hours or whenever they are not in use for an hour or more to reduce power consumption. 22
Others Energy Saving Approaches in using of Office Appliances For Office equipments 26. Switch off computers after office hours can save up to $600 electricity cost for each computer each year. 27. Use the power management function feature of computers to set them to sleep mode if they are not in use. 28. Avoid using screen savers as they do not save energy. 29. Enable the hibernation mode setting. 30. Reduce the brightness level of the screen to the lowest comfortable level. 31. Unplug all equipment chargers and adapters when they are not in use. 32. The energy wasted by a photocopier left in standby mode overnight is enough for making up to 700 copies of A4 size paper. 33. The power wasted by a desktop printer left in standby mode after office hours accounts for 70% of the total energy consumed by the printer. 34. Assign person to turn off equipment after working hours or periodically inspection by management team. 35. Implementation of smart sockets, automatic switch off the associated devices 23
