As the world s busiest two runway airport, reducing energy consumption at Heathrow can help us achieve our carbon reduction goal Heathrow Energy Reduction Code of Practice
Heathrow handles around 200,000 passengers every day There are approximately 400 companies onsite 76,000 members of staff & Contents 1.0 Introduction The need for this code The Heathrow Sustainability Partnership Commitment Reducing energy consumption Who needs to be energy efficient? Communication & feedback 14 About the Energy Code of Practice 15 This Heathrow Sustainability Partnership Project has been championed by World Duty Free Group
1.0 34% The Carbon reduction from fixed assets by Introduction Heathrow is the world s busiest two runway airport. Heathrow recognises it has a responsibility to manage energy use onsite. This includes a commitment to reduce fixed asset (building) related energy consumption by the airport company and its partners on Heathrow s estate and related carbon emissions. To support this commitment, Heathrow has set a target to achieve an absolute carbon reduction from fixed assets from 1990 levels by 2020 of 34%. Heathrow s CO 2 target and accompanying energy strategy was developed to: > Maximise cost savings from more efficient use of energy > Develop the resilience of the airport s own energy infrastructure, e.g. Energy Centre > Be aligned with Government policy on CO 2 reduction > Support planning applications and reputational benefits This will be achieved by: > Avoiding energy use through design choices and utilising systems installed effectively > Reducing energy consumption through the design and retrofit of energy efficient systems > Where feasible replacing traditional energy supply with low and zero carbon technologies > Optimising the use of energy through effective procurement choices and strategies Heathrow is home to over eighty airlines, serving over 180 destinations handling around 200,000 passengers every day. To support this throughput of passengers, there are approximately 400 companies onsite employing over 76,000 people. Heathrow Sustainability Partnership provides a forum for these companies to work together to deliver sustainability benefits to the site. This Code of Practice has been developed as a reminder of our commitment to proactively support the delivery of the Heathrow carbon reduction target. This Code of Practice supports this intent by recognising: > Heathrow and partner companies need to work collectively to achieve this target > Energy management benefits companies through consumption, carbon and cost savings > Everyone can do something but companies will have varying opportunities to undertake energy reduction measures // 4 // 5
The need for this code Heathrow Airport and its partner companies use a significant amount of energy to heat, cool and light their buildings and operations. 15% CO 2 emissions in Heathrow s control The Heathrow carbon footprint falls into three categories: > Emissions Heathrow can Influence (estimated at 45% of the total) > Emissions Heathrow can Guide (estimated at 40% of the total) > Emissions Heathrow can Control (estimated at 15% of the total) The energy used on airport, predominantly in the form of electricity comes under the heading of emissions Heathrow can control. The purpose of the Code of Practice is to set guidelines for partner companies to help them control their operational energy use on airport. The Code will help on-campus partners of Heathrow Airport Limited to: > Support Heathrow to achieve its target > Save energy through reduced usage > Reduce costs > Enhance the environmental reputation of Heathrow and its on-campus partners > Support partners own sustainability targets // 6 // 7
The Heathrow Sustainability Partnership Commitment Heathrow s plan to reduce energy consumption and therefore its CO 2 emissions focuses on key strategic levers: // 8 Demand: > Reducing demand from existing assets through energy efficiency measures > Reducing demand by meeting and where possible exceeding design standards for new build, refurbishment and retrofit Supply: > Increase supply of low and zero carbon heat and power generation across the estate We re seeking all Heathrow based energy consumers to adopt this Code of Practice. Heathrow Sustainability Partnership members and the Heathrow Engineering Team are available to support companies that are able to participate. Heathrow Sustainability Partnership companies will: > Commit to the principle of reducing energy use wherever possible > Track their energy consumption at Heathrow (where data is available) and investigate where energy is being used and where consumption could be reduced > Develop an energy action plan based on measures they can undertake > Calculate consumption, carbon and cost benefits > Develop an energy target based on what is achievable in their space/unit/building > Monitor and report progress via the Heathrow Sustainability Partnership meetings on progress > Collectively report on the groups contribution to Heathrow s 2020 carbon reduction target // 9
Reducing energy consumption As partner companies, our commitment to reducing energy use and our contribution to CO 2 emissions may be summarised under three headings: 1. Infrastructure Approach to capital projects 2. Fixtures & fittings Capital and operational 3. Behaviour Operational The first two of these headings should be addressed through reference to Heathrow Airport Limited Energy Efficiency Asset Standard. This Code of Practice henceforth focuses on operational behaviours. Operational Behaviours Specific measures all companies can undertake to reduce energy consumption are: > Analyse energy consumption data to identify areas of wasted energy > Switch off non-critical equipment such as lighting, computers and machines at the end of each day > Effectively use controls for lighting, heating and cooling, where in your control > Purchase energy efficient equipment and services, where in your control > Undertake or participate in staff awareness training > Celebrate success by developing and sharing case studies Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) Energy audits and assessments are the first step in understanding where energy is used, and more importantly, identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption. ESOS is a mandatory government scheme which will make energy auditing compulsory for larger companies and organisations in the UK from For more information visit: // k 17% The estimated financial saving associated with adopting more energy efficient designs within T2 retail units The estimated reduction in energy use by T2 retail units compared to T5 averages by adopting more energy efficient designs // 11
Who needs to be energy efficient? All employees of Heathrow Airport Limited and its partner companies on-campus Please adopt this code and reduce your energy consumption, costs and carbon emissions. a) Office and facility lighting practices Heathrow Airport Limited and its partners will ensure that all office and facility lighting under their control is switched off when the area is not in use, including toilets, kitchen and back of house/warehousing. b) Business unit lighting practices Where front of house or customer facing business units such as shops and restaurants are unoccupied during non-trading hours, all ceiling and fixture lighting should be powered off automatically or via last man out switches. c) Business unit heating practices Guidelines for optimal ambient temperature for comfortable working, shopping, eating or other on-airport operations within the building should be produced by partners to enable control measures to be put in place. Any free-standing heating should be removed. Agreed guidelines should be observed when setting thermostats centrally or when using manual override for short-term heating. Should employees report extremes in working, shopping, eating or other in-airport operational temperatures, they should contact their Heathrow Airport Limited Facilities contact to report and resolve. d) Business unit cooling practices Partners operating at Heathrow should work with Heathrow Airport Limited to agree on correct temperatures appropriate to their operations and this should be monitored on an ongoing basis. Any extremes as with unit heating should be reported appropriately and addressed centrally where possible. Any free-standing cooling should be removed. Agreed guidelines should be observed when setting thermostats centrally or when using manual override for short-term cooling. Should employees report extremes in working, shopping, eating or other in-airport operational temperatures, they should contact their Heathrow Airport Limited Facilities contact to report and resolve. e) Office equipment practices Heathrow Airport Limited and its partners will ensure that all office and facility equipment under their control is switched off when not in use, including computers, printers and photocopiers, and that where possible these are powered down at the end of the working day or period. Communication devices should not be left to charge unnecessarily. Any new electrical equipment should be sourced at least in part based on its energy efficiency rating. All electrical equipment should be A rated or have an approved energy efficiency kite mark. f) Fault reporting practices Faulty equipment should be reported immediately: 1. internally where the equipment or facility is under the direct management of the partner 2. to the appropriate Facilities contact at Heathrow where the equipment is under the management of Heathrow Airport Limited Temporary or portable heating or cooling devices should not be used faults with temperature control should be reported as above. // 12 // 13
Communication and feedback About the Energy Code of Practice Resources responsibleheathrow/hsp Simple Energy Action Plan Template Heathrow Energy Efficiency Asset Standard Where best practice is identified Heathrow Airport Limited will seek to share this with the wider airport community Heathrow Airport Limited will publicise companies performance of the Energy Code of Practice to members of the Heathrow Sustainability Partnership and the wider Heathrow Airport community to highlight areas of good practice, subject to agreement. Where best practice is identified, Heathrow Airport Limited will seek to share this with the wider airport community to promote continuous improvement with appropriate permissions. Heathrow Airport Limited will also seek to publicise examples of good practice and evidence of significant reductions in energy use as supporting evidence in its 2020 target, and to enhance the environmental reputation of Heathrow and its partners. Organisations that adopt the Heathrow Sustainability partnership Energy Code of Practice will be promoted through and will be able to use Heathrow Sustainability Partnership communications materials with consent. Feedback should be directed to The Energy Reduction Code of Practice has been developed by the Heathrow Sustainability Partnership, a group of 13 companies jointly committed to improving the sustainability of their business at Heathrow. The Code will be subject to periodic review. For more information on the Sustainability Partnership please visit // 14 // 15
