1 Energy Consumption in buildings is a major environmental and sustainability concern. Buildings consume 66% of the total U.S. electricity and 36% of the total U.S. primary energy use 1. This consumption is responsible for 30% of the total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions 2 such as carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), from electricity generation. These emissions pollute the air, causes climate change, have adverse effect on human health, and negative biological effect on plants and animals. Energy production is also depleting water supplies. For every 1 KWH of electricity generated, 2/3 gallon of water is consumed at the power plant. In Arizona, that s equivalent to 20,000 gallons annually per typical 1,600 ft² residence. In arid regions, where water is sparse, this limits economic development. Energy waste is also costly. The United States spends $450 Billion annually on energy consumption. Arizona spends over $9 Billion annually on primary 3 energy consumption with a 2-4% annual rate of increase. The building sector in Arizona consumes 45% of that energy. Studies show that saving 50% in energy consumption in Arizona s buildings can save the State over $2 Billion annually. It is vital in Arizona that we educate students, designers of our future buildings, and inform professionals in the building industry such as developers, builders, planners, city and state officials, utilities, and so forth, about latest techniques of sustainable and green building design. One immediate response is to create and implement a high quality interdisciplinary education program that focuses on Energy Conservation for the citizens of the state of Arizona and its constituencies. Energy education for our citizens will benefit our economy beyond the necessary enhancement of knowledge and marketability of those individuals. Our clean air and the preserved Sonoran Desert are key elements to our State s economy and tourism. To protect and grow this industry we need to protect our environment through energy conservation initiatives. The benefits to the health and well-being of both human and natural systems through the teaching and implementation of energy conservation technologies will be profound. The House Energy Doctor program is currently offering a series of "Design and Energy Conservation" courses to the University community. Recently, some of these courses are developed to be offered online. We are proposing the development of one and a half course to be offered fully online. Once completed, we will have three courses that are fully offered online, and that will allow participants to be awarded a certificate in "Design and Energy Conservation". The Online curriculum is a 9 credit 3 courses on energy conservation based on Distance-Deliverable Coursework that yields its participants with a certificate in "Design and Energy Conservation". The courses titles and descriptions are as follows: (see also 1 U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Information Administration, March 2001, Monthly Energy Review. 2 U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Information Administration, Emissions of Greenhouse Gases in the US Primary energy consumption is the total requirement for all uses of energy, including energy used in transforming one energy form to another, energy used by power plants, and energy used to transport to and used by consumer.

2 Course 1: Energy and the Environment (ARC461k/561k - Already offered Summers of ) A 3 credit fully online course that fosters awareness and thorough understanding of the qualitative and quantifiable environmental forces that contribute to the visual and thermal sensation and temperature change within the interior of buildings. The course introduces basics for understanding fundamentals of solar energy and light, daylight design, climate and microclimate factors, and principles of human thermal comfort as related to the built environment. Registration open to degree or non-degree students. Course 2: Energy Use in Buildings (ARC461l/561l - currently 50% developed) A 3credit online course that introduces the quantitative and qualitative factors that contribute to energy consumption and use in buildings. Understanding of thermodynamic and heat transfer processes and exploration of major external and internal forces acting on building envelope will be the basis of understanding energy flows and use by buildings. Topics covered include thermal characteristics of envelop construction materials, infiltration and natural ventilation, fenestration and solar gain, electric and people thermal loads, and the functioning and performance of small scale mechanical systems. Course 3: Energy Efficient Design (ARC461m/561m - to be developed) A 3 credit online course that investigates building energy performance and assessment. Energy conservation strategies such as building shape and orientation, Passive solar design, building envelope materials and components, Natural ventilation, active solar design are explored including their contribution to energy savings. The use of computer simulation will help course participants to understand the interrelationship between the different strategies as well as their cost efficiency and return on investment. The end product will be a net-zero design that reduces consumption while help sequestering greenhouse gas emission. We are requesting UA Green Fund to support the development of 50% of course 2 and 100% of course 3. In an addition to that effort, an Electronic Outreach Reference Library will be developed by the team members and offered online by the project manager to insure accessibility of the material to all citizens in the state of Arizona using state-of-the-art Information Technology such as Ask-an-Expert website. Benefits 1. Educational Benefits: The online courses will: 1) Meet the highest rating environmental concern of conserving energy in the State of Arizona, 2) Support local economy by saving the State over $2 Billion annually, 3) Serve all University students, underserved academic units, and all Arizonans, 4) High expectation for education dissemination while generating revenue to the University, and 5) Stimulate local economy by providing jobs for small business. 2. Environmental benefits: The environmental benefits can be summarized as 1) State-wide energy savings that will contribute to mitigating today s environmental problems of climate change and the urban heat island phenomenon, 2) Promote the design and construction of buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live and work in Arizona, 3) Water savings by reducing water used in generating electricity, 4) Protection of air quality and reduction of greenhouse gases.

3 3. Community Benefits: Audiences: College students in architecture and Landscape Architecture and Planning, and all underserved students from other academic programs including students from all three universities in the State of Arizona. Professionals non-related to the design and construction field (doctors, pilots, and so forth), working professionals, and layman Arizonans will all be targeted. Architecture and engineering professional organizations such as the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the American Society for Heating, Refrigerating and Airconditioning Engineering (ASHRAE) require their members to maintain certification as part of continuing education. These organizations are also willing partners in advertising the certificate program in Energy Audit and Conservation. In 2005 AIA Arizona listed more than 900 members. Another important audience is members of the City, County and State building officials in Arizona as well as K-12 teachers. For years, The House Energy Doctor held qualifying 6 environmental unit continuing education workshops for the Tucson Hogan School of Realtor. In summary, the proposed education program is unique and no other programs in the State address this important problem. Learning and practicing in Energy Conservation will help improving the State s economic conditions by saving annually $2 billion, generates jobs and small businesses, enhances human health and ecosystem integrity, saves energy and water, and preserves clean air for all Arizonans. The College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture program is nationally and internationally known for its expertise in Energy Conservation and hands-on field investigations of buildings. Neither ASU nor NAU can afford to duplicate the expertise and knowledge that is uniquely concentrated in the faculty at the UA. The projected impact of this project in terms of performance measures is the creation of a high quality education program and offered online to extend the benefit of this distinctive curriculum to all Arizonans. A certification process, the development and the implementation of three Distance- Deliverable Courses and an electronic outreach reference library will be accomplished by faculty and students from the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. As a result, a number of continuing education students and interested community professionals, who cannot be physically present, will be able to complete the program. Through diverse funding sources and in-kind services the program will sustain beyond the UA Green Fund period. Project Personnel and Involved Units College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture The project leaders are composed of Dr. Nader Chalfoun, Ph.D., LEED AP, professor of architecture and director of the graduate Master s program on Design and Energy Conservation and two graduate students from the Masters of Architecture program.
