1 Call for Papers: Journal of the Knowledge Economy in collaboration with Special Issue Paradigms and experiences of entrepreneurial universities in the regional economic development: roles, actors, practices Guest Editors Prof. Manlio Del Giudice 1 University of Rome Link Campus Rome Prof. Stefano Bresciani University of Turin Turin Prof. Rosa Lombardi University of Rome Link Campus Rome The Journal of the Knowledge Economy is abstracted/indexed in SCOPUS, EconLit, Google Scholar, ProQuest, Academic OneFile, ECONIS, Expanded Academic, OCLC, Research Papers in Economics (RePEc), SCImago, Summon by ProQuest. IF: 0.57 (Scimago, Cites per doc 2y) 1 Corresponding Guest-editor (m.delgiudice@unilink.it)
2 This Special Issue of the Journal of the Knowledge Economy has the ambitious aim to discuss an emerging interest in knowledge management: the role, the actors and the best practices in the relationships between entrepreneurial universities and the regional economic development. The importance of universities for regional economic development has been analysed from different economic perspectives in the managerial review (Carayannis and Rakhmatullin, 2014; Cheshire and Malecki, 2004). Alongside direct spending effects, universities are associated with productivity gains and innovation in existing firms, with effects on new firm formation (Trequattrini et al., 2012) and industry location choices and therefore with long-term regional growth (Carayannis et al., 2015, Goldstein and Drucker, 2006). In the classical model of the university, the main missions focus on research and teaching. Universities tend to advance universal and objective scientific knowledge. However, the modern era highlights the importance of a third mission: the economic and social promotion of knowledge produced by researchers and of knowledge transfer to private sector (Clark, B., 1998; Mueller, 2006; Straub and Del Giudice, 2012). There are many aspects of entrepreneurial universities, which need to be discussed, such as the management and organization, the reconsideration of relationships with their stakeholders, the improvement of entrepreneurship education programmes (Del Giudice et al., 2013). The current university situation and economic context reveal that these institutions need to develop a more entrepreneurial attitude and culture and should pay attention to the coherence between them and their environment, in order to answer to the quest of global competitiveness. Furthermore, management scholars have for long recognized scientific and technological advances stemming from so-called entrepreneurial universities as the main drivers of national social and economic development (Carayannis et al., 2015). Then the questions the special issue aims to address relate to important benefits, which could arise from bringing innovation further into the mainstream of management thinking and practice, concerning technology, entrepreneurship, organizational behavior (Lombardi et al., 2014) and business strategy. We wish to discuss the emphasis that, from various subfields of economics, has been established, in order to better understand emerging processes of knowledge transfer from research based institutions and its surrounding context. This perspective suggests that flexibility and openness from empirical variety to theoretical essences are motivated by common interests of improving understanding and the proper functioning of the forces and means behind the organization of science, and informing policy making in matters of funding, allocation, and efficient use of resources. Studies dealing with research based entrepreneurship, thus considering the market power of innovative firms created by entrepreneurial scientists, would be greatly appreciated: how can researchers change the market rules by defeating more traditional competitors with innovative ideas and new technology-driven tools? What is the real market power of entrepreneurial universities? How can higher education best stimulate the creation of firms emanating from young and smart minds in colleges and universities? How are brain circulation and social networking helping young academic entrepreneurs to disseminate their ideas worldwide? How can young researchers conceive, develop and exchange entrepreneurial ideas at the maximum speed and with the highest financial return?
3 Empirical research using qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods is encouraged. Case studies (single indepth cases or comparative cases) that are theoretically and empirically grounded are welcomed. We will also consider conceptual papers that draw on the existing literature and develop innovative contributions that improve our understanding of the topic. Thus, we are looking for a wide variety of papers that contribute to the creation of a solid evidence base concerning innovation management inside family enterprises. Potential contributions may include, but should not be limited to theoretical and empirical papers that consider the following: Knowledge inside science-based organizations Student entrepreneurship Role of social media and ICT based technologies in supporting entrepreneurial universities Cognitive processes and social contexts: creativity vs problem solving approach inside entrepreneurial universities Cultural psychology, mentality theory, knowledge transfer: when public science meets private firms Strategies and knowledge assets: firm structure, industrial contexts and performance inside university-industry relations Knowledge-production processes: organizational mechanisms in science-based view Invention in emerging fields: the effects of technological space and geographic origin Regional economics, knowledge externalities and science Technological change and property rights: core assumptions and paradigm dynamics Science, higher education and mechanism design of research organizations SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Please kindly read the author guidelines on the journal homepage before submitting your manuscript, to ensure it is consistent with the journal style ( In addition, all submitted papers should be forwarded using the both to the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Elias G. Carayannis (caraye@gwu.edu) and to the Corresponding Guest Editor, Prof. Manlio Del Giudice (m.delgiudice@unilink.it). All papers should follow the publisher's submission policies for style and format. Papers will undergo at least a double blind, developmental review. Final acceptance of approved papers will be contingent on incorporating reviewers feedback to the satisfaction of the Guest Editors. For all additional information, contact both Prof. Elias G. Carayannis, at caraye@gwu.edu, and Prof. Manlio Del Giudice, at m.delgiudice@unilink.it.
4 Note: This special issue is closely linked to the "8 th Annual Euromed Academy of Business Conference (to be held in Verona, September 16-18, 2015), which is organized in collaboration with the special issue editors. However, note that only participant authors who thoroughly reviewed relevant published KM literature when preparing their papers will be considered for an invitation to submit an extended version of their manuscript for the proposed JKEC Special Issue. The participation to the conference itself or the acceptance of a paper for presentation do not give the authors any right to be selected for the JKEC Special Issue if their papers have not been closely and carefully written for the JKEC readership and KM research community. Then, please, read carefully the JKEC guidelines before preparing your paper.
