1 (Advertisement) MESSAGE of the ad. Analyze the details that prove your identification of the goal and message is 3. Identify the rhetorical devices that build the rhetorical appeals

2 K. Davis (Advertisement) Analysis This advertisement is aimed at housewives with working husbands, which can be deduced through the frequent references to wives and husbands in the text. Specifically, it discusses how the toothpaste isn t a guarantee that husbands will be faithful, but if you use Chlorodent, your good-bye kiss works for, not against you. This shows that the ad is addressing the women in the relationship. The goal of this advertisement is to sell Chlorodent toothpaste. This is accomplished through the message behind the ad, which is that women with unattractive breath will lose the attention of their husbands. It says that Chlorodent makes breath attractive, describing it as wonderful, clean, and fresh. Without the toothpaste, it calls breath stale and furry, diction which makes it sound disgusting. However, the image of the attractive woman at the top of the page, weaving a spider web, is not meant to represent the wives. Instead, it represents the attractive women the husband meets during the day, which the ad claims don t have disgusting morning breath. The primary appeal in this advertisement is pathos. The imagery of the attractive woman is meant to provoke fear in housewives viewing the ad. She is not dressed for work, but is glamorous, and appears dangerous as she weaves her spider web. Webs are meant to trap victims in, implying that she will use her charms to trap the husbands of housewives. By using specific diction to describe the breath of people using Chlorodent as attractive, versus the people who don t use it as ugly and unappealing, the advertisement makes housewives afraid to skip using their toothpaste. Otherwise, they might lose their husbands. MESSAGE of the ad. Analyze the details that prove your identification of the goal and message is 3. 4 K. Davis (Propaganda) MESSAGE. Analyze the goal and message is 3. Identify the propaganda techniques that build the rhetorical appeals

5 K. Davis (Propaganda) Analysis This propaganda is aimed at adults with any spare money. Specifically, it seeks to get money for war bonds to fund the military and war effort in WWI or WWII. References to Weapons for Liberty makes it clear that the money gained will be used for war. Because war bonds were funded by ordinary people, we can assume this ad is directed to anyone with money to give. The goal of this propaganda is to convince people to buy war bonds. This is accomplished through the message behind it, which is that that purchasing war bonds provides weapons for America. The imagery of the standing figure, dressed in the American flag, is meant to represent the country. She bears a shield with the seal of the United States, and the Boy Scout is handing her a sword, labeled Be Prepared, which is also the Boy Scout motto. This implies that anyone who buys war bonds from Boy Scouts is also living by that motto, and helping their country to do so, too. The primary appeal in this propaganda is pathos. The imagery of the woman draped in the American flag is meant to inspire patriotism in the This is an example of the propaganda technique of flag-waving, which justifies an idea by pointing out it benefits the nation. The use of the word liberty to describe weapons is a use of the virtue words technique, making the idea of gathering weapons seem more positive because it appeals to the audience s values. Further, is propaganda is an example of dictat. It offers only one option for the audience to act upon, as if any other choice were not possible. MESSAGE. Analyze the goal and message is 3.
